Walls pointed out, "Before the NIAC was formed we played about every small Nebraska college but just couldn't fit Hastings into our schedule. "One main problem was Hastings belonged to the Nebraska College Conference until last year." Frazier said, "I don't have any idea what color jerseys Dana will wear and until I talk Huskers Advance To Fourth New York (UPI) Stanford has ridden the strong passing arm of Jim Plunkett back into the nation's top 10 college football teams. The coach said he would have played Bowman this Saturday against Nebraska. "Bowman was a fine defensive back and was our best at the time he got hurt," Rodgers said. The squad was put through a one and one-half hour' drill, a half hour shorter than usual on Mondays. Rodgers said a lot of the players were suffering from minor injuries and couldn't go at full speed.

It hasn't happened often in the history of the weekly award either to a lineman or a back. It happened Monday. A panel of sports writers named defensive guard, and sometimes linebacker, Adam Vital of Missouri as the Big Eight lineman of the week. Vital, was selected for his outstanding performance in the Tigers' 21-7 losing effort last Saturday to Nebraska.

The choice was unanimous. Vital intercepted two Nebraska passes and recovered a fumble and played a major role in keeping the Bengals going defensively for three quarters. Nebraska finally exploded for two touchdowns that broke a 7-7 deadlock in the fourth quarter. Vital gave Missouri ihe big defensive plays even though the Tigers failed to capitalize on them. Other linemen nominated included Charles Clarington, Kansas State defensive tackle; John Carter, Oklahoma State sophomore defensive guard; Don Popplewell, Colorado center and Ed Periard, Nebraska middle guard.
