The French Africans aren't as primitive as you might think. There is a native violinist who plays a native violin with a technical dexterity that, is astonishing, that, indeed, would put to shame some of the violinists we hear regularly. The tone By WALTER WHITWOKTII The revival of folk music, partly, at least, undrr the urging of anthropologists, is leading critics as well as listeners inlo strange fields. All of us are hearing melodies and rhythms that at first seem not only esoteric but also incomprehensible, The gratifying surprise is that, after a hit, they no longer seem puzzling.

Columbia sent us two of Its folk music albums, one with na QQC LEAN 100 PURE Ground BEEF quality, to he sure, is devastating shrill, but. what of it? And there is one melody that is dis-ronrertingly like our own blues," The rest is cruder from an Occidental point of view, but there are power and meaning and sincerity there, just the same. As for the Scotch songs, you will not lind "Blue Hells of Scotland" or "f'omin' Through the Rye'' In these old folk tunes. You will find, instead, a good deal of humor, a good deal of spontaneity and some of the loveliest songs ever heard, all sung, not. by professional artists, but by the people.

The two records are a find" to those of us who are always seeking music that is refreshing and honest, and fully meant. It shows up in "ALL DAY LONG," quite different from his famous band of old. A novelty, "TYROLEAN TANGO," is on the reverse of the Capitol waxing. Just one lucky record and the public will take a new singer to its heart.

Annisteen Allen has the winning combination in "WHEELS OF LOVE" and "FUJIYAMA MAMA" 'Capitol I. Another double-ringer for a new vocalist is Bob Stewart's melodic duo for MGM. In both FOR THE ASKING" and "A MILLION STARS," he has been given a fine concert hall background by Joe Lipman and his orchestra. If you are a Kenton fan, you will applaud his latest brain child. From Capitol Records comes a new series, called KENTON PRESENTS JAZZ. Each album in the series of six spotlights a Kenton disciple, who in turn is backed up by three other musicians whose style complements the lead man. The Sal Salvador collection should have the most general appeal, partly because of the popularity of the guitar, and because most of the selections are recognizable melodies. Included are "DOWN HOME," "VIOLETS FOR YOUR FURS," and "A IN NEW BBSS (U. t. Oovt. Inpetd Horn Mt) as its principal ingredient ib.

The album, in truth, is an engineer's delight, for this experimenting turns sounds into extraordinary sounds by raising or lowering the customary pitch of everything.

You did the same thing with your old 78s, because the old phonographs had a speed regulator. You do the same thing more easily, and more hilariously, with your new three-speed phonographs. Only, of course, not as scientifically as Fassett and his engineers do it. Since we never expect to review a recital by a canary singing bass, we decided this was one record we could leave alone more easily than we can lake. Il's fun, though.
