OUR 18-MONTH GUARANTEED SAFETY NYLON TIRES 5- Bob Devaney, Who received a $1,500 raise as Nebraska football coach, and his wife Phyllis beam at son Mike's graduation from the university Saturday. Nt troos-i noM a No Medicare For These Two Medicare may in style these days, but it's going to have to move fast to catch up with Peg Anderson and Coutz Taber, two of Lincoln's more active sports participants.

Peg and Coutz are no spring chickens and you aren't likely to find them in any of the latest A-Go-Go places (although no research was done on this phase), but you also won't find them lying around the house waiting for the Social Security check to come In. The reason you likely won't find them doing the Frug and the Watusi at a Lincoln night spot isn't because Peg' Is 72 years bid and Coutz is 68. It's more likely because they just don't have time to fit it in with their bowling activities. Peg Booked Up As one of her bowling companions explains, 'Teg is pretty well booked up," meaning with bowling assignments. The 72-year-old former nine-time Lincoln Ladies City Golf Champion, who still finds time for the links in the summer, bowls regularly in seven leagues.

"I also substitute frequently In' two other leagues," she quickly points out, bringing the total to nine. Peg bowls regularly at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, at 6:45 Tuesday and Friday nights and at 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights. Her substitute appearances come Monday nights and Tuesday mornings.

No Retirement Plans At 72, Peg Is thfe oldest bowler in the Capital City, but retirement is a word you don't use with Peg around. "I have no Intention of quitting," she notes. "One of the most enjoyable things about bowling Is being with the younger girls because makes me feel younger." Carrying between a 142 and 147 average in all nine leagues, Peg notes, "I never expect to get any better, but I hope I don't get any worse, either." Teams Made On Golf Course One of Peg's teams was started by herself and Jean Hyland, another top golf name, when Hollywood Bowl opened its doors to league play in 1956 and this team has always refurbished itself from golf course acquaintances. "Peg and I became acquainted through golf and I guess this team got its start on the golf course," Mrs. Hyland recalls.

The team, sponsored by Scott's Pancake House, lost two members after last season. So where do you go to find new members for the bowling team the golf course, naturally. The newest additions to the team are Mrs. Taber and Inka Brolsma, who join Peg, Jean and Barbara Spence with Millicent Scott as the No. 1 substitute.

"I got on the team when Jean asked me last summer about it," Coutz explains. Where did the conversation take place? "On the golf course," replies Coutz. This team, with Barbara averaging 168, Jean 150, Peg 147, Coutz 144 and Inka 134, will bowl in the Ladies City Tournament at 6:30 Thursday night at Plaza Bowl. Peg Causes Problems But getting into the city tournament was somewhat of a problem for this team, mainly because of Peg. "Peg is so active that with all her teams, it was 'hard finding enough times on the schedule to take care of all the teams she bowls with," Mrs.

Hyland points out. So what about when the winter bowling leagues end for Peg. "Oh, I keep bowling," she says. "I bowled in four leagues last summer and played golf also." And Peg had one special request as she headed for the door and another bowling assignment. "Don't you dare put any of those silly pictures in the paper of me when I was younger," she pleaded.

Stand back, OUR 27-MONTH GUARANTEED FIRST LINE TIRES 2 for 18.88 (00x13 tubalesi blackwall University of Nebraska regents Saturday rewarded coach rfob Devaney for his football successes by granting him a $1,500 annual pay raise, to $23,500 per year. His appointment as head football coach and professor also was extended by one year to Dec. 31, 1971. The salary hike makes Devaney the best paid mentor in the Big Eight except for Oklahoma's Jim Mackenzie, hired recently from Arkansas at a figure announced at the time as The figure includes base pay of $20,000, plus $5,000 expenses and endowment fund. Current pay of Big Eight football coaches: Doug Weaver, Kansas State, Eddie Crowder, Colorado, Dan De-vine, Missouri, Jack Mitchell, Kansas, Clay Stapleton, Iowa State, Phil Cutchin, Oklahoma State, not announced but reportedly in the $18,000 to $20,000 bracket.

Devaney last fall brought Nebraska its third straight Big Eight title and its first undefeated regular season in 50 years. The Cornhusk-ers lost to national champion Alabama, 39-28, in Miami's Orange Bowl New Year's night. Currently the nation's win-ningest major college football coach on a 73-16-5 career record, Devaney has posted 38 wins and six losses since moving to Nebraska from Wyoming four years ago. Devaney's six assistants, who have been drawing $13,000 a year, were raised to $14,000. The aides include offensive backfield coach Mike Corgan, defensive secondary and end coach Jim Ross, defensive line coach George Kelly, offensive line coach Carl Selmer, freshman coach John Melton and freshman line coach Cletus Fischer.

In addition to holding the rank of professor with tenure, Devaney has been provided by Nebraska fans with a $100,000 insurance policy to i his remaining here. The University of Miami made overtures to Devaney two years ago and spurred Nebraska contributions to the insurance policy fund, which had been lagging. There have been no known serious efforts of late to lure him away, however. Devaney was hired at $17,000 but received successive annual pay hikes to $19,000, to $21,000, and a year ago to $22,000. Nebraska's Governor is paid $18,000 a year.
