Tuesday, September 29, 1970 Thft Lincoln Star 10 Devaney, (iff in NU HEAD Put On Fashion COACH LETS WIFE SELECT ATTIRE iSPORr ir By Hal Brown SporU Editor, The Star. i v-v. 1 NBA Tilt On Tap Tonight Twin brothers Tom and Dick Van Arsdale will captain their respective teams when the Cm-cinnati Royals and the Phoenix Suns square off at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Pershing Audftorium in an NBA exhibition game. Tom Van Arsdale, who sue ceeded Oscar Robertson as captain of the Royals this year, inherits from Oscar the pressure of being the top star on the team.

With five pro seasons behind him, he is ready for the role. After two and a half seasons in Detroit, Tom came to Cincinnati and developed into an NBA All-Star last winter. Playing in the shadow of a super-star, he scored 22.8 points a game and was the 11th highest scorer in the league. Though only 6-foot-5, and probably a better guard than forward, he spent more time in the frontcourt where the Royals a lot of folks around the country are treating military people these days." But the coach added those mistakes were really no joking matter. "What stopped us on offense was that we were stopping ourselves by fumbles and mistakes like penalties," he said.

"We did everything in the book to stop our offensive drives. "We can't continue to do that. And we told our players that. If we're going to be stopped, we've got to make the other team stop us by outplaying us. "We have a good offense.

We've got a good line and we've got good running backs. And our quarterbacks threw well, perhaps as well as they've ever thrown it. "We've got some fine receivers in Johnny Rodgers at least the colors don't clash too badly." The Husker coach also explained why the Husker defense was represented by three coaches Kiffin, John Melton and Warren Powers while Carl Selmer was the only offensive coach present. "That shows that we were more pleased with our defense Saturday than with our offense," he observed. "The reason we left Carl come was that he runs the projector (for showing of the game films).

"Mike Corgan and Tom Osborne (the other offensive coaches) are meeting with our quarterbacks trying to impress upon them that they've got to run upfield, not toward the sidelines." He also had an explanation for what happened on the play involving quarterback Jerry Tagge when he obviously was Enthusiasm Grows With Age Connie Dicrking's golf game is getting worse with his advancing age, but his basketball is getting better. And as far as Connie is concerned, that's good since it's at basketball, not golf, that he makes a living to support his wife and four daughters back home in Cincinnati. Perhaps one reason for his declining golf game and his improving basketball abilities is that he makes basketball a year-round thing and part of that year-round thing includes a junket that brings him and his Cincinnati Royals teammates to Lincoln's Pershing Auditorium tonight for a 7:30 p.m. National Basketball Association exhibition game with the Phoenix Suns. Another factor might be his enthusiasm for the game of basketball, an enthusiasm that is still growing at the age of 33 and that isn't even dimmed by having to make a series of one-night stands in such places as Sioux City, Iowa; Topeka, Lincoln, Neb.

and Sioux Falls, S.D. "It's rather tough," he says of the schedule that sees them playing in one of the above-mentioned cities one night, flying to the next stop the following morning and playing again that night, then repeating the same routine again and again. "But it's a necessary thing and I enjoy playing basketball so much that it doesn't bother me." Not Really A Job And Dierking doesn't look at the tough grind of pro basketball as a job, although most people who have ever had to do the traveling that a pro basketball team does, would likely consider it a tough job. "I guess it should be considered a job," he agrees, "because that's how I make my living, but I don't look at it as a job. I guess I don't because I always dreamed of playing pro basketball and it's so much fun for me." Those dreams begart years ago when he was a youngster growing up in New York City and watching the New York Knickerbockers' when he could.

"I was so big when I was in high school that I guess it was natural for me to think about playing basketball," he points out recalling that as a high school youngster he was 6-8 and 180 pounds. El Davson Hurls 4 TP Passes DEFENSE SCORES He's now a 6-9, 230-pounder with even gain weight during the season diet and be careful," he notes. While the Royals' star has food, he has seen his appetite a the passing years. Getting Easier Now Rather than getting harder as he gets older, Dierking finds the sport getting easier for him and he admits it may just be a psychological thing. "When I first joined the Royals, I was riding the bench," says the Cincinnati star, who is beginning his sixth year with the Royals, "and that was tough.

"I think it's getting easier each year and that may be because now I'm playing regularly," he admits. "All the traveling we have to do is tough, but I love to play basketball and as long as I'm playing, it's easy." Dierking can't pick out any one big thrill he's had in pro basketball and that may be because of his enthusiasm for the game. "To me, my biggest thrill comes every time I step onto the court," he says. Another factor that makes it easier, according to Dierking, is the changes in the mode of travel that has taken place in pro basketball since he joined the league. "When I first came into the league, we were traveling in our own cars or by bus," he points out.

"Now we're flying by charter planes on trips like we're on now. Display FOR LUNCHEON and Woody Cox did a good Job of filling in for Guy Ingles, who will be back this week. "Fullback Dan Schneiss did a fine job of blocking and our offensive line did a good job of protecting our passers." Defensively, Devaney noted that the Black Shirts had apparently regained the pride that existed on previous Black Shirt units. "We have become accustomed to seeing our defense among the leaders In the league statistics," be pointed out. "But last week we were near the bottom in every department and we pointed that out to our defensive players.

The victory pushed the Mets into a second-place tie in the National League East.

The clubs have three games left, all against each other. Jerry Grote opened the Mets' 10th with a double off loser Hoyt Wilhclm and a sacrifice put pinch-runner Al Weis at third. One out later Dave Marshall then walked before Garrett drove his 12th homer. Donn Clendenon of New York tied the score in the ninth at 3-3 with a two-out homer after Cleon Jones singled. The home run was Clendenon's 22nd and gave him 95 RBI for the season, a club record.

"George Watson and Scott Koch are two of the top receivers in the conference and with Gary Bendinger and Dave Evans at quarterback, they (the Broncos) are a scoring threat every time they put the ball in the air." Of the Bulldogs Frazier says. "Concordia has a good football team with all-around qualities. They use the play action a lot and their receivers are big and strong.

"Rod Giesselmann is one of the top signal-callers in the league and he will give our defensive secondary its toughest test of the year." Entering Saturday night's game Concordia is sporting a 1-1 record having clobbered Doane, 35-0, in the season opener and then losing to Yankton College last Saturday night, 24-3. In handing the Colts a stunning loss In their home American Conference debut under the National Football League realignment, the Chiefs subjected old pro John Unitas to one of his most humiliating performances. Dawson tossed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Gloster Richardson on Kansas City's first series, and the defending world champions were off and running before a national television audience. Two Robinson interceptions-led to the next 10 Kansas City points.

Then the swift veteran picked up a Norm Bulaich fumble and rambled 46 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-0 in the second quarter. Dawson, who gained 152 yards with nine completions in 12 attempts, hit on a 13-yard scoring toss to Robert Holmes after the first Robinson interception, then heaved another for 54 yards to Frank Pitts for a 31-7 halftime lead. Frazier has a good reason for his confidence in stopping the running attack of the Bulldogs. Against Midland and Friends which are basically running teams, the Broncos only allowed 58 yards.
