Elsewhere the offensive club looks well established with seasoned veterans at every position. It will be the biggest club In years with a team average of 205 pounds per man. The line is a hulking 221 per man. Defensively some newcomers must come nis Butler from Pius X.

And a recent addition to the club is corner back Russell Ellis. He replaced veteran Tom Parmlnter who suffered a broken collarbone and is out for at least the first half of 1970. Both Ellis and Butler have brothers on the offensive unit. Dick Caster is a line standout senior at 232 pounds and James Ellis is a flashy flanker. Plainsmen host Dana.

The 1970 klckoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. under a new set of lights; at O.N. Magee Stadium. Heading the Wesleyan cast again this year will be senior quarterback Steve McKelvey. He already owns every passing record in the book.

McKelvey, a Lincoln High product, hit on 80 of 187 attempts last year for a fine .428 mark and 926 yards. Equally as important was the fact he his only five passes in Nebraska We sleyan University football coach Harold Chaffee will try to put it all together this year. The Plainsmen flashed signs of greatness last year at limes while putting together a 5-4 mark in Chaffee's first year at the helm. Primarily the team became the fourth highest scoring unit in the school's gridiron history with 201 points. PAT-Wegin (3) runs. ft STEVE McKELVEY Game Traffic Channeled Football fans attending the first University of Nebraska home game today will be able to use both the north and southbound lanes of Interstate 180 to get to and home from the game. Both lanes of 1-180 were open to traffic Friday afternoon. City Traffic Engineer Robert Holsinger also announced that changes will be made in the traffic pattern, especially following the game, "to reduce congestion as much as possible." Holsinger said plans call for traffic to be cleared out of the stadium area within 20 to 30 minutes following the end of the game against Wake Forest. Several streets will be turned into one-way streets and "No parking anytime signs" will also be posted.

Thompson, who came to Southeast from Columbus, Ohio, scored on a two-yard run in the first quarter as the Knights overcame an early deficit to take a 7-6 halftime lead. The Knights then swapped touchdowns with the hosts in a hectic third period with Thompson scoring on a 44-yard run and a 34-yard pass from quarterback Don Osvog.

Hinton's seventh homer of the year sent Fritz Peterson to his 10th defeat. He has won 17. Carl Morton fired a two-hitter and Gary Sutherland's run-scoring single in the eighth inning gave the Montreal righthander his 16th victory of the season as the Expos edged Philadelphia, 1-0. Morton then struck out before Sutherland poked his game-winner, the fifth hit off Short. Dennis Menke rapped a two-out, run-scoring single in the eighth inning, snapping a 2-2 tie and sending the Houston Astros to a 3-2 victory over Atlanta. Jim Wynn stroked a two-out single, stole second and came home on Menke's hit off reliever Hoyt Wilhelm, 6-4. Harmon Killebrew unloaded his 41st homer and .220 hitter Frank Quilici his second in support of Bill Zepp's five-hitter as the Minnesota Twins drubbed the Chicago White Sox 6-0. Mark Belander rapped a run-scoring single in the 13th inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

The victory, coupled with the New York Yankees 3-2 loss to Cleveland, lowered Baltimore's magic number to seven in the American League East race. Mike Epstein ripped a home run and rookie right-hander Bill Gogolewski picked up his first major league victory as the Washington Senators stopped Detroit, 4-2, extending the Tigers losing streak to four games. The loss dropped New York into second place in the hectic NL East race, one-half game behind Pittsburgh and one-half game ahead of Chicago.

Both the Pirates and Cubs had Friday off. Vida Blue, 'a 21-year-old lefthander with only 42 major league innings behind him, stopped Kansas City on one hit Pat Kelly's two-out single in the eighth inning as the Oakland A's blanked the Royals 3-0. Blue, making his second start since the A's recalled him from the minors eight days ago, stymied the Royals until Kelly smashed a grounder into right field, then went on to record his second victory and first complete game in the majors. He struck out seven, walked four and hit one batter. Gibson allowed only three singles until the ninth when the Mets broke through for both their runs.

Wayne Garrett walked, Cleon Jones singled for Tigers. Buster Barber ran for six. Steve Moore 15 for a first down and Henderson took it in. The Links had 181 yards rushing despite a 21-yard loss on the next to last play of the game. One Lincoln High TD was called back by penalty in the fourth period when John Osborn scored from 46 yards out.

Another 25-yard pass play from Pat Weixelman to Ken Adkins at the Hastings three was also nullified by an infraction. McNamara Date 1932 Manager John McNamara of the Oakland Athletics was born in Sacramento in 1932. -RUSHING DIFFERENCE Grand Island Tops Lincoln East, 35-28 BEARS FALL, 31-30 Late Cuozzo TD Pass Lifts Vikings Weaver Good trap blocking and hard running behind it by Mark Weaver, who scored three touchdowns, led Lincoln High to an easy 28-0 romp over Hastings in a season grid opener for the pair Friday night at Seacrest Field. Weaver, a 170-pound junior halfback, scored on runs of 43, 15 and 25 yards to pace the Links. Ralph Henderson had the other score on a two-yard burst. The loss was the 11th straight for the visiting Tigers, who out-gained Lincoln High in the first half, but picked up only 26 jferds rushing after the intermission.

Neither team played well in the first period. The Links failed to get a first down and had only four net yards on the ground. Hastings had two first downs the Bears were forced into a punting situation. Bobby Green boomed a 57-yard punt which was downed on the Viking 2-yard line and one play later Lee fumbled and the Bears recovered. Two plays later Jack Concannon hit Linzy Cole with a 4-yard touchdown pass to pull the Bears within one point at 24-23.

Two plays after, the following kickoff McRae picked off a Lee pass and raced 28 yards for a touchdown with 5:47 to play. Then eight seconds into the second quarter Weaver scored the first of his three TDs with a 43-yard bolt up the middle on a third and 14 situation. Greg Poole kicked the first of his four extra points. Hastings then drove to the Lincoln High 25 where a fourth down pass fell incomplete. Nevels' TD Run Lifts Pius Beatrice Paul Nevels went 13 yards with the winning touchdown with only 1:50 remaining to give Pius a 12-7 victory over Beatrice here Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Only five seconds later, Thunderbolt defensive back Tom Kempe picked off a Beatrice pass at the home team's 46-yard line to preserve the victory for the Thunderbolts. Nevels' winning TD was his second scoring jaunt of the game with the Pius senior going 51 yards in the third quarter for the first Thunderbolt tally after Beatrice had taken a 7-0 lead at halftime.

The Beatrice score came on a one-yard run by Jerry Kerl. The Thunderbolt defense had to come up with three strong defensive efforts after Beatrice recovered Pius fumbles Inside the Pius 20-yard line. Evans went off left tackle on a quarterback option, cut back to his right and outran the Spartan secondary for the tally. The winning touchdown came with 2:49 remaining in the contest. East was nursing a 23-27 advantage when Evans made his triumphant scamper.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard first in the game when Scott Copple threw a 12-y a touchdown pass to Jack Ball. Copple completed the first six passes he threw in guiding East to its initial score. The Islanders came right back when George Kyros plunged over to paydirt from the one-yard line after a sustained drive that stayed mainly on the ground. Grand Island ground out 383 yards rushing in the game, while the Spartans kept in the contest of the passing arm of Copple who ended up with 210 yards. Then the Islanders tallied By Associated Press A 40-yard touchdown pass from Gary Cuozzo to Clint Jones with five seconds to play lifted the Minnesota Vikings to a 31-30 victory over the Chicago Bears Friday night in a National Football League Exhibition game.

Until the dramatic windup, the Bears seemingly had stolen victory from the Vikings as they cashed in on a pair of fourth quarter mistakes for two touchdowns. They turned a fumble on the Viking two-yard line into a touchdown and less than a minute later Bennie McRae intercepted a pass by substitute quarterback Bob Lee and raced back 28 yards to give the Bears a 30-24 lead. But Cuozzo, who had engineered three previous Viking touchdowns came back off the bench to lead the winning drive. The Vikings grabbed an early 144 lead in the first quarter before the Bears put on a Savage comeback and left the field at halftime trailing 14-13.
