SLAGG HAG CHANGED SINCE YOU OPRATEDi ON HIS ncAD Mr 7 Turlington Mooresville attorney who will have lived in Ire dell county forty one years come next August talked to Rotary club Tues day about the progress he has seen Iredell make in a little more than four decades Mr Turlington is of the opinion that probably the greatest progress has been made along agricultural lines He recently saw County Agent A II Morrow show pictures of developments in farming in Iredell county and was amazed to see the progress made terracing hay crops dairying etc Mr Turlington is of the opinion that Iredell is destined to be one of the great dairying counties of the State As to some of the needs at present Mr Turlington thinks Ire dell needs and should have more edu cational facilities and that the pro gress of the county demands more educational facilities When Mr Turlington came to Mooresville in August 1900 there were no improved roads in the county and no concrete sidewalks except possibly where some home owner had built a little walk from the house to street But Iredell began to build roads in 1911 after passage of a bill in the legislature authorizing a bow' issue in Iredell for building of soil roads in this county The county com missioner spent that money well build ing topsoil roads in practically every community in the county They were soon followed by hardsurface roads The speaker said in this connection that he believes one mistake the coun ty made was getting the booster idea a few years ago and spending so much for hardsurface roads that the big bonded indebtedness incurred thereby had proved a handicap to Iredell This county is no more favorably situated than Catawba Cabarrus Rowan or orsyth or Mecklenburg but the tax rate is much higher than any of those counties think we ought to use our ingenuity to lower our tax rate in Ire dell as much as we can without inter fering with the said Mr Turlington He also noted the progress made along educational and industrial lines in four decades Statesville had a grad ed school when he came here but Mooresville did not have one until some years later There were little one room schoolhouses all over 'the county he recalls no log school houses 1 though and he thinks? he knew them pretty well for he spoke in practically every one of them There were three months of public schools and the teachersrwere paid $25 to $30 per month These little school houses have be replaced by a fine system of consolidated schools though Mr Turlington believes that probably one disadvantage of the consolidated system is that the schoolhouse is no longer the community center that it was in the davs of the one rooin school As to progress along manufactur ing lines in the two communities Mr Turlington recalled that in 1900 the Statesville Cotton Mill was in exist ence and the Mooresville Cotton mill All the furniture plants have built in the four decades the hosiery 1 mills two additional cotton mills at Statesville the woolen mills and oth ers and plants of both the Statesville and Mooresville mills have been ex panded Mr Turlington is a native of John ston countyHe recalled details of his arrival in Mooresville He had all his belongings in telescope bag When he came through Raleigh Judge Shep herd gave him a big book and he put this book into his bag overcrowding it so much that the strap of telescope broke Turlington still recalls just how he felt watching the hotel porter carry the bag and its contents in his arms Then the new comer decided to he philosophical about it and realizing that he know the
