Tuesday, July 31, 1956 24 THE INDIANAPOLIS NEWS YOUTH BURNS TO DEATH IN WRECKAGE A flaming truck crash and a three-car smashup claimed four lives overnight. JAMES FRANKLIN THOMAS, 17, Black Diamond, was pinned in the truck wreckage at New Albany and burned to death. The accident occurred at 3:25 a.m. when a semitruck, heavily laden with steel, swerved, toppled onto two parked cars and burst into flame. A gasoline tank exploded.

Mack Lloyd 32, Bessemer, driver of the truck and a cousin of Thomas, said he was blinded by the lights of oncoming traffic. He was uninjured. Three persons were injured fatally in a crash miles south of Mishawaka on Ind. 331. LAWRENCE MAX WELL GUY, 20, R.R.

4, Warsaw, was killed instantly. PHILLIP J. LONGENECKER, 20 R.R. 2, Leesburg, a passenger in Guy's car, died 3 hours following the crash. A second driver, EARL MILTON STEWARD, 55, a dishwasher at the Beatty Memorial Hospital, Westville, and former resident of Mishawaka, died about a half hour after the accident.

At Michigan City, 80-yearold JOHN T. CURL, who was injured last Thursday when his car crashed into a pole at a gas station, died last night. Curl's 76 year old wife, Maude, and their daughter-inlaw, Clara Day, 56, were injured seriously. Believe HST Lost Move to Dump Adlai By RUTH MONTGOMERY INS Reporter WASHINGTON Former President Harry S. Truman, playing a cagey game of political poker, has met with initial rebuff in his secret attempt to scuttle Adlai Stevenson in favor of a Harriman-Kefauver ticket.

This correspondent has learned from an unimpeachable source that Truman has been working behind the scenes for several weeks to man Senator Estes KeYork R050 Governor Averell Harriforce wedding between New fauver Tennessee. At one point the 0: proposed deal looked so hot that plan56 ners expected to culminate it at the testimonial dinner for Senator Walter George in DE Washington 10 days ago. The plan blew up that evening, however, and does not now 0 look very promising. An informed source revealed that Truman, nearly a month ago, dispatched his handpicked former national chairman, Frank McKinney of Indianapolis to New York for the first of a series of secret huddles with Harriman's campaign manager, Carmine DeSapio. McKinney, recently appointed Midwest campaign manager for Harriman, was delegated to persuade Harriman to take Kefauver as his running mate, and also to convince the Senator that his only hope lay in such a deal.

Although the ex-president dislikes Kefauver, he has been eyeing his 200 committed delegates and possible 50 others as the best means of stopping a bandwagon for Stevenson after the first ballot. Warren Spangle, executive secretary of the canners' group, 850 said of the state's crop has been damaged by "careless of chemicals by 05 some highway county departments, rural electric membership corporaItions, private utilities and Salzarulo neighboring farmers.

Damage so far is estimated at 3,900 acres, but Spangle said it may run as high as 5,000 acres. Injury to the crop ranges from slight to a complete kill, and in a preliminary survey the average loss was estimated at 1 to 2 tons an acre. The damage, he said, results from drifting chemicals used to clear weeds from roadsides, fence rows and farm crops in neighboring fields. Crop and chemical authorities explain that of three types of weed chemicals on the market, the ester forms are more volatile and form a gas or vapor which can drift up to a mile hours after the chemical has been applied. To combat drifting, they recommended use of low volatile chemicals, low pressure spraying, and nozzles with large openings to avoid a misty spray which might drift.

Dr. G. F. Warren of the Purdue horticulture department, recommended that weed chemical users. in addition to using low volatile esters, avoid HIGHEST OF PRAISES Flying New Air Indianapolis' new streamlined air terminal at Weir Cook Municipal Airport received the highest of praises of flying farmers from four states yesterday.

Nearly 500 gathered here yesterday from Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana, the host state, for the 11th annual Flying Farmers' field day. Bulk of the visitors came in their own planes, but some came by automobile, explaining that their planes were under repair. Here are comments by visitors: Frank Langellier, Milford, "Pretty nice a big improvement since I was here 15 years ago." Kenneth Wycoff, Valparaiso: "This terminal is a big asset to Indianapolis. It is well-planned, handy and adequate for a while, at least." John Rose, Wawaka: "As nice a place I've ever seen." Newell Maggart, Lapel: "Pretty nice looking place. It's Man Sought in Stockyard Slaying Held The 23-year-old man wanted for the slaying of a 41-year-old truck driver at the Indianapolis Stockyards has surrendered to police.

Kenneth J. Baughman, Seattle, who has been on the run since the June 30 slaying during an attempted holdup of a poker game, arrived at police headquarters yesterday afternoon with a lawyer. He told police he had returned to Indianapolis last Thursday after making two trips to Ohio, one to Missouri 5 and one to Illinois. Baughman is charged with the murder of William Waller, 41, 1548 Shepard, the father of seven children. Waller was struck in the chest with a shotgun blast when he attempted to break up the holdup of the all poker game in a small building in the center of the stockyards.

She said: "I did get some pleasure from the experience. I saw so many birds. One of them, a bluebird, I hadn't seen in ever so long." President FRED HEINKEL of the Missouri Farmers Association: "A farm law which will meet the needs of farmers must recognize the fact that we must learn to live with an abundance in agriculture." 3 Witnesses Change Tune; Ex-Cop Freed Former Policeman Jacque Durham was freed of a pandering charge today by a judge's directed charge of not guilty. Judge Pro Tem Frank A. Symmes sustained a motion for a directed verdict by the jury after three principal state's witnesses reneged on sworn statements.

Prosecutor John G. Tinder said, after the case in Criminal Court 1, he would ask that suspension of six-month sentences given two of the witnesses in return for their testimony be lifted. The witnesses, Larry and of pornographic literature. 008 in Robert Daniels, brothers, had been found guilty of possession connection with the case. Doris Rowland, 25, 548 N.

Senate, identified as the prostitute in the case, said she knew Durham only slightly. A sworn statement, dated June 13, 1955, was introduced, in which she said she had known Durham three years and that he had taken her to 2502 N. Delaware, a filling station. There, according to the statement, she had relations with two brothers for $5 apiece on May 13, 1955. Miss Rowland testified today she was under narcotic addiction at the time and that she had been imposed upon to sign.

She denied the contents of the statement. The two brothers involved refused to link Durham with bringing Miss Rowland to the filling station. Deaths Bamberger, Mary, 81, 5330 N. Penn. carcinoma Barrett, Bessie, 68, Methodist, cancer Davidson, Lawrence 8., 56, Long.
