Building Scheduled New Highline JC Opens to 400 Students HIGHLINE The Highlino school district welcomed a new college here Monday The Highline junior college. It was the first such academic birth in King county in more than 50 years. College was authorized by the Stale Board of Education. July 28. First classes Monday morning.

In untt, the doctor bill for the infant institution will he presented 'Sept. 26, when district residents will be- asked to vole toward construction. school -will be housed the next Iwo years in part of Glacier high school and in portable 'classrooms on the 'Glacier grounds. 'The chief architects of the college's destiny have been Carl Jensen, superintendent of the Highline school, and Dr. Rodney Berg.

Rerg- wears the hats ot two college presidents that ol Highline and Junior College, has been named president at Everett, but also will continue lo serve Highline, at least another month. Meanwhile, Highline is suffering no dearth of applicants as Berg's successor. One application arrived recently from Iran. The attendance opening day was to be close lo an absolute peak for the facilities at hand. The college originally had intended lo take on only 250 to 300 day students, hut a careful retooling of class schedules allowed the extra load.

The academic schedule will include business administration, the humanities, foreign a guages, the creative arts and social sciences, all lor credits transferable to a four-year institution. The vocational program, not yet fully developed, will include electronics, drafting, technical mathematics and offset printing. faculty of IB has been counseling registrants several days. Three of the IB have doctor's the rest master's. Several arc on Ihe verge of doctorates.

The college is using one double Glacier classroom, full time and share such facilities as the cafeteria, shops and typewriters. About 40 percent of Ihe students come from the Highline district. Almost as many are graduates of Seattle high schools. The first units of the new college, when completed, will have 35 classrooms, with accom- modations for some 2,000 students in a school "day" running from 8 o'clock in Ihe morning (a to at night. Besides the Glacier classrooms, the new college is housed in five large portable classrooms, with another portable for faculty offices, another serving as an administration building and a third as a book store and student lounge.

Highline's night-school 'program of extended-secondary and other subjects will continue as' lasl year.
