Holmes, coach of a small college division team with a 7-3 record, had the unenviable task of facing the Big Red Cornhuskers, who have a New Year's Day appointment with second-ranked Alabama in the Orange Bowl. "They're a heckuva football team," Hohnes said. "They don't make mistakes while we made four." Jerry Tagge, called by Nebraska coach Bob Devaney as the "best quarterback in the country," passed for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth in guiding the Cornhuskers to their 12th victory of the season.

Hawaii's running game, which had worked well all season, was completely bottled up by Nebraska's forward wall, led by all-Americans Rich Glover, Willie Harper and Larry Jacobson. "We always could run," said Holmes, "Even against the major colleges we've played in the past. But we just couldn't run against this team." The Rainbows, who had averaged a little more than 196 yards rushing in their 10 previous games, could only grind out 47 yards on the ground against Nebraska's stingy defense. Larry Sherrer, the first Hawaii player to gain more than 1,000 yards in a single season, picked up only 15 on 14 carries to bring his season's total to 1,129. Tagge upped his total offense mark to 2,333, tops for the Nebraska team.

The Nebraska defense picked off three Hawaii passes and one Rainbow fumble, the four mistakes wihich coach Holmes pointed to after the game. -vw 3 ll H-Mears At 1 lr i But a for nothing as it's cafed back on a penalty.
