The Dixiana colts en Berteem, a son of the imported Bernborough and Little Priss, by Sweep All; and Spy Defense, a son of Bull Lea and Mata Hari, by Peter Hastings. Both colts had creditable race records as 2-year-olds.

Bernborough, sire of Berscem, was a good stakes winner in Australia and has had considerable success in this country as a sire. His sons in America include Bcrnwood, which set a new track record at Churchill Downs for 6 furlongs and was third in the Derby Trial and also in the Kentucky Jockey Club tugging tactics in the first half of the bout but cheered the majority decision. Smith, who weighed 128 to his foe's 130 4, showed the reason for Corky's respect in the ninth round. He staggered Gonzales with a right to the jaw and later in the round shook him with a right to the temple. But Gonzales came back fighting, held the edge at the bell and went on to win the 10th round.

He won four of the last five rounds on the officials' cards with his comeback.
