(AP) Vaughn Dunbar and Trent Green broke Indiana school records, and the Hoosier defense broke the backs of the Baylor Bears in a 24-0 New Year's Eve victory in the Copper BowL Indiana (7-4-1) built a 17-0 halftime lead, then capitalized on two key defensive plays late in the game to shut out Baylor (84) for the first time in 14 bowl appearances. Dunbar scored one touchdown and gained 106 yards on 28 carries for a season total of 1,805, 12 yards more than Anthonj Thompson's total in 1989. Green ran for two scores and passed for 165 yards, pushing his season total to 2,627 and breaking Steve Bradley's 1984 mark of 2,544. Indiana, like other Big Ten schools, includes bowl games in season statistics. Scott Bonnell added a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter.

THE HARD-HITTING Hoosiers stymied Baylor's veer offense, holding the Bears to 269 yards. Free safety Damon Watts came up with Indiana's biggest defensive play with 51 seconds left in the third quarter, recovering Baylor quarterback JJ. Joe's fumble in the Indiana end zone to snuff the Bears' most serious scoring threat Linebacker John Miller inter- third quarter, and a face mask penalty against Indiana gave the Bears another chance at their 46. Joe moved Baylor to the Indiana 5, and an interference penalty on a pass in the end zone provided a first down at the 1 But on the next play, Joe fumbled trying to hand off to his fullback. Dunbar, a 6-foot, 207-pounder, carried 16 times for 82 yards in the first half, his last run for a 5-yard touchdown to put Indiana ahead 17-0 with 12 seconds remaining before halftime.

Green scored the opening tou-chLown on a 1-yard keeper midway through the first quarter. Green broke Bradley's yardage record on an 18-yard second-quarter pass to Scott McGowan during the Hoosiers' second touchdown drive. Dunbar carried sir times for 32 yards on Indiana's first scoring drive, taking the ball inside the Baylor 1, from where Green kept for the touchdown. Bayior drove 59 yards to the IhdV ana 21 on the following series. On a fake field goal, holder and punter Kent Brentham, who had fumbled a punt on the Bears' first series, overthrew his wide-open kicker, Jeff Ireland, inside the Indiana 10.

From The Associated Press Recession? Not in college football. Apparently the only thing that affects a bowl's cash register is the matchup. Miami's Orange 3owl is doing land-office business because the hometown team is ranked No. 1 and going for a national title. And a couple of bov's are doing better business than a year ago despite the recession that has cast a pall over the real world.

Of course, offering midwinter getaways to Florida and Arizona doesnt hurt, either. THE ORANGE BOWL, in which No. 1 Miami faces No. 11 Nebraska, is a sellout for the fifth consecutive year. Andy Major, assistant ticket director for the Orange Bowl, said an attendance record could be set "With UM in the game, the demand for tickets has been higher than for the past two Major said.

"They're coming out of the woodwork for tickets. It's been crazy." About 8,000 tickets were sold by Nebraska, according to NU ticket manager Joe Selig, who said he thought, that was a good showing considering the recession. There's some good news for Major, incidentally. Nebraska sent the 4,500 tickets it didn't sell back to the University of Miami DYLAN THOMAS, assistant executive director of the Citrus Bowl, says the recession "doesnt seem to have affected either team's following." Clemson fans purchased 20,000 tickets And it was pointed out to me that the Notre Dame following just recently spent a week with their team in Hawaii, and maybe they couldnt justify two big trips with their team in a month." THE FIESTA BOWL, held at Sun Devil Stadium, in Tempe, has about 1,200 of about 75,000 tickets left. Executive director John Junker thinks those might go, too.

"We usually have a pretty good walk-up trade on game day," Junker said. Junker said his economists estimate that this year's game between two Top 10 teams will be worth $25 million to the Phoenix area, compared to $12 million to $15 million when Louisville played Alabama in the shadow of the Martin Luther King controversy. A year ago, Louisville and Alabama combined to sell 8,000 tickets. This year, Penn State and Tennessee sold more than 19,000. Penn State boosters turned out in greater-than-anticipated numbers, said Bud Meredith, ticket manager for the Nittany Lions.

He said he expected to sell 5,000 tickets, but moved 8,400. The school sold 10,800 in 1986 when Penn State played for a national title in the Fiesta BowL Tampa's Hall of Fame Bowl is feeling some economic tightness for its Syracuse-Ohio State matchup. Ticket sales are down and bowl president Bob Sutton attributed it to economic problems making it difficult for people to travel Last year, 63,154 tickets were sold, thanks in large part to nearby Clemson gobbling up more than its share. and 6,500 were bought by California backers, even though they faced a trip to Orlando, Fla for the game. Thomas expects 61,000 or 62,000 for the game, just under a sellout for the stadium.

A sellout would have been easier, he said, if Florida and Florida State weren't playing on New Year's Day. "Sure, there is a certain amount of softness in the ticket-buying public," Thomas said. "But lots of Gator fans are going to New Orleans and maybe some Seminole fans will stay home to watch the Cotton Bowl on TV." Orlando is also home to, among other tourist attractions, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and Kennedy Space Center, and all expect big crowds each day of the holiday week. The hotel occupancy rate is slightly down, but that's due mainly to an increase in the number of rooms to 77,500. THIRD-RANKED FLORIDA has taken a large number of its fans to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, where a sellout is predicted.

Last year's Tennessee-Virginia game was the first non-sellout since 1974. "Advertising for our Sugar Bowl program is as solid as it's ever been," said Mickey Holmes, the bowl's executive director. William Langkopp, executive director for the New Orleans Hotel-Motel Association, said hotels are about 90 percent booked. "It's a little slower than what we might have expected for Notre Dame-Florida," he said. "The recession may be having an effect Possibly it's because it's a midweek game.

The Cornhuskers have been to bowl games a record 23 years in a row. NU leads the series with Miami 4-3. Miami has scored 47 of the 62 times it's been inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Miami has had 14 scoring drives of less than one minute, 22 in less than two minutes and 39 in less than three minutes. Nebraska has had 51 plays of 30 yards or more.

touchdowns this season. 1 hope Miami is not looking past us, thinking that we're just a running team," McCant said. "We can do so many different things and still run the power, too." NEBRASKA'S PRIORITIES on offense are obvious, as the Cornhuskers won the NCAA rushing title. But McCant has passed more often, and with greater success, than any NU quarterback in 15 years. "Nebraska is more balanced on offense than I've ever seen," Erickson said.

"They are big, strong and very physical And we've had our problems stopping the run this year. "Well just have to hope the pride that has helped our defense keep people out of the end zone all year," he said. Miami strong safety Hurley Brown said understanding the Orange Bowl and its significance is easy. "Game day is pay day. Whoever works the hardest will win.

We have talent Nebraska has talent. We pass. They run. Both teams have good defenses. "What's to win? The national championship for us.

And for Nebraska, if they win? Maybe they can talk about being the national champion," he said. "Oh, heck. McCarthy, who unsuccessfully sued commissioner Fay Vincent last year, was elected managing general partner of the New York Yankees on Tuesday as George Steinbrenner's bid to regain control of his team was put off.
