There are all sorts of holes in the rating dodge.

ARB national ratings are based on 2,200 diary studies in 1,000 points in the United States. Twelve jer cent of these are in New York. Other places vary. Utica, N.Y., may be on the list one week; Rosebud, the next. The whole diary system is up to question.

For one thing, it places enormous reliance not only on the memory but on the integrity of all the diarists. Diaries are supposed to be placed in selected homes but my informant knows of the home of a guy that owned a radio station and promptly filled it out with the names of his own programs. In another case, although typical listeners are supposed to be the rule, a 9-year-old boy was given the diary to fill out (and, as my informant pointed out, 9-year-old boys are not typical of anything except 9-year-old boys and not always of those.) Nielsen uses 1,200 audime-ters for the whole country and points out proudly that this is one for every 35,000 TV homes. They are supposed to be strategically placed in clusters of counties but one audi-meter could easily suffice for 25 counties in Texas. And, if that one audimeter happened to be tuned to Ed Sullivan as opposed to Steve Allen, that would throw thinking about Texas way out of kilter.

And just suppose that one audimeter were not tuned to either Brothers to Get New Lease on Life The Brothers will be taken out of moth balls and given new life this summer.
