Prisoner is finally extradited to Florida OGALLALA (UPI) A man who fought his return to Florida for 14 months has been extradited to that state. Florida officials transported John D. Mahon, also known as Frederick LeRoy Cheek, 34, back to the state during the weekend. Mahon was stopped for speeding last year, but a license check indicated the vehicle he was driving was stolen in California. In June 1981, he was charged with marijuana possession and not having an operator's license.

Law officers claimed Mahon was actually Cheek, an escapee from a Florida prison who had been serving a 15-year term for burglary. Mahon said he was not Cheek and filed a habeas corpus suit claiming he was being held illegally. However, in May, the state Supreme Court ruled in the habeas corpus suit that Mahon was not being held illegally. Last week, Mahon was identified by fingerprints as the Florida fugitive, and was ordered returned. A malpractice suit and a $400,000 civil rights suit Mahon filed against an Ogallala physician and Keith County and its sheriff are pending.
