The Lincoln Star II Tuesday, Jon. 5, 1971 devaney Issues Challenge To Irish iSPOOT SIGMIS 4 i By Hal Brown Sporti Editor, The Star A but we won the bowl game," said Devaney whose team defeated Orange Bowl opponent Louisiana State 17-12. "Notre Dame Is a fine team," Devaney added Monday morning. "I think they should be among the top two or three maybe, but I don't see how they could be first." Devaney's remarks followed a statement made Sunday by Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian who said his team "accepted a greater challenge by playing No. 1-ranked Texas in the Cotton Bowl than Nebraska did in going to the Orange Bowl." "He's full of R.S.

to. make statements like that," said Devaney. "Notre Dame was only able to score a field goal against LSU on their own field. And I don't think Notre Dame would like to have another go round with LSU." Parseghian feels his team should be strongly considered in the final Associated Press polls this week which will determine the nation's national collegiate football champion. Including their 24-11 Cotton Bowl victory over Texas, Notre Dame's record is 10-1.

But Nebraska is the only major undefeated team with a 11-0-1 showing. "We also had an Invitation from the Orange Bowl," Parseghian said. "But we knew we couldn't be No. 1 by going to the Orange Bowl. Someone else then would have had to beat Texas." Devaney said Texas wasn't the team to beat Nov.

14, when Nebraska got the Orange Bowl bid. Notre Dame was ranked No .1 at the time. "When we made our choice, Notre Dame was No. 1 In the country. They were unbeaten.

The boys took a vote and they all said they wanted to play the team that was the highest ranked at the time. They wanted to play Notre Dame. So I called Parseghian to try to find out where they were going to play but he couldn't tell me. He just didn't know at the time." Notre Dame received its bids the following week. Nebraska accepted the Orange Bowl bid Nov.

15, and Devaney said, "it was later that week that the polls came out and Texas was No. 1." "You can't say we were running away from the top team in the country," Devaney said. Devaney noted that the only blemish on his team's record was a 21-21 tie with Southern Cal early in the season. And it was Southern Cal which finally beat then undefeated Notre Dame 38-28 on Nov. 28.

"Parseghain is overlooking the two most important facts," said Devaney. "We did better against our two common opponents LSU and Southern Cal and we are undefeated. They are not. It's as simple as that." By HAL BROWN Star Sports Editor Miami Nebraska's snow-bound Huskers, forced to spend the past two days In sunny Miami by blizzard conditions in Lincoln, will try to get home again this morning. A decision was made Monday noon by University adminls-trators and Regents to keep the team here through Monday night.

The Orange Bowl winners are now scheduled to leave Miami at 9:30 this morning, arriving in Lincoln at 11:30 a.m. Before departing for Tampa, where he is due to coach in an all-star game Saturday, Husker head coach Bob Devaney extended an invitation to Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian, whose two teams are awaiting the outcome of the final Associated Press poll. "We're Just laying around down here," Devaney said. "You can tell Ara that if he wants to bring his team down here, we'll play them." Defensive line coach Monte Kiffin also went to Tampa Monday to be interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Tampa University. Tampa officials also were Interviewing other candidates this week and said they hoped to make a decision by this weekend.

littIe doubt that the 'WW Nebraska football team was the greatest in Husker history. For openers, it didn't lose a game and no Husker team could boast of that feat since 1915 and with aU due respect to those Huskers of 1915, there can be little argument that, as a group, today's athletes are superior to those of 55 years ago. To this writer, who has covered closely, traveled with and sometimes lived with all but the first of coach Bob Devaney teams at Nebraska, this one has to be our favorite, slightly edging out his 1963 outfit. There are many similarities between those two outfits, not the least of which is an abundance of talent. And both teams had the utmost confidence in that ability.

But while that 1963 team had a quiet confidence, this team's confidence was a brash confidence. They didn't mind telling you how good they were and they didn't mind telling you they could beat anyone. The confidence of this year's team bordered on cockiness. But it was a cockiness that was refreshing even if it did cause the coaches some anguish upon reading some of their comments ahead of a game. Murtaugh, Schneiss Leaders The squad selected two "tough" guys to be their leaders when they picked linebacker Jerry Murtaugh and fullback Dan Schneiss.

Murtaugh set the tone for the season when he told Big Eight Skywriters, "We're going to beat hell out of Southern Cal," and after the 21-21 tie, he figured just that had happened. And when a writer asked Murtaugh after a game what made the NU defense so great that particular day, he responded by asking, "What do you mean today? We're always great." While Husker defensive coaches were worrying about the LSU offense for the Orange Bowl, monster Dave Morock told them, "Don't worry. All LSU runs is the draw play and we can stop that." And when Nebraska's coaching staff was worrying about what to do with LSU's walking end, who shifts out of the backfield just before the snap, a maneuver Kansas City used against the Minnesota Vikings in last year's Super Bowl and brought Chiefs' coach Hank Stram's now-famous comment on the sidelines, "Look at them running around out there. It looks like a Chinese fire drill," Murtaugh had the answer ready: "We'll just send our monster man out to cover him," he told the coaches. This confidence showed up again after LSU had gone ahead of the Huskers by 12-10 with one quarter to play.

As the Husker offense took the field after the ensuing kickoff, a Husker lineman told quarterback Jerry Tagge, "Just call anything you want and we'll make it work." Clutch Performances This final drive that led to the winning touchdown with the Husker offensive line coming through on their promise to Tagge was typical of so many clutch drives that Devaney-coached teams have made since his arrival in Lincoln nine years ago. The Huskers hadn't been able to put much of a drive together against a tough LSU defense in the second and third quarters after taking a 104) lead and to anyone, who hadn't been there before so to speak, there was little reason to think they could do it now when they really needed it. But Husker teams under Devaney have done the same thing before. They did it against North Carolina State nine years ago. They did it at Minnesota.

They did it at Colorado. They did it at Missouri. They did it in Lincoln against Kansas a year ago. When they had to do it, they did it. Seeing all the things his Husker players had been saying down here, defensive line coach Monte Kiffin, a member of that 1963 team, decided he ought to talk to the team.

"We've got a lot of talkers," he told them. "Now, we've got to find out if we've got some doers." This Husker team has talked a good game all season. They also have proven all season that they can play a good game. They've been always able to put their actions where their mouths were. 12th; Linda Cochran, Richmond, 22nd, and Janet Turner, 24th.

"After we played Nebraska, I thought they should be Number One," said Dan Devine, Missouri's coach, "and after we played Notre Dame, I thought they should be Number One. But Ithink on the basis of their record now Nebraska deserves to be Number One. I didn't think anybody would get though our league undefeated this year. "I think Nebraska's backfield personnel are better than Notre Dame's although Joe Theismann is just a great back," Devine continued. "But Nebraska has more physical strength.

Those are two great football teams, but the thing about Nebraska is that they got through the Big Eight without being beaten." "This team Nebraska beat us by five points," says Charlie McClendon of Louisiana State, which dropped a 17-12 decision to the Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl. "The other team bnly beat us by three." Notre Dame edged the Tigers at South Bend, 3-0. The Irish joined the race for No. 1 by dumping top-rated Texas 24-11 in the Cotton Bowl. The final Associated Press poll will be published Tuesday afternoon.

"If I have to commit myself, I'll go with Nebraska strictly on their record (10-0-1) to Notre Dame's (10-1)," says Army's Tom Cahill, although the Cadets lost 28-0 to Nebraska and 51-10 to Notre Dame, both on the road. "In my mind," said McClendon, "there's no doubt who's No. 1. It's Nebraska. Nebraska did more things against us offensively than Notre Dame did, although defensively Notre Dame probably is stronger.

"Nebraska is awfully strong on offense. They have real good running backs and that Tagge boy (quarterback Jerry Tagge) is something else. We were hanging onto his leg and he still threw the ball 45 yards. What it comes down to, though, is that they tied Southern Cal and Notre Dame lost to them." "Nobody ran against us the way Nebraska did," echoed LSU defensive tackle John Sage. Cahill needed a few moments to mull over his choice.

"Nebraska has a little more speed offensively," he finally decided. "Joe Theismann probably gives Notre Dame an advantage from the point of view of the aerial game, but those Nebraska guys Tagge and Van Brownson throw well, too. Joe Yu-kica, a former assistant to Blackman, was offered the job, but elected to remain as head coach at Boston College. Despite Blackman's 104-37-3 record, including 17-1 the last two season, in 16 years at Hanover, Crouthamel emphasized "we are not going to try to mold this team into a Blackman image." "You adapt a system to your personnel," he said. "Our defense, which had six shutouts last fall, was developed on a trial and error basis. It was done almost exclusively by assistant coaches. We expect to keep a great deal of our defense intact.

On offense, we'll certainly keep a lot of things run by Bob Blackman, but we'll run an offense we think will be successful with what we have."
