Hughes, long-time Republican Party worker and present superintendent of collections for the Indianapolis District, died early toSanitarst. Vincent's Hospital. Born in Wilkes -Barre, Mr. Hughes had lived in Indianapolis since 1928.

He was 54. He and his wife, Cecyle Lillian Hughes, and a son Edward, a student at Butler University, made their home at 3906 N. Temple. A daughter, Mrs. Milton McIntyre, Columbus, and a brother, Edward J.

Hughes, Indianapolis, survive. Mr. Hughes had been ill for about a month and underwent two abdominal operations- -the last about a week ago. was with the Crowell Pub(lishing as a circulation superfor 18 years. He was chief motor inspector for the Public Service Commission and later worked for the Bureau 1 of Motor Vehicles.

He was a member of the Millersville Masonic Lodge and the First Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death he was Republican 23d Ward chairman in Center Township. Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Flanner Buchanan Mortuary with burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. Berton Stout, Electric Utility Official, Dead Berton Stout, 64, assistant treasurer at the Indianapolis Power and a Light died today in Methodist Hospital.

He had been in failing health since August, 1951. R. G. Botkin, I.U. Dental Teacher, Dies Dr.

Robert G. Botkin, wellknown Indianapolis dentist, died last night Methodist Hospital. He was 49 years old. Last December Dr. Botkin had his offices in the given up Hume-Mansur Building to become assistant professor in the crown and bridge department, in charge of clinical teaching at the Indiana University School of Dentistry.

Previously he had taught part time at the school for three years. Born at Carlos, near Winchester, February 10, 1903, Dr. Botkin came to Indianapolis in 1922, graduating the I. U. school four years later.

He had practiced dentistry in Indianapolis since that time, except for years as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II. For a time he was dentist in charge of the Japanese prisoner of war camp on Gaum and served elsewhere in the Pacific theater two years. Dr. Botkin, who lived at 72 Layman, was a member of the Irvington Methodist Church, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, Irvington Masonic Lodge, Paul Cable Post, American Legion, Indianapolis Dental Society and the Naval Reserve. He held honorary membership in the Federation Dentaire Internationale, a French organization.

Funeral services will be held in Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel Friday at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Henry G. White, pastor of Irvington Methodist Church, in charge, Interment will be in the mausoleum at Washington Park Cemetery, Besides the widow, Mrs. Frances A.

Botkin, he is survived by a brother, Dr. Gilbert E. Botkin, Marion, and four sisters, Mrs. Blanche Gaddis, Carlos; Mrs. G.

C. Richardson, treasurer, April 8, 1929. He was elected an officer April 6, 1937. He began his career in 1909 as a bookkeeper for the old Central Union Telephone Co. here, and in four years rose to assistant superintendent of bookkeepers.

From 1913 to 1917 he was field examiner on the State Board of Accounts. In 1917 he was appointed accountant in the cost accounting section of United States Army Ordnance in Indianapolis, Hoboken, N.J., and Cincinnati fices. Mr. Stout came back to Indianapolis in February, 1920, as a certified public accountant for the old firm of Coffield, Herdrick and stayed through its. reorganizing until December, 1923, when he joined a California real estate firm as accountant and salesman.

He returned to Indianapolis in November, 1927. Born near Lebanon, October 11, 1887, he was, educated in Boone County, attended Wabash College and Lain Business College. He was a member of the Indiana Association of CPA's, director of the Cooperative Club of Indianapolis, Calvin W. Prather Lodge, F. A.

Scottish Rite, taxation committee of Edison Electric Institute, Thorntown Christian Church and Rivierservices will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Flanner Buchanan Mortuary, with burial following in Washington Park Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Margaret E. Stout, and three daughters, Mrs.

Patricia Dresbach and Miss Barbara Jean Stout, both of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Joan Cooper, Spring Lake. Long- Time Indiana Ave. Gambler Dies One of Indiana Avenue's most colorful characters was missing today. He was Archie (Joker) Young, who died last night at his home, 625 Bright.

A life resident of Indianapolis, Young was a quiet-looking, calm man with a bushy gray mustache. Only his clothes were flashy. The 72-year-old man was bestknown for his frequent tangles with the usually on a charge of gambling or running a gambling joint. But in his 34 arrests since 1912 he was jailed 'once and paid just four fines. Young never denied gambling.

But he once told police whom he foiled with an elaborate warning system, "You'll have to be faster than the buzzer to catch me." A vice squad once raided Young's Golden West Athletic -only to find 15 or 20 men playing Chinese checkers. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Cora Young: a daughter, Miss Maxine Young, Flint, two sons, Archie New York City, and Norman, Chicago, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Hortense Grooms, Detroit.
