A listener can't help but compare Hoover with the early Bob Dylan and the current Phil Ochs. He sings somewhat like Dylan and writes somewhatlike Ochs. Hoover's sound is "old-style" folk rock with an emphasis on folk. His back-up group uses mostly acoustical instruments, with very little hard rock finding its way into the music.

Yet, the group is driving the beat for Hoover and occasional strings and horns are added to spice things up. Two of the best cuts are "III Say My Words" and "Kommst Du Doch Mit Mir," a haunting European sidewalk cafe "ballad." This theme, also called "Set Yourself Free," is the grand finale for the album, complete with a large gospel-type choir and that the-Negro no longer accepts his historic status as a passive factor in the American culture. He is moving to take charge of his destiny. In "When the Revolution Comes," the reasoning behind the selection of the) title "The Last Poets" becomes obvious "When the revolution comes, guns and rifles will be taking the place of poems and essays." The poets are emphatic in their belief that the black man will turn to violence if words fail. "Two Little Boys" is far and away the best poem in the album.

Sarcasm is replaced by intensity and after a chilling description of black children caught on the crime-drug merry-go-round, it -concludes: "Oh beautiful black minds Create, create the world for children to play with lifeAnd not with death." It is this call for affirmative, constructive action that keeps "The Last Poets" from being mere inflammatory rhetoric. mmmmmmm llillllilll quite a bit of good ol' foot thumpm music. Most of Hoover's songs sound sarcasm, chanting a litany of wrongs against the black man wrongs inflicted not only by whites but by the black man himself: "Have you seen two little boys running past you with a lady's purse face puffed up, tracks (needle punctures) in their arm? Have you seen the sickness of our people?" "When the revolutio.n conies, some of us'U probably catch it on TV." The words and the voices belong to "The Last Poets" (Douglas 3), three young black men who are active spokesmen for revolution. Their names Abiodun Olewole, Alafia Pudim and Omar Ben Hassen testify that they consider themselves Afro -Americans. They speak to their fellow blacks in a very different kind of album.

It consists of 13 poems recited in three-part spoken harmony to the accompaniment of a single frenetic drum. While the poems vary widely in subject matter and quality, they are all common to the black experience. And while they are addressed to blacks, people of all colors and cultures can relate to them. The poets main point is V- f- the same. But this is not particularly a bad trait.

Not when you can sing and write like Hoover.
