The organization of executives who purchase raw materials and supplies for industry said its seasonally-adjusted composite index rose to 61.4 percent last month from 58.3 percent in March, an indication that the economy grew at a faster rate in April. The association's report is a closely-watched indicator each month, providing some of the latest information on the economy's current performance. If the survey findings are confirmed by other reports for April, it will be an indication that the apparent slowdown in March was temporary.

Many economists had welcomed signs the economy was cooling off, something that would relieve inflationary pressures. The report was released to news AJ.
