"I'm sick of hearing that Our defensive line is no good.

I think this game was won inside," he said. "Sure, they were going to get some of those eight-and 10-yard gains, but they couktnt take the ball and shove it on Saturday. Junior defensive tackle- The junior from Mechanlcsburg, Greg Gattuso had to adjuslto playing opened Penn State's scoring and Nebraska's Ail-American center, Pave Rimington. 'V. it- 't ended it on Saturday by catching touchdown passes from quarterback Todd Blackledge.

The were identical Penn State lined up with two tight ends, and the other one, Mike McCloskey, wasn't open. Bowman caught the first, a 14-yarder, with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter. It was his first pass reception of the season, no doubt a surprise to some of his Nittany lion teammates, who had nicknamed him "Stone Hands." "It's tough getting that first one," said Bowman, who has played seven positions since he came to Penn State. He was recruited as a linebacker, a position which he played "one day." Then he was moved to defensive end, followed by defensive tackle one side, then the other nose guard, offensive guard, and, finally, tight end. "Coach (Joe) Paterno moved me there mostly for my blocking, but I told him he might be surprised," Bow-, man said.

He certainly took Nebraska's defense by surprise on the game-winning reception. The play was a "run- Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge (14) had plenty of time to find receivers and on this play, found Kirk Bowman in endzone for the winning score. Huskers- From page 1D- f4 iv-r fi 'v- -Jk x. 1 'f mm 1 4 7 12-yard run by Rozier got the ball in close from where Gill scored on a quarterback sneak to give the Huskers their short-lived 24-21 lead. Seibel kicked off to the Penn, State end zone, but Nebraska was charged with a 15-yard penalty which enabled the Lions to start from their 35 instead of the 20.

It was Penn State's turn for last-second heroics. The winning touchdown came witlfjust four seconds remaining. "Thai's a tough, tough way to lose," Osborne said. "The only other game that was such a heart-breaker was the Cotton Bowl game against Houston after the 79 season." In that one, Houston also sewed a three-point ictory, 17-14, on a pass play with just nine seconds left. "Penn State obviously has a great team," Osborne said.

"From the films, it didn't appear they played up to their potential in their first three games. They played well at times, but not for the entire four quarters like they did today. Hopefully our players learned thai they can come from behind in a tight game, although it would be a lot better to come from behind and win than come from behind only to lose. "We were hampered when Roger Craig reinjured his thigh and was only effective for about the first quarter of Die game. And the crowd was so noisy that we couldn't audible.

If the game had been in Lincoln we could have done a few more things. Naturally, I'm very disappointed. But the kids played hard and held their heads up. We'll just have to regroup and go forward from here." to learn from this. Now we'll see what they are made of.

Auburn next week will be another lough game on the road." McBride said the Huskers were "very hesitant and the young players appeared to be nervous during the first half." Golden opportunity Nebraska had a golden opportunity at the outset when Penn State mishandled the opening kickoff and had to start from its own 7-yard line. Three plays gained just three yards and the Huskers took over after the punt on the Lions' 47. But, on fourth-and-two at the Penn State 28, Gill bobbled the snap from center. After another possession each, Penn State started from its own 17 and went the necessary 83 yards in just six plays to take a 7-0 lead. Passes of 13 and 34 yards ate up most of the distance, from where Black-ledge found tight end Kirk Bowman in the end zone with a 14-yard TD loss.

It was his 13th touchdown pass of the season after throwing for just 12 all last year. Lrrant pilchout Early in the second quarter, Nebraska drove from its own six to the Penn State 22 highlighted by GUI passes of 16 and 27 yards to Ricky Simmons and Brown but that threat ended with an errant pilchout which Penn State recovered. The Lions made it 14-0 by going 71 yards in six fjlays. Tailback Curt Warner scored from two yards out. time running out, it was Nebraska which put together some last-second heroics.

Three Gill passes 20 to Brown, 12 to Simmons and 18 to Fryar got the ball to the Penn State 30. The fourth, a 15-yarder to Fryar, resulted in a touchdown with just 38 seconds left in the half when the NU wingback broke a pair of tackles and scooted the remaining 15 yards into the end zone. Penn State still led, 14-7, but Nebraska was back in contention. The Huskers took the second half kickoff and marched from their 20 to the Penn Slate 18. But, when the drive stalled, a field goal attempt by Kevin Seibel was foiled when Gill muffed a low snap from center.

Penn State capitalized on the break by going 83 yards in seven plays to take a 21-7 lead. A Blackledge pass to flanker Kenny Jackson produced the score. Pulled within touchdown Nebraska took the ensuing kickoff and came right back, marching 80 yards in 15 plays to pull within a touchdown at 21-14. Gill runs of 15 and 21 yards highlighted the drive which was climaxed by a 2-yard touchdown pass from Gill to I-back Mike Rozier. Then came the fourth-quarter excitement.

On its next possession. Nebraska gained the Penn State 20 before stalling Seibel hit a 37-yard field goal this lime and the Huskers were within four at 21-17. Nebraska got the ball one last time after NU cornerback Ned Harris intercepted a Blackledge pass in the end zone. Nearly seven minutes (6:52) remained and the II uskers were 80 yards away. Short-lived lead Fouf Gill passes of 13, 17, 11 and 13 to Brown, tight ends Jamie Williams and Mitch.
