But for the first time in his 14-year career, against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Memorial Stadium Saturday, he watched his Nlttany Lions lead by two touchdowns -and then lose.

Paterno didn't like what he saw, but a partisan red-clad crowd of Nebraska fans loved it Coach Tom Osborne's Cornhuskers overcame a 14-point first-quarter deficit by staging one of their patented come-from-behind surges. Nebraska tallied 28 points in the second period on the way to a convincing 42-17 victory. In addiition to the 76,151 fans on hand the 101st consecutive sellout of Memorial Stadium a nationwide TV audience watched as Nebraska became only the fourth opponent to score more than 40 points against a Paterno-coached Penn State team. Nebraska, in serious trouble last week against Iowa when trailing 21-7 midway through the third quarter, was also behind Utah State in its opening game. "Maybe last week's experience against Iowa was a blessing in disguise," center Kelly Saalfeld observed.

Saalfeld, who played cheerleader while psyching up the Big Red crowd by waving his arms along the sidelines after Nebraska took command, added, "The Iowa comeback gave us the confidence and knowlege that we could do it again. LSU (2-1) lost to USC, 17-12 Florida Sporls By Randy York Staff Sports Writer The new fuse to Nebraska's explosive offense doesn't see himself as the man with all the weight on his shoulders.

I'm supposed to be the maestro, but really, I just feel like one of the members of the orchestra," senior quarterback Tim Hager said Saturday after Jis first Nebraska start, which resulted in a 42-17 conquest of Penn State. "You have to remember there are so many great athletes here, the quarterback dfesul have to do it all on his own," Hager said Especially when Junior Miller's around with his emotional batteries recharged from a disappointing performance against Iowa. Hager, named Nebraska's Most Valuable Player after completing 14 of 22 passes for 215 yards, hooked up with Miller for the Buskers' first two touchdowns, seven minutes apart in the second quarter. The first was an U-yarder out of a double tight end formation where Miller needed all his powers of concentration because a defender temporarily blocked his view. The second was a picture perfect display of ball handling and execution by Hager, who faked a handoff to Andra Franklin before rolling left to attract the flow of defenders.

A Penn State cornerback fell for the trick and Miller, who had started a pattern over the middle, darted back to the specifically Inglewood, his home'-and Corvallis, where he played be-f; fore transferring to Nebraska. "I don't mean that to get revenge' with anybody. I just want to show that I can; run," he said. Viewers in Oregon may have been sur-. prised with the Redwine they saw tear; ing up the artificial turf in Memorial-Stadium.

He didn't head for the sidelines each time Tim Hager handed him the ball. Saturday, a more physical Redwine dealt out punishment instead of just tak-" ing it. "At Oregon State I was getting a lot of hits and it started shaking me up, so 1 began using the sidelines," he said. Not so against Penn State. Redwine was turning up-field, picking out defend-1 ers and making them pay for bringing him down.

Like the safety he slammed into at the Nittany Lion 21-yard line fol- lowing a 19-yard gain in Nebraska's first touchdown drive. Redwine hit the defender chest high and knocked him over backwards. "That typified what I've been trying to do; I'm more satisfied with the way I was deliv-; ering the blows than anything," he said, recalling the hit. Nebraska offensive backfield Coach; Mike Corgan was pleased with Redwme's physical play. "This is a little different kind of football than he's been used to playing," said Corgan.

"The thing is, on the wide stuff, he's been exposing himself to some open? shots (from the tacklers). '1 wasn't about to let somebody bring me down," Miller said. "We needed the touchdown and my mom and brother were in the stands from Texas." "I wish they'd come to more games," Nebraska receiver Coach Gene Huey said. "They seem to get him going." Getting Junior going has been a problem for Huey until this week "He had a definite lack of effort against Iowa," Huey said.

"He was facing the possibility of less playing time if he didnt improve this week." Hager faced more than that. He faced the possibility of expulsion late in the first quarter when he suffered an interception which Penn State turned into a 30-yard touchdown and 14-0 lead. "I really have to thank Coach Osborne for giving me another chance," Hager said. "I made a dumb mistake. I guess it's not very far from the outhouse to the penthouse, is it?" "That interception didn't bother me because it wasn't Hager's fault," Miller said.

"I knew we could come back, even if we were three touchdowns behind instead of two. There's too much talent on this team in every spot I'm not the type to fold up and start packing and neither is the rest of the team." "Hager showed a lot of poise. Iowa officials had anticipated such a display and replaced the $3,000 aluminum goal posts with less expensive wooden models. The north goal post was torn down with about two minutes left and in the final minutes the Iowa enthusiasts By AAlke Babcock Staff Sports Writer Jarvis Redwine tore the clear plastic wrapper off a powder-blue T-shirt which read: "Penn State Nittany Lions." Nebraska's junior I-back pulled it on as he explained where the T-shirt came from. "An eastern writer called me Wednesday night (for an interview), and I asked him if he would bring me and my wife (Frances) something with 'Penn State' on it," Redwine said. "He said, 'What if you I told him he could bring it anyway, but I wouldn't wear it." Redwine began his collection of opposition T-shirts last week in Iowa City; he couldn't get one from Utah State.

Saturday, he picked up No. 2, with his first 100-yard rushing performance as a collegian, and wore it after Nebraska's 42-17 victory over Penn State. His previous yardage high was a 95-yard (16 carries) effort in one half against Tennessee during his sophomore year at Oregon State. One week after that game, he quit the team. The swift transfer, gained 124 yards in 22 carries against a physical Penn State defense.

He ripped through and around the Nittany Lions almost as easily as he ripped the wrapper on his new T-shirt or as easily as Lion defenders ripped jerseys off him. According to the NU equipment room, he lost six tearaway jerseys during the afternoon. Mosely's 229 yards was the second highest one-game performance in Iowa history. Ed Podolak holds the school record of 286 yards set in 1968, and Frank Holmes held the previous record for times carried with 34 in 1972. It's only taken sophomore walkon John Goodson two games to tie it.
