RobinMoor Landed At Capetown New Offensive To Take Libya rom The Axis DEVELOPMENTS ON OTHER WAR RONTS Quiet for weeks the North Afri can battle front flamed into action anew today as British troops punched across the frontier into Libya and attacked axis forces in the Cambut sector west of Bardia 10 miles from the Egyptian border In London it was indicated General Sir Archibald Wavell comntender in chief of the British army of the Nile may have launched a new of fensive to take Libya from the axis The German high command said 60 British tanks were destroyed and that a British attack in the Salum area on the Egyptian Libyan frontier col lapsed under combined resistance of axis troops and warplanes The British said their forces de stroyed T2 axis vehicles in the Gam but sector Other details were lacking The Italian high command also de scribed the battle as raging in the Salum front and said the British striking after several days of patrol activity had been repulsed every where According to the police records Jesse Lambert of west Statesville driving a coach was going north on 10th street and Paul Ladd of Drake street driving an Irdell Ice and uel Company pick up truck was going east on Conner street when the vehicles collided car being overturned No one was serious ly hurt The police had no file of the estimated property damage No charges were preferred against either driver Mrs Rhoda Baity Claimed By Death Mrs Rhoda Baity 92 years old mother of Mr John Baity of New Hope community died Thursday night at her home near un eral services were held Saturday fit Hunting increase for any ten years over the preceding ten years was in 1890 with an increase of 1188 per cent The ten years preced ing 1870 was next ivith 1134 per cent increase The census just taken shows the smallest 91 per cent The average for the decades be tween 1850 1940 has been 591 in crease ive townships in the county show decrease in population They are Con cord allstown Olin Shiloh and Turnersburg The combined decrease was only 386 or the ten years from 1920 to 1930 these five townships showed an increase of 1655 over the preceding ten years Of the other townships all of which show increases in population Coddle Creek has the biggest 1714 Statesville Steam Laundry Is Sold At Public Auction The Statesville Steam laundry was sold at public auction today at noon The high bid $8500 subject io pat due and present taxes amounting to around $5000 was made by Mr Huffman of Monroe The sale was left open for 20 days for a raise TEN AXIS PLANES SHOT DOWN OVER MALTA Valletta Malta June Ten axis wai planes were reported shot down into the sea around this British Medi terranean island base yesterday by Royal Air orce fighter pilots lashing back with unusual success at axis raiders which have killed 295 and se riously injured 310 civilians in the last 12 months of incessant bombing The axis planes had again blasted the city where 2341 houses have been demolished in a year during in property damage aggregat ing around $200 but no serious person al injury Marvin Dewey reeze of Hill street was driving a coach headed south on Shelton avenue and Hackett Janies Bober of Statesville Route 3 driving a coach was going north on Shelton avenue when the crash occurred reeze was in the act of passing another car and Debar had just passed a car when coach crashed into a concrete column of the vnderpass then hit the reeze auto mobile The police department after mak ing investigation did not file any charges against either driver The damage to each car was estimated at approximately DOWNS OUR NAZIPLANES La Limea Spain June rench trans ocean airmen 'landed their bomber at Gibraltar and surrendered to the British tody nd th crew of a second bomber was rescued yesterday after their craft ran into anti aircraft fire and crashed into the strait of Gibraltar The British said one of two other bombers which flew over Gibraltar and units of the fleet there Sunday crashed into the water and that three crew men were rescued The announcement failed to identify these but informants supposed they also were rench In London the air ministry announc ed today an American made Cata lina School Mrs Cline Taken By Death Mrs Wf Cline died at her home 1000 Caldwell street Thursday after noon at 3:50 Mrs Cline had been in failing health the past year and critically ill for three weeks prior to her death A native of Alexander county Mrs Cline was Miss Dollie Mae Reid be fore her marriage She was born Sep tember 12 1904 the daughter of Lee and Victoria Reid Surviving are her husband School Libraries Open 2 Days A Week The libraries at Avery Sherrill school and at Mulberry Street school will be open throughout the summer for two days each week beginning with Tuesday June 17th The Three Bail Storms High Wind And Rain Cause Much Damage Monticello "Center Over 100 Window Panes Broken Out At School ROO IS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR Reports from the hail storm area across Iredell county Saturday after noon continue to come in this morn ing revealing that the damage to crops and property was far in excess of the first estimates Saturday There were three hail storms the first about 12:30 being the most disastrous the second around 1:30 and the last around 3 Saturday afternoon The storms cover ed a strip from half a mile to two miles in width from Cross Roads in Shiloh township across north of Statesville through Beaver community east and into Davie coun ty The worst part of the storm was in the vicinity of the Monticello school where roofs of houses were ruined windows shattered trees uprooted leaves and fruit stripped off trees and crops beaten into the earth Mr Summers county school maintenance man reported that the composition roof on the Monticello school building will have to be re placed He said the huge hail stones broke holes in the roof having the ap pearance of being hit with a sledge hammer More than 100 windows in the building were shattered Mr Sum mers estimating that it will cost at least $300 to $350 to repair the dam age to the school building Mr Gus Deaton of the Monticello community told of chickens being kill ed in the vicinity of the Monticello school cattle that were out in the storm had great knots on their backs (Continued On Page Three) ROBERT WILLIAMS HERE DR SUMMER To Direct Young Peoples Work At The irst Presbyterian Mr Robert Williams of Greens boro is to have charge of young peo work at the irst Presbyterian church this summer Mr Williams who was graduated from Davidson College with the class of 1941 will enter Union Theological Seminary in Richmond next year for training for the ministry He is the son of Rev Murphy Williams pas tor of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant Greensboro Mr Williams came to Statesville the latter part of the week and be gan his duties at the church Sunday lie will work with the Junior Choir and other young groups He is spending today in Davidson at the Presbyterian Young Con ference but will return here tonight Mr Williams is with Mr Ross Mc Elwee Jr a fellow member of the graduating class at Davidson for a few days until he is permanently lo cated MASONS TO MEET The regular meeting of Order No 27 A and A will be held in the Masonic Hall Tuesday evening at 8 No Charges iled In The Wreck Involving our Automobiles The police department after inves tigating the four car wreck at the intersection of Shelton avenue and McElwee street Saturday afternoon found no cause for filing charges against any of the four drivers The owners of the vehicles agreed to ad just the matter of payment of proper ty damages The drivers involved were Summers Stanley Redmond William Rimmer and Martin Orders All The German Consulates In This Country Closed Washington June 16 The United States today ordered clos ing of all German consulates in this country and removal of all German nationals connected with those agencies Sumner Welles under secretary of state made the announcement after handing a note to an official of the German embassy The order requires the closing also of the German library of in formation and railway tourist bureau and German trans ocean news agency before July 10 Welles asserted that this did not imply a break in diplomatic relations with Germany and in no way affected German diplomatic staffs in Washington BUTTER AND EGG RACKET CASE TRIED Two Colored Men Get Off With ine And Costs In Court today Judge Winberry heard the case of Luth er Curry arid John Davidson both colored charged with the operation of a butter and egg racket Lottery tick ets were exhibited which had been found on their persons at the time of their arrests On April 1st they were found to have $3502 derived from this source and on June 12 they had $3240 It was pointed out that Curry had been convicted on the same charge in 1936 Judge Winberry found them guiltyr as they 'had plead and sen tenced them to four months on the road suspended upon the condition that they not violate any state lottery laws for two years Each is to pay a fine of $25 and the costs are to be paid together One half of the money taken from the men in April and in June is to go to the officers who made the arrests and the other half is to go to the county department It was ordered that the tickets and other material found in their posses sion be destroyed elix Bustle colored was charged with possessing liquor for sale Pray er for judgment was continued for two years on condition that he pay a fine of $25 and not violate any state laws during the period Leonard Owens white charged with assault on his wife was found to be failing to support her A previous sentence of two years on the roads was put into effect John Wright a young white man from the Mooresville community was found not guilty in a charge of aban donment and non support but was found guilty of assault on a female Prayer for judgment was continued for two years provided that the de fendant shall not assault or molest his wife in any way He was ordered to pay the witness fees The Universal Credit Company ap peared to show that it is the owner and holder of a valid title to the au tomobile formerly in the possession of Ben Lyons The court ordered the car to be released to the credit com pany on condition that it pay tne court costs and the storage charges GREEK RELIE UNDS SAVED ROM GERMANS New Orleans June 13 A quarter million dollars of the fund sent to Greece by a Greek War Relief society in America was returned with thanks because nazi Germany was then in posession of Greece Archbishop Athenagoras of the Greek Orthodox church of America said here today society collected $6000000 and sent $4000000 to said the archbishop who headed the drive the last $250000 came back We have now more than $2000000 and the drive is He said this money would be used to bring Greek orphans to the United States to be educated with permission of the United tSates government to aid Greek refugees in Egypt and else where and send to Greece clothing for children under Red Cross care TWO MEN ARE ARRESTED OR STEALING GASOLINE About 11:30 Sunday night city po lice officers apprehended Henry Shoemaker arid Jack Harris in Alli woods near Turnersburg These meen charged with entering a gas tank in Eagle Mills township on June 11 which belonged to Blaine Cart wright and taking between 30 and 40 gallons of gasoline They are alleged to have put the gasoline in a drum and to have hidden it in the woods near Turnersburg or some time deputy sheriff Hayes had been watch ing the drum While he was away for a few minutes three men approached the hiding place and filled the pas tank of their automobile As they were preparing to leave the city officials there arrested the three The other man was Charles clubs are expected to attend' Ernest Martin Dies At Leaksville Mr Ernest Martin father of Dr Ernest Martin of Statesville died at the Leaksville hospital riday after a short illness of a heart ail ment Dr and Mrs Martin were call ed to Leaksville Thursday night Mr Martin 63 years old was en gaged in the furniture business in Draper He was a native of LeaksviMo member of a prominent Leaksville family and is survived by his widow one daughter Mrs Chandler of Leaksville two sons Mr Charles Martin of Leaksville ond Dr Ernest Martin of Statesville Ono brother and two sisters also survive uneral services were held Saturday at 2 at the home In Leaksville and interment was in the family plot in Leaksville cemetery ENTERS Mr Walter Gaither is In he Long hospital for treatmnt Mr Gaither has been in had health for some time.
