192 6-1 Harris 41 Coaches Capsules Arizona State's Frank Kush: "We're not a 'physical' team, not physical enough to attack Nebraska head-on. But we're a good team, and have a lot of coheskeness on and off the field. The kids are enthused about the game, and are in no way apprehensive about playing a power like Nebraska." Nebraska's Tom Osborne: "I felt in preseason we had enough weaknesses that we were looking at a possible 6-5 or 74 year. A lot of people had to come through for us, and they did. We got improvement from a lot of people and we got tremendous leadership from our older kids." By BOB OWENS Star Sports Editor Tempe, Ariz.

Nebraska, co-champion of the Big Eight Conference, and undefeated Arizona State, champion of the Western Athletic Conference, meet at 1 p.m., Lincoln time! Friday in the fifth Fiesta Bowl football game. A sellout crowd of over 51,000 and a national television audience will watch these two nationally ranked powers in what is expected to be an "emotional" game for both. The Cornhuskers, who won ten games in a row before falling to Oklahoma, view the game as an opportunity for 25 seniors to bow out as "winners," which they have been most of the time. During the past three seasons, Nebraska has won 28 games, lost six and tied one and ended up ranked in the top ten each year in final Associated Press polls. "We were very disappointed in not getting a big bowl bid," co-captain Terry Luck said Wednesday.

"But after being here and seeing everything this bowl does for you, there's no way you can classify the Fiesta Bowl minor. It's really a great came through. "For the most part we didn't have super talent, but we made weekly progress and always seemed to do what we had to do. We had poise and pride that belied our experience." Nebraska, too, opened with inexperienced quarterbacking, but also had an almost all-new offensive line, new linebackers, and other first-year starters at key defensive back spots. Like Arizona State, the Huskers under third-year coach Tom Osborne, showed improvement every week, escaped a couple of potential upsetters (Kansas and Oklahoma State); and rolled into the Oklahoma game with a spotless record.

The only time during the season the Huskers had turnover problems was against the Sooners, losing two interceptions, four fumbles and the game 35-10. So, after recovering from that disappointment after "sleeping" on a Fiesta bid the squad elected to come here to atone for that loss and go out as winners. Nebraska will be going for its seventh consecutive victory in a Kickoff 2 p.m., Sun Devil Telecast CBS, Channels 6 Eight teams, but three of the victories are over Kansas State, the Big Eight's all-time last place team. The Sun Devils defeated Missouri in the 1972 Fiesta Bowl 49-35. That same season Nebraska whipped the Tigers 62-0.

Also, in 1972, ASU won from K-State 56-14 while Nebraska beat the Wildcats 59-7. The Huskers will line up the same way they did at Oklahoma and all of the 85 players here are healthy and ready to play. Senior fullback Tony Davis will be trying to get at least 35 yards in order to become Nebraska's all-time rushing leader. Davis has been a Nebraska hero in the past two bowl victories over Florida (1974 Sugar Bowl) and Texas (1974 Cotton Bowl). "I'm real impressed with their (ASU's) overall team speed," Osborne said.

"Arizona State always has had a lot of quickness in their running attack and this club doesn't seem to be any different. They play an I-formation and we have faced that a lot this year. They also play a 5-2 defense, which we see all the time in the Big Eight. "I do know this we'll have our work cut out for us playing Arizona State, especially in their own stadium. If any of our kids are fat-headed, we'll get that out of them real quick.

Arizona State Coach Frank Kush and his Sun Devil players look at the game as an opportunity to show the rest of the football world that the pollsters have been wrong through the years in not rating ASU and other Western Athletic Conference teams higher. Despite being undefeated at 11-0, the Sun Devils are ranked seventh in both the AP and United Press International polls while Nebraska goes into the game fifth in UPI and sixth in AP.

In five of the past six seasons, Arizona State has won 11 games four times and ten another time. Only last season, when ASU went 7-5, were the Sun Devils not ranked in the top 11 in that period, but their highest finish has been sixth in 1970. Over the past five seasons, ASU ranks first in scoring offense (37.2 points a game), first in total offense (478 yards a game), fifth in passing offense (193 yards a game), and fifth in Bob Owens Sports Editor "After so many years we've finally gotten there. It took us a long time, and we're not done being there. "Plus," the fourth-year player added following a Christmas Day practice, "it makes us feel you're talking about a bunch of old men.

"Of course, we never go into a game figuring to lose, but to win them all you need an absolute combination of skill, position talent, experienced veterans and luck." He opened the season with a sophomore at the skill position of quarterback and two sophs at the wide receiver spots and all Davis and the Nashville Brass.

Nebraska's Scarlet and Cream singers will perform from 8 to 9 p.m. and Davis believes they might be the key for an expected crowd of 8,000 to 7,000. A local Phoenix television station and CBS have agreed to allow the Plaza Fiesta continuous replay of the bowl throughout Friday night on a giant 11 by 14-foot screen. "We've got Judy Winters, a local singer, the Phoenix Boys Choir and the Strumming Amigos, who are just super," Davis points out. "The Nashville Brass has two performances one at 9 and another at 10:30.

"We've also lined up another very popular local group (Azure Blue)," adds Davis. "The place is huge and there's been a lot of work put into setting this thing up about a thousand man hours." Fifty live Christmas trees, decorated in centennial fashion with red, white and blue lights, are the major showpieces. Huge ASU and Nebraska banners are likely to be equally popular. Davis' own home decorations drew attention here Christmas Day. Since he's rooting for Arizona State, Davis designed a couple of appropriate Fiesta decorations.

One shows a pitchfork impaling a husk of Nebraska corn, saying "Fork 'Em Devils." Another pitchfork disects a big orange, saying "Sorry About The Orange Bowl. But the Fiesta Bowl Is Better." It made for some good-natured kidding from Davis' father-in-law, Lincoln's Dr. Art Smith, who follows the Cornhuskers weekly at home and on the road. "I've got to root for the home team," insists Davis. "It kind of hurts going against Nebraska since I've followed them from coast-to-coast, from Los Angeles to Miami, these past few years.

Nebraskans have had a lot to cheer about since Bob Devaney came to Lincoln and turned around a sick program and started all this bowl-trip business. The Huskers went 21 years with just one bowl invitation, went through eight coaches before Devaney arrived, and won just 68 games while losing 125 in the interim. Since then the NU record is 129-26-3.

The Fiesta Bowl game against Arizona State Friday afternoon will be the 12th Nebraska appearance in a post-season classic in the last 15 years, including seventh year in a row. The Huskers have won eight of them, including the last six in a row. Tom Osborne. Devaney's hand-picked successor, has kept up the winning ways of his predecessor in three short seasons. His record is 28-6-1, with two bowl victories included.

Had the Huskers beaten Oklahoma and then won the Orange Bowl game against Michigan, it's likely Osborne would get a lot of votes for coach of the year. Even with the loss to the Sooners, the job done by Osborne and his staff has to rank among the great feats in Nebraska's football history. CBS Television Game The Nebraska-Arizona State game will be the second half of a nationally televised doubleheader Friday. Kickoff here will be at 2 p.m. Lincoln Time.

The first game, starting at 10 a.m. will match the surprising Kansas Jayhawks against Pittsburgh, in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Tex. I'll take the Jayhawks 30-21. 1 picked Nebraska 24-14 in my Christmas Day Column. Rumor has it that Pitt back Tony Dorsett has had influenza and has lost 15 pounds.

Even with him healthy, I'd take Kansas, which was the Big Eight's leading team in rushing offense. The Jayhawks also tied Nebraska as the conference team which protected the football best. Both squads had plus-14 ratios in the giveaway-takeaway department. Kansas reversed its 4-7 record of a year ago and scored impressive victories over Oklahoma, Missouri and Wisconsin. Star handicapper Mort Olshan likes Kansas, too, by 27-17.

He talks not of Pittsburgh's minus-6 ration and says, "Simply stated KU is the steadier, more dependable football team." This weekend's only other bowl game will see Colorado meeting Texas. Olshan says it will be the Buffaloes 27-16 if the Longhorns have to play without quarterback Marty Akins, the Football Writers Association Ail-American pick. If Akins plays1, Olshan says it'll be CU by 24-20. Bowl Football Notes Here are my other Bowl picks: Florida over Maryland in the Gator Bowl Monday night; North Carolina State over West Virginia in the Peach Bowl and Alabama over Penn State in the Sugar Bowl New Year's Eve. It'll be Ohio State over UCLA in the Rose Bowl, Akransas over Georgia in the Cotton Bowl and Oklahoma over Michigan in the Orange Bowl on Jan.

1. Olshan's picks: North Carolina State 27, West Virginia 20; Alabama 17, Penn State 13; Arkansas 27, Georgia 17; Ohio State 30, UCLA 20; Oklahoma 24, Michigan 13. Looking at the Big Eight basketball tournament, Olshan has ranked Nebraska at 10-1 with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Those odds were made, however, before Nebraskas's sweep of the Roadrunner Invitational and road victory over Vanderbilt. Kansas State is listed a 2-1 favorite with Kansas and Missouri at 3-1.

Colorado and Iowa State are 20-1. On his latest Hoop Ratings, Kansas is a three-point favorite in Saturday's first round game. Other first-round choices are K-State, 16 over Iowa State, Missouri, 4 over Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma, 5 over Colorado. Big light Cage Meet Challenge To Huskers enthusiasm for a football game since I've lived down here. "The arguments and harassments are unbelievable," he says.

"I love it. I've talked to Nebraska players and coaches and Arizona State players and coaches and they're all up. We even went to watch the band practice today and they're up. Most people are looking for an outstanding game." Fiesta Wager A friendly Fiesta Bowl wager between A. J.

Bayless Markets of Arizona and Hinky Dinky Supermarkets of Nebraska is not in dollars, but in pounds pounds of beef. Bayless has wagered a steer that ASU will triumph over NU and Hinky Dinky has put a similar amount of Nebraska corn-fed beef "on the hoof." If the Sun Devils win, Hinky Dinky will donate the beef to the ASU band. If the Cornhuskers win, Bayless will donate its steer to the NU Athletic Department. KANSAS CITY (AP) Kansas State, Kansas and Missouri appear to be the teams to beat in the 30th annual Big Eight Conference Preseason Basketball Tournament which opens Friday night at Kemper Arena. If another club has more than a so-so chance, it's Nebraska.

Missouri goes into the preseason fireworks with the best record of 7-2. K-State is 6-2, and Kansas and Nebraska have carved 5-3 marks. Kansas, the defending champion, has been bothered by in ASU 6. 421.3 yards (4,634) 41. 237.6 yards (2,614) 11.

K-State and Iowa State, win-less after seven outings, get the tournament under way. Their game will be followed by Oklahoma State's battle with Missouri. The Cowboys are 4-4. After the opening Saturday night game between Colorado and Oklahoma, both 2-5, Kansas makes its debut against Nebraska, a team that seemingly has come on strong of late. There will be plenty of stars Kansas' Norm Cook, K-State's Mike Evans and Chuckie Williams, Missouri's Willie Smith, Iowa State's Her-cle Ivy, Nebraska's Jerry Fort to name a few.

Kansas may be strengthened by Paul Mokeski, a seven-foot freshman, who has seen no action yet because of a severly pulled hamstring. What are Kansas' chances of repeating? "I've said this before but it still holds true we're improving from game to game," says Jayhawk Coach Ted Owens. "Depth is a problem and will be throughout the season. But I'm still as confident as ever that we can develop into a very good basketball team. We're making progress toward that goal although the injuries have impeded it." After a break Sunday, the tourney will continue with the semifinals Monday night.

The championship game will be Tuesday night. By RANDY YORK Scottsdale, Ariz. Two years ago, when the Fiesta Bowl decided it wanted a Southwestern type Mardi Gras, Don Davis was the one put in charge. Ironically, he has solid Nebraska ties. He was a tailback for Lincoln High in 1957 and piayed on Nebraska's freshman football team that fall.

His father, Bob Davis, is a former standout quarterback at Kentucky and was Nebraska's offensive backfield coach from 1949 to 1956. "No one told me this was supposed to be a victory party for Nebraska," says Davis, a Scottsdale resident for 17 years and a 12-year Arizona State season ticket holder. Regardless of the outcome of Friday's Fiesta Bowl between the Cornhuskers and Sun Devils, Davis' job is to supply Arizona hospitality at the second Plaza Fiesta at the Phoenix Civic Center. He's hoping for a better turnout than last year's initial venture, which drew 4,000. "It was too confusing last year," admits Davis.

"We had a free area and a pay area and people didn't know which way to turn." This year, participation in the Plaza Fiesta has a price tag. But Davis is convinced the post-game entertainment from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. is worth the price of admission. Headlining the show is Danny Steelers? some sports fans.

The new-look Colts, directed by first-year coach Ted Marchiboda and quarterbacked by 24-year-old Bert Jones, sported a miserable 1-4 record before they went on an impressive nine-game winning streak to finish the season. Jones was a big factor, completing 59 per cent of his passes for 18 TDs while being intercepted only eight times. Rams' Harris, McCucheon May See Playoff Action juries but, despite the handicaps, came close to beating two ranked teams, Notre Dame and Kentucky. Missouri ran up a 6-0 record before defeats by UCLA and Hawaii. After losing to the Rainbows in Honolulu last Saturday night, the Tigers bounced back Monday night and outscored Hawaii 99-91 even though they had to finish the game with only four players.

K-State has suffered both of its losses on the road. The Wildcats haven't won the preseason event "Chuck Knox knows me pretty well," said Jaworski. "I have all the confidence in the world in my own ability. Believe me, that will never change. "The Pittsburgh game meant quite a bit to me because I got a chance to contribute.

Up to now, I haven't made many contributions to the Rams. I'd like to help this club get to the Super Bowl. "It's not easy when you're not playjing. You can get discouraged. I don't think a coach wants a guy who is satisfied with sitting on the bench, either.

He wants a guy who wants to start. That's what winning is all about." Cinderella' Tag To LOS ANGELES (UPI) The Los Angeles Rams' Christmas stocking was filled with a couple of pleasant surprises Thursday as Round 1 of the National Football League playoffs against the St. Louis Cardinals fast approached. Following Ram workouts Christmas Day, a dub spokesman reported that sore-arm quarterback James Harris was back throwing the ball and that running back John Cappelletti, stricken with mononucleosis a week ago, had returned to the backfield. Coach Chuck Knox said he probably won't make an announcement until the morning of the game whether Harris of Ron Jaworski will start at quarterback Saturday afternoon.

The coach also said there was a chance that Cappelletti would see action. In other injury notes, 15-year veteran tackle Charlie Cowan reported that his sprained ankle felt a little better Thursday, but he was still held out of the drills. Running back Lawrence McCutcheon, prevented from making an attempt to reach the mark for the third straight year in the Pittsburgh game because of a pulled thigh muscle, was now expected to play Saturday. li Jaworski does get the call to start against St. Louis, it's a sure bet the second-year pro will be ready.

4 PITTSBURGH (UPI) Franco Harris thinks the media's image of the Baltimore Colts as this year's Cinderella team is a lot of bunk. "If you think of Baltimore, they have a history of being in the playoffs. If anybody is a Cinderella team, we still are," says Harris, the top running back of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers..
