"I'm from Boston, see, and they (the Eagles) physically beat me up," said Dixon, who galloped eight yards to score the first touchdown for the Owls with 9:24 remaining in the first quarter before a capacity crowd of 55,000. The victory was the. Owls seventh against three losses with one tie. Boston College wound up 0-11. Waldrep returns home DALLAS (AP) Kent Waldrep returned home from Russia Sunday stronger of limb and spirit and carrying a message of hope for countless other spinal cord injury victims confined to wheel chairs.

The 24-year-old former foot-1 ban star at Texas Christian University, paralyzed four years ago in a game against Alabama, has been receiving special medical treatment at the Polenovsky Neurological Institute in Leningrad. "They are just incredible men," Waldrep said of his Soviet physicians. "They have the unique capability to combine medical professionalism, compassion and a sense of honesty." Approximately 100 reporters and applauding friends and spectators greeted him upon his arrival Sunday afternoon at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Waldrep told them that although he cannot walk yet a combination of enzyme, oxygen and physical therapy unavailable in the United States has made him stronger. "I wish it was available to everyone in a wheel chair," said Waldrep.

"It should be." The native of nearby Grand Prairie, Texas said the Soviet approach to physical therapy is to get a patient out of a wheel chair and onto his feet to strengthen his muscles. "Standing up was a great feeling. The world looks a lot better standing up," Waldrep said. Waldrep plans to return to Leningrad in a year or two at the most, he said. But for now he will use a supply of enzymes he brought back from Russia and continue the Soviet physical theraphy methods on his' own.

He said he should be able to -show some more movement in -the next two to three years. "I'm as realistic as anybody, but my goal is to one day stand up on my own. It may be with crutches and it may not." The former TCU running back also is vocal in his criticism of American doctors. "The attitude they've shown toward someone trying to lm-. prove his situation that is not his choice in the first place is hard to imagine." San Die3 downs Bucks Toronto, 5-3 BUFFALO, N.Y.

The Sabres went ahead on the only goal of the first period, rookie McKegney scoring on a goalmouth pass from Perreault. The assist was Per-reault's 700th point in nine seasons of play. Don Luce made it 2-0 early in the second period by batting in a rebound after a long shot by Stewart Ian Turnbull scored for Toronto almost immediately after play resumed following the fight taking a pass from Darryl Sittler. Chicago's J.P. Bordeleau dug the puck out from behind the Red Wings' net and passed to Bob Murray, who in turn fed Bulley waiting in the slot.

Bui-ley responded with his ninth goal of the season, drawing the Hawks even at 3-3. It was Bordeleau, after setting up Ivan Boldirev for the Hawks' first goal in the second period, who brought the Hawks within striking distance at 3-2 when he tallied with less than four minutes remaining by pushing the puck and Vachon into the net. MILWAUKEE (AP) Lloyd Free's two freethrows In the final seconds, capping his team-leading 28 points, boosted San Diego to a 107-106 National Basketball Association victory Sunday over the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks, whose best lead of the night was 98-91 with six minutes to play, trailed 105-102 when the Clippers got a second zone-defense technical that sent Milwaukee's Brian Winters to the freethrow line. Boston College tied the score at 7-7 in the opening period on a one-yard run by fullback Dan Conway before Temple went ahead for good in the second quarter when running back Mark Bright scored on a two-yard run. Following a 38-yard field goal by Tim Morrman to narrow the Eagles' deficit to 14-10 with 6:04 remaining in the second period, Broomell scored his first touchdown of the game with 1:09 left in the half, and Temple boosted the lead to 28-10 at the outset of the final period on Broomell's 4-yard touchdown run. The Eagles then wrapped up the scoring and made the final margin close on one-yard touchdown runs by Kevin Benjamin and quarterback Jay Parazola. "It's been a good season," Parazola said diplomatically without referring to Boston College's 0-11 record. "We'll be better next year." ing moments.

Winters led Bucks scoring with 28 points and Marques Johnson had 25 points, 11 of them in the third quarter when Milwaukee moved from a 58-55 halftime deficit to an 80-79 lead. After Milwaukee developed a seven-point lead, the Clippers pulled ahead 99-98 in a surge fueled by Kevin Kunnert's tip-in, a Nick Weatherspoon layup and Randy Smith's three-point play. Smith finished with 17 points. Free and Winters each scored nine points in the first quarter, which the Clippers led 32-27. They led 43-35 in the second quarter on Free's three-point play.

But Kent Benson's eight second-quarter points helped Milwaukee to close to within three at intermision. The Islanders narrowed Montreal's lead to 2-1 with their first shot on net at 13:13 of the same period. Mike Bossy scored his 22nd goal and ninth in his last seven games when he beat Montreal goalie Ken Dryden with a backhand drive. "Pierre Mondou improved Montreal's lead to 3-1 at 17:02, but Gary Howatt scored for the Islanderss 16 seconds later. In the second period Reggie Houle gave Montreal a 4-2 lead.

"I came here with the intention of winning," said the 28-year-old runner from Spokane, after leading 7,203 runners in the sixth annual Honolulu Marathon. "I was shooting for about 2:18," said Kardong after finishing in 2:17:04, 20 seconds ahead of the record pace set by Jack Foster of New Zealand in 1975. Kardong, who finished fourth in the Montreal Olympics in 1976, said he hopes to run in Moscow in 19K0.

Benji Durden of Lawrence-ville, Gam, was second in 2:18:04. He was followed by Ta-kehiko Kikuchi of Japan in 2:18:22, John Lodwlck of Dallas in 2:18:26 and Kenny Moore of Eugene, in 2: 19:08. Jeff Wells, the Dallas seminary student who won last yar's race, was fifth in 2:19:35. Patty Lyons of Quincy, took more than a minute off the women's record. Her time was 2:43:08, compared to the 2:44:44 set by Kim Merrill in 1976.

The 25-year-old former swimme said she was trying for a time of 2:45 and was surprised by her record finish. She placed second in the Falmouth Road Race in Massachusetts and in the Niki Marathon in Eugene, earlier this year. Marty Cooksey, who won the international women's marathon in Atlanta tins year, was second in the honolulu race, followed by Cindy Dalrymple of Oregon, who was last year's, women's winner here. In light of what happened Saturday night in Lexington, a statement once made as to the difference between Big Eight football and basketball never seemed more cogent The Big Eight's best football teams, it was noted, usually find ways to beat the Ohio States, Notre Dames, while its top basketball teams seem always to lose to the Kansas, rated fifth in the nation and No. 1 in the Big Eight, lost to tenth-rated Kentucky Saturday night, 67-66, by squandering, in order: A nine-point lead In the first half; a seven-point halftime advantage; and, most amazingly, a six-point lead in the final 31 seconds of overtime.

We had a six-point lead with 31 seconds to go," moaned Kansas Coach ted Owens, "and then the officials eased off. They'd called a fine game to that point If they'd called the game the way they had up to that point then there would be celebrating in our dressing room." While the Jayhawks were snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, six other Big Eight clubs were also engaged, with Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas State coming up winners. K-State methodically crunched Cal-Poly of Pomona at Manhattan, 87-71. Colorado, with Clayton Bullard hitting a 25-foot jump shot in the final seconds, nipped Southern Methodist at Boulder, 71-70, and Oklahoma treated the home crowd to an 84-68 runaway over Louisiana Tech. Tyrone Branyan hit 28 points to lead Texas to an 85-70 victory over Oklahoma State at Austin and sixteen-ranked Marquette stiffled Missouri and rolled to a 74-57 victory over the Tigers in ilwaukee.

If Kansas is to fulfill the promise it supposedly has this season, the young Jayhawks must first erase from their minds the spectre of the nightmarish finish at Kentucky. Kansas was seemingly in command of the game the entire way, nursing six-and seven-point leads throughout the night. But the Wildcats of Coach Joe B. Hall, the defending NCAA champions, tied it at 56-56 on a Kyle Macy steal and layup with 2:45 left in regulation. Kansas played for the final shot but didn't get off a good one, Darnell Valetine's 18-footer missing with three seconds left.

The Jayhawks immediately took charge in overtime. Freshman Tony Guy, who totaled 13 points, 'drove the lane and later made a sparkling assist to let Johnny Crawford stuff a shot for a 60-56 Kansas edge. After another Macy bucket, Valentine, the game's top scorer with 27 points, stole the ball and hit a layup and then, with 31 seconds left canned two free throws for what looked like an insurmountable 66-60 lead. insured to $40,000 by FSLIC. Robinson fired in a 60-foot backhander past Islander goalie Billy Smith at 3:34 of the opening period.
