Yds. Ave. Hedrick 9 402 44.7 since midway through the 1969 season a situation that is unlikely next week. On the other hand, WSU officials can't remember if or when the Cougars have ever been ranked. It's of little consolation to Big Red fans, but no coach has ever started his career with a bigger victory than Warren Cowers accomplished Saturday.

An ex-Husker great as a player from 1958-62 and an assistant coach at Nebraska for the past eight years as NU earned a bowl bid each of tlwe seasons he returned to his alma mater with a team that was 3-8 last fall to register the stunning upset. "They earned the victory and deserve it," Osborne admits. "I still think we can be a good football team. You like to learn something about your team in the early games. And I think we have.

But you like to learn as you win, not lose. It was an awfully discouraging way to start. We'll just have to regroup and go after Alabama now." another TI) toss to Kelly, this time for a 20-yjrd. score and it was 14-7. Hilly Todd pulled the Huskers within four points at the start of the final frame, kicking a 19-yard field goal when another MI drive bogged down at the WSU two yardline.

Washington State countered with a 35-yard held goal, moving within range after the ensuing kickoff. Thompson passt's for 20 and 15 yards ate up most of tile distance. "I've never seen a better passer than Thompson," linebacker coach John Melton admitted. "He could really read the coverages He'd look off one way and then throw the other." "You've got to give Washington State a lot of credit for the way they picked up our blitzes and red-dogs." Husker defensive coordinator Lance Van Zandt noted. "We blitzed a lot, but just didn't get there Their blockers did a great job of picking up the extra people.

We've got to get better on our pass rush." Soon after WSU's countering field goal, Nebraska's doom was sealed when (Jarcia was thrown for two consecutive losses while attempting to pass. The Huskers had their backs to the wall after a clipping penalty had pushed them to their own ten. Curia was first nailed for a nine-yard loss to the one and two plays later was trapped in the end zone for a two-point safety to produce the final score. The outcome marked just the fourth opening-game loss for Nebraska since Washington State turned the trick 20 years ago, 12-34 in 1957. The Huskers lost the '59 opener to Texas, 0-20; to USC, 21-31 in 1969 and again in the Los Angeles Coliseum to I '('LA, 17-20, to open the 1972 campaign Hob Devaney's last as a head coach.

The last two times, Nebraska rebounded to earn a Sun Bowl and Orange Bowl post-season appearance. Nebraska has been ranked among the nation's top twenty teams every week Baylor falters, Steward 1 10 Berns 2 17 Craig I Brown 1 29 Punting No. Yds. Ave. T.Smith 3 116 38.7 Punt Returns No.

It seemed like everything I'd call, they would hit the nail right on the head and be ready for it." For (Jarcia, the afternoon was especially frustrating. He opened the contest by marching the Huskers to the WSU five-vanlline only to see I-back Isaiah Hipp fumble a handolf. "I thought 1 had the ball in there (Hipp's hands)," Garcia said.

Hipp, the speedy sophomore who had been in the game two plays before the fumble and who didn't return the rest of the afternoon after the miscue said, "I was low and the ball was high and I couldn't get the feel of it. I wish the play would have been a pitch instead of an isolation. I'm not afraid to run an isolation, but I think I could have got loose on a pitch." In a game that saw turnovers kill the Huskers, Garcia was involved in a second fumble in the third quarter. With Nebraska nn WSU's nine-yardline, Garcia rolled to his left, lost control of the ball and the Cougars again recovered to halt a drive. "That was plain carelessness on my part," Garcia said of the second bobble.

"When you get close to the goal you have to hang onto the ball. Someone just stripped it out of my hand. I should have had two hands on it." In the fourth quarter, as he dropped back to pass, Garcia was also involved in a safety when Washington State defenders tackled him in the end zone. "I couldn't see putting the ball up when I couldn't find anyone open," Garcia said. "I probably should have thrown it up inlo the 2lltli row of the stands.

But I was thinking about an interception." Garcia, who passed for 64 yards on three of five completions, was almost as battered up as Sorley. The Los Angeles senior suffered a deep bruise on his right hand and a strain to his left knee. "1 hurt the knee on the safety," said Garcia of the leg which was heavily bandaged after the game. "People probably thought I was faking it (injury) after that play but I was hurt." Another Cornhusker who was a bundle of bruises was I-back Kick Herns. But Berns, who rushed for 153 yards 100 in the first half i and was the workhorse in the NU backfield with 26 carries, said leg cramps were his only problem.

That and the loss. "We did a lot of good things but we just were not consistent." Berns said. "I felt we had them going all the time but the big breaks killed us. We could have had this game and we should have had it. "It's an old cliche." Herns continued.

"But you have to learn from your losses. We better learn to be consistent. We could have easily won the game by three touchdowns." Herns, along with Garcia, Sorley and fullback Dodie Donnell appeared to be the only players with any serious bumps and bruises. Donnell suffered a strained neck on the opening ku kolt and saw action on only one running play before retiring lur the alternoun. Scoring Story Allison, the senior quarterback who guided Tech to a SWC co championship last season, kept the Raiders moving despite 'the scaring heat and a typically feisty Baylor defense.

The temperature on the Baylor Stadium Astroturf registered 112 degrees just before kickoff and Allison heated it up even more with his 54-yard touchdown romp on a perfectly executed option play late in the opening quarter. Baylor quickly tied the game on an 80-yard sprint up the middle by Greg Hawthorne, but early in the second quarter Allison drove Tech 75 yards and ended he go-ahead march with his perfect touchdown strike to Williams in the flat. Bill Adams provided the only scoring of the second half, kicking a 24-yard field goal for Tech on the fifth play of the fourth quarter. The game was billed as a test of Tech's revamped defense against Baylor's youthful offense and the Red Haiders defensive unit was easily up to the job. Other than a long touchdown burst by Hawthorne, Baylor could get no closer to the Tech end zone than the Raiders' 29.

The first time I bumped him but he inked me and got past for the score. The second time I tripped on his foot and fell. But I have no excuses, I should htwe done a lot better." Cornerback Rene Anderson On WSU quarterback Jack Thompson: "He's a great p.nser, the best I've seen. His release was so quick.

If you don't get a good pass rush that kind of quarterback will rrirt you. He's just super quarterback. And his receivers ran grudt patterns." Safety Larry Valasek On Thompson: "The thing that amazed me was his lease He's about as quick as they come. He'd look me i and then boom, he come right back. When he looked vie olf I'd lean the other way and then have to make a omplete pivot.

His timing with his receivers was perfect ho lust kept picking away at us Fullback Keith Steward On carrying most of the fullback load after Dodie Donnell injured his neck on the opening kickoff: "It shocked me to see that much action To be honest, I've piuod agjinst bettor teams than Washington State, but desiro made up tor a lot It's going to he hard to bar against Alabama but we'll give it our best 'l it Linebacker and co-captain Jeff Carpenter "Snnot, I still can't believe this has happened. We had the effort and we worked hard preparing for this game. But we go' no turnovers, no breaks. Thompson was an ocoile'it passer who mixed his play well He caught us in too wrong defense a few times and capitalized on it." l-back Rick Berns: I down, really down right now. When I look at the ji-s Sunday I'll yet doan again.

But we have to come liacf Vjnday We have to learn from this." Visitors' views Compiled by Wayne Gonyea It was like listening to a broken record as the Washington State players expressed their feelings thoir new coaching staff: Linebacker Dean Pedigo "I love the coaches. I nere no negative stuff If you do something wrong ''to no yelling, only instruction. They stop play, show vot; v. did wrong and how to correct it." Safety Mark Patterson "Our coaches are great. We knew we could do it We just had to play our techniques i ist i -o tnoy (the coaches told us to.

They never lie to ts Quarterback Jack Thompson: On Washington State's game plan: Our coaches told us in oarly spring wo were going to be a 60-40 team. Which njy it would be would depend on the game situation. We t'lod to establish our running game, but I don't think we did as much as we wanted to. We just felt we had to pass. Monster Don Schwartz: On recovering an Isaiah Hipp fumble at the WSU five yard line on NU's opening drive: It just kind of reinforced us, put a li'tle confidence us.

We had people missing their keys and we made someadiustments. We felt if they iMU; didn't get the long pass or long gainer that they would make a mistake. The odds are greater when you run more plays. Linebacker Dean Pedigo: On the hit on NU quarterback Tom Sorley at the WSU two yard line, killing a TD drive: "Don Nevels i Linebacker) made that hit. That's the play that turned the whole game around.

That just blew them (NU) to hell. If he wouldn't have made that hit I was right there todo it. On the Washington State defense: "We play a technique defense. That's what we are designed to do. If everyone does their techniques, there are no leaks We have a rubber-band defense, buf we won't break.

We are never going to break. We knew everything Nebraska was going to do, and they did just what we expected. If we would have played technique the whole game without any mistakes, they never would have scored. You can quote on that. Flanker Brian Kelly On the Nebraska players: I've never played a team class as Nebraska A lot of teams don't have class thpy do They were real good sports No cheap or nothing, just good clean football.

That's the way it ,) rv played everv time Sophomore defensive tackle Steve Kalinoski On inadvertantly beginning his warmups with the Nebraska squad: "Give me a break. I was just horsing around But teammate Steve Swift disagreed, "No he wisn't he didn't know where he was. What did you think vion you didn't recognize anybody?" Kalinoski responded, "I'm just a freshman really. I r-urt last year and didn't play. I'm just a little (6-5, 230 us 'arm boy and I've never been around that big a rowd before.

WHAT CAUSES RUST? Simply, rust is a chemicalelectrical process. It's an electrical current that attacks and destroys metal. Moisture, salts, pollutants, and even two metals combine to form a battery that creates an electrical current.

PETROLEUM vs NEOPRENE-THE SYNTHETIC RUBBER Most rustproofing is a petroleum base product. It's oil tars drip, smell, melt and crack. It's heat failure prone and it contains sulphur which actually contributes to the electrolytic rusting action. Steel Seal with Neoprene, the tough synthetic rubber invented by DuPont not only stops the electrical action of rust, but because of it's elasticity, it will not crack in seams and stress areas as petroleum products do. Neo-prene is used by the U.S.

Navy to protect their ships. It's also used to coat electrical wires from 110 volts up to 69,000 volt power You can't do that with a petroleum product. THE WARRANTIES Most warranties warrant the owner, not the car. Steel Seal offers one of the broadest guarantees in the industry. The warranty stays with your car when you sell or trade meaning more money for you.

It's transferable. Steel Seal also offers a repair warranty. Simply, in the unlikely event rusting does occur in the protected areas, Steel Seal will repair the damage. There's NO IFS, ANDS or BUTS.
