The yellow caution and green lights which direct traffic on the track are controlled through a telephone circuit. Observers on the outside of the track are linked by a special phone circuit to race officials at the starting line. The work of installing the network of phones is under the supervision of William J.

Two rookies were suspended for two days each after their cars were involved in ac cidents during practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month.

Two other rookies who sought qualification as 500" drivers were told to get more experience and come back. The 45-year-old former driver was named to his year post after USAC direc tors fired the former director of competition, Duane Carter. USAC is a governing body which represents all groups interested in racing, from driv OGDEL-DELLEN SETS BRAND-NEW '59 BUICK HARDTOP 11 14 i 'in, It Still Runs 1 ers and car owners to race promoters and racing fans. It sanctions races on tracks over the country for Indianapolis-type racers, as well as sprint, stock car and sports car races. It's principal rival is the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).

Banks was bom in England but came to this country as a boy when his parents moved to Royal Oaks, Mich. He drove his first race 26 years ago in Michigan and was an active driver through the 1953 season. Banks drove in six 500-Mile Races, his best finish being sixth in 1951. For 13 years he drove cars owned by Lind- sey Hopkins, Miami (Fla.) businessman. After his retirement from racing he became western area zone supervisor for the Ford Motor Co.Js aircraft division.

THE PACE COMPLETE DELIVERED PRICE Test runs with a new tuneless tire for 500-mile racing are planned for the Speedway track this summer, Firestone officials said today. planned tests were announced by M. P. Hershey, Firestone's tire development head, and W. R.

McCrary, field manager of Firestone's racing division located in Indianapolis. Tubeless tires for racing at Indianapolis have not been used so far because engineers have not been able to prevent air from escaping through the porous light weight metals used in modern racing wheels. "The problem is to find some way of sealing the metal so that it will stay sealed at the high temperatures racing develops," Hershey said. His friends point out that his initials M.P.H., are significant in view of his interest in and work for tires that permit higher and higher mph's. The metal in a passenger car offers no such problem, hence tubeless tires have passed easily from the laboratory to the commercial stage.

I Tubeless tires would be an advantage in racing because they do not have as much heat build-up as does a tire with art innertube. Firestone this year is marking its 50th anniversary of catering to the racing trade. The No. 10," which won the Speedway's first feature race on August 19, 1909, traveled the 250-mile route on Firestone tires. Harvey 3.

Firestone was convinced that the 2Vj-mile oval made an ideal test laboratory and out of this conviction grew the firm's race tire development program. 30 TYPES OF TIRES The company now has 30 different types of racing tires. Included are tires suitable for high speed racing at Indianapolis, Monza and Daytona, as well as on midgets, sprint cars and dirt track racers. Racing tires and passenger tires are similarly constructed except that race cars need tires with special tread designs to increase their stability. "A race car can't roll on its tires, as a passenger car does when it corners, hence stability is more critical," Hershey explained.

Racing tires usually are of six-ply construction and are designed for 50 pounds pressure. Passenger car tires are four-ply, with" 24 pounds pressure. Monza tires, because of extremely heavy loading resulting from the banked course, are eight-ply, with 60 pounds pressure. 4 5, cnnn4 EQUIPPED! Di8 OO' Lineup Back on the Straightaway The lineup to start the 500-Mile Race this year will return to the former method of arranging the cars in 11 rows of three each or the main straightaway. The change follows two years of accident plagued starts.

Last year's first-lap, 16-car pileup followed a confused start in which the three front line cars started the parade lap in front of the pace car. Pat O'Connor was killed in the ensuing crush of cars on the northeast turn. In 1957, cars driven by Elmer George and Eddie Russo collided on the parade lap and both cars were out of the race. For the past two years the parade lap has started with the cars lined up in the pit area. The change this year is to move the cars out onto the straightaway in the starting formation which prevailed before 1957.

This year, too, the pace car will have voice radio communication with track officials so that better coordination for the start can be exercised. Chief Steward Harlan Fengler said the cars will be lined up at the starting line near the Tower Terrace. The pace car, driven by Sam Hanks and with Tony Hul-man, Speedway president, as observer-passenger, will lead the cars on a parade lap around the track and then, at a slightly faster pace, on the pace lap. At the end of the pace lap, the pace car will turn off into the north opening to the pit apron as the 33 cars charge for a flying start at 11 a.m. The prerace ceremonies will be on the same time schedule that has prevailed in previous years: 3 a -Gates pn.
