It was a melodious afternoon for the shirtsleeved Tans. Be By AN'GELO ANGELOrOLOLS Staff Correspondent IOWA STADIUM, IOWA CITY, Oct. 21 An innocent pep session declaration by Purdue Coach Stu Holcomb made into an Iowa battle cry today provided the Hawkeyes with their chief inspiration against the team that broke Notre Dame's string. The Monday following the Purdue victory over the Irish, Holcomb, who has contended steadfastly that, the Western Conference race was the part of the schedule he was most interested in, told the Purdue student body: "I promise we'll beat Iowa in the first one, if it's the last thing we ever do." What he meant was that Purdue was going to start off with a Big 10 triumph whoever the foe. His only mistake was that the whole sports world was listening because of Purdue's newly-respectable position as conqueror of Notre Dame.

He'd said things like that before vat pep rallies, But Iowa City heard, too, and painted 2-foot sign in the Hawkeye locker room. It was home-coming here, too, today, and the campus and town were flooded with the Holcomb declaration. More fuel was provided by the Towa press stories that last year's battle at Lafayette ended a bit bitterly, with the Hawk-eyes having seven players hurt and the losing Boiler Makers trying to take the game and ball away from Iowa Captain Jack Dittme'r. But Purdue won the first argument of the day its crosscountry team outrunning the Hawkeye harriers 26-29. 7 0- 9 Alabama.

Ohio State had the ball on the Minnesota 47 as the quarter ended with the score: Minnesota, Ohio State, 7. SECOND QUARTER Ohio State passes clicked as they drove toward another touchdown.
