The Lincoln Star Thursday, May 8, 19M Page 17 By Martha Miller of The Lincoln Star After a one-week trial ballon, Big-8 TV, Nebraska's only independent television station, is throwing in the toweL hank Brosseau, president of television for Amaturo Group Ino, said Wednesday that KBGT-TV would abandon it's short-lived policy of airing unedited feature films and resume editing those that contain nudity strong language. The decision was made after the station received phone calls and letters from concerned parents and mothers protesting the telecast of three unedited fea- tare films in the last six days. The movies shown were "Animal House," "The Greek Tycoon" and "In God We Trust." "Viewer response was running about 7-3 against us," he said. A fourth movie, "Body Heat" was to air unedited 24 The film still will air, he said, but it win be edit- Brosseau said viewers felt there already was a proliferation of objectionable movies on pay cable te-levison and rental video cassettes. He said he personally spoke with more than 60 viewers and they said the unedited movies were intrusive since the station is broadcast locally as well as by Cablevision.

All complaints were well-received and many found that suprising, he said The strongest complaint Brosseau said he heard was a woman who wanted to know where they got the right to take away her rights. "Nobody screamed or yelled," he said The movies originally were telecast to "test the waters," Brosseau said He wasnt disappointed by the news, he said "Our intention was never to be dictative, only reponsive to to the needs of Nebraskans," he said "Family values are very strong here." Brosseau denied the movies were aired to try and capture a larger viewer audience during this month's "sweeps" period May is one of four times a year when local television ratings are measured Stations often broadcast popular Storms pitch sizable hail, movies then to try to increase their audiences. Brosseau said if Big-8 ran the movies only to capture ratings, it would have put more space between the movies. -t. David Ford, action chairman for Citizens Against Pornography, accused the station in a letter of airing the unedited movies strictly for financial reasons.

But Brosseau said the station actually lost money. Fifty percent of both local and national advertisors pulled out after hearing the decision to telecast unedited film Ford said he was pleased with the decision but that he still wished Big-8 TV would eliminate its feature films all together because the majority of them are designed to be pornographic despite editing. Big-8 TV broadcasts it's signal 24 hours a day, seven days a week to 39 Nebraska counties, including Lincoln, Grand Island, Hastings, Norfolk, Columbus, York and Fremont heavy rain at Blaine County From Th Associated Pnsa Thunderstorms moved into north central Nebraska Wednesday, dropping baseball-sized hall and heavy rain in Blaine County while the National Weather Service issued tornado watches for most of central and northeastern Nebraska. The weather service also issued a tornado warning for Blaine, southern Brown and southern Rock counties. The weather service said radar indicated a tornado along the Brown and Blaine county line north of Brewster about 6:35 omCDT Wednesday.

The unstable conditions that caused the storms included a warm front extending across central Nebraska, cool and dry conditions north of the front and warm, humid air to the south, the weather service said Thunderstorms are likely through the end of the week across the state, the weather service said There's a chance of rain, drizzle and a few thunderstorms in the northwest part of the state with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the east on Thursday. Missionary points out 'corruption PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) A -group of western Nebraskans was told Ithat some of the edible beans they sent to this West Indian island country didn't preach their destination because of cor-' jruption in church organizations. "And, please God, if 90 percent of my get through to the poor, I am happy," Ferdinand Mahfood said. Mahfood, the driving force behind 'r Food for the Poor, delivered the beans in Nebraska and Wyoming and collected through the Share the Harvest program. "No system of aid is infallible," he "But it's very sad when I cannot trust a pastor or a nun." Mahfood, a Florida businessman and missionary, said he travels throughout Cantbean to guard against corruption. "I come down here and I run up and down," he said "I keep my eyes open and I watch for corruption.

I'm not saying we don't lose some, but we must lose only a minimum." Most Americans believe corruption doesn't exisit in religious relief organizations such as CARE and Catholic Relief Services, he said. But church leaders sometimes steal food for the poor to sell on the black market, he said Corruption has declined since the regime of former President-for-Life Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier left Haiti, he said Since then, dishonest bishops and government officials have been driven out of office, he said. Duvalier made much of his money by selling food that was meant for the poor, he said Mahfood said he can't understand thievery by government officials. "If you take one bag of rice, God knows that you need a bag of rice," he said "But if you take a truckload that is stealing." Food for the Poor is becoming more adept at guarding against theft, he said "And I will continue to come here, to ask these people what they need I will ask them if they received it and all of it And the people who steal the food they are the poorest of alL" A delegation of Share the Harvest 'Coordinators, clergy and reporters from the Nebraska Panhandle is in Port-au-Prince this week.
