Pete Goegan's goal with 1:27 left gave Detroit its uphill victory over the hapless Rangers, who entered the final period with a 3-1 lead. The Wings bunched their three goals in a 6-minute span with Alex Del-vecchio and Parker MacDonald also finding the range. Sub goalie Hank Bassen of Detroit has yet to taste defeat.

In his four starts in the nets, the Wings have won three and tied one. Gump Worsley, recovered from a wrenched back muscle, was back in the Rangers' cage after missing two games. It was the Giants' 10th victory against three losses and one tie in their 16-game goodwill tour that will end Sunday.

The Giants walloped the All-Stars, 11-5, at Shimonoseki in the 13th game of the tour. New manager Alvin Dark hired two former Giant teammates, Larry Jansen and Whitey Lockman, as coaches to help him run the club next season. Coaches Frank (Salty) Parker and Wes Westrum were retained. Jansen replaces Bill Posedel as pitching coach. Jimmy Reese, who has coached for San Diego's Pacific Coast League club for the last 13 years, signed a two-year contract as manager of the Padres.

Spartans Seek 6th Straight Harrier Title By Associated Pros CHICAGO Michigan State will seek its sixth straight big 10 cross-country championship over the 4-mile Washington Park course tomorrow.

The Spartan Harriers then will invade New York to try for a fifth consecutive IC4-A crown Monday on the 5-mile Van Cortland Park course. Top contender for individual honors in both races is Billy Reynolds, senior captain from Gait, Ontario. Two other Spartan threats are juniors Gerald Young of Berkley, and Clayton Ward of Long Beach, Cal. Graduated Forddy Kennedy of MSU won the big 10 title last year. Only one team, Indiana, has won more than five big 10 meets in a row.

Indiana was Madison High School will dedicate its new basketball hall tomorrow night, but it doesn't immediately expect to enjoy itself quite as much as it did in old Brown Memorial gym the last couple of seasons. The Cubs ran up a string of 25 straight victories last season before they lost, 72-64, to Central of Muncie in the Indianapolis semistate tourney championship game. They lost only to New Albany in the 1958-59 regular season and also went to the semistate before losing an 82-80 sizzler to Crispus Attucks. Madison figures to win its dedicatory gom from Vevoy, beaten last week by Milan, but eooch Bud Ritter lost too many starters to Ziove the early-season power ho generally controls. The big loss, of course, was 6.4 Buster Briley, who customarily scored between 25 and 45 points and now is at Evans-ville College.

Ritter also lost the rest of his height, except 6.4 Larry Humes, a fine re-bounder and still only a junior. Larry Cheatham, 6.1, up from the reserve team, probably will be Madison's only other starter over 5.11. For the first time in years the only undefeated and untied high school football teams still up in Indiana are the two considered by all the experts as the best in Hoosierdom. But whether Reitz of Evans-ville or Hammond is best may never be answered. They won't meet.

In their final games of the campaign tonight, Herm Byers Reitz Panthers will shoot for their ninth straight triumph against city-rival Bosse. They already have the Division championship of the Southern Conference tucked away. Hammond, champion of the West NIHSC, will shoot for it all tonight at home in its 10th game against Michigan City, the East NIHSC winner, which won the trip after a coin flip with cochampion Washington of South Bend. La port also tied for the East title, but did it with its 10th and last game the absolute limit for football competition under the IHSAA banner. There is not much question that this is Byers' best collection at Reitz in a long career that covers several outstanding ball clubs.

The Panthers have been rated the No. 1 team in Indiana on both AP and UPI polls for most of the campaign. In addition, Reitz has one of the best defensive records ever established. In eight games it has given up only one touchdown, and that occurred in a 34-6 triumph over Central of Muncie. Huntington's Vikings also permitted only one touchdown, but it got caught In a 7-7 tie with Peru that cost it not only a perfect defensive record but knocked it out of the Central Conference Crown, now Peru property.
