1 Prefontaine Top Runner Williamsburg, Va. I.T) -Sophomore Sieve Prefontaine, the highest returning finisher from last year, won the individual title Monday and apparently led Oregon to the team crown in the NCAA cross country championship. Prefontaine took the lead for good between the first and second miles of the six-mile Kingsmill Plantation course at the college of William and Mary. He was timed in 28:00.2 clipping almost two minutes off the course record set by William and Mary's Howell Michael. Oregon was listed with an unofficial team total of 86 points to 88 for Villanova, but the Wildcats asked for a review of the films because coach Jim Elliott felt one of his runners was misplaced at the finish.

Meet officials gave no indication when the viewing results would be available. Prefontaine finished about 30 yards in front of Villanova's IC4A champion, Donal Walsh, who was clocked in 28:08. They were followed across the finish line by Donald Kardong of Stanford in 28:10, Gregory Fredericks of Penn State in 28:12 and John Bednarski of Texas-El Paso in 28:14. Bednarski was fourth last year. NCAA mile champoin Marty Liquori of Villanova, who has been injured much of the fall and was a doubtful starter, got the Wilcats a ninth-place finish, winding up behind Keith Munson of Oregon State, Bob Bertelsen of Ohio University and Sidney Sink of Bowling Green.

Dennis McGuire was 19th at 28:50. Greg Carlberg of Nebraska was 22nd in Jerry Hogan, Missouri, 27th in George Stewart, Oklahoma State, 33rd in 29:11, and Mark Visk, Missouri, 47th in 29:21. Other linemen nominated include Rick Mason, defensive end at Oklahoma; Barty Chappell, linebacker at Oklahoma State; Charles Clarington, defensive middle guard at Kansas State; Ed Periard, middle guard at Nebraska; Rocky Wallace, defensive tackle at Missouri, and Gary Palmer, defensive end at Kansas. Bears' Douglass Out For Season Chicago iffi Left-handed quarterback Bobby Douglass who threw four touchdown passes in Chicago's 31-13 victory over Buffalo Sunday, is out for the season with a broken left wrist. The Bears learned Monday that Douglass suffered what he believed at the time was a sprain in the second quarter of the National Football League game and subsequently threw three of his touchdown passes with the broken wrist. It was Douglass' first start of the season and the former star from Kansas said: "I'm discouraged because I felt I was ready to go and the experience I'd get in the next four games would be invaluable to me for next season." Brooks Robinson Hickok Recipient New York MP) Brooks Robinson's sensational play in the World Series earned the Baltimore Orioles' third baseman the October prize by an overwhelming margin in the Hickok Pro Athlete of the Year poll.

In voting, announced Monday, Robinson scored 399 points and received 126 first place votes to overshadow Muhammad Ali's knockout performance over Jerry Quarry. Ali, in action for the first time in years, received eight first place votes and 139 points. Rice Bowl Teams Set Lafayette, La. The University of Southwestern Louisiana accepted Monday a bid to play in the Grantland Rice Bowl in Baton Rouge on Dec. 12.

The Cajuns will face Tennessee State, which has a 9-0 record. Linebacker Jerry Murtaugh's 16 tackles in the Oklahoma game Saturday boosted his season total to 132, 71 of them of the unassisted variety. Defensive statistics: Linemen UT Kansas City Don Pop-plewcll, regarded as Colorado's greatest center since the Buffs started playing football in 1890, was named Monday as the Big Eight Conference lineman of the week. Popplewell was the hub of the Buffaloes' devastating ground name which last Saturday-stacked up 482 yards against lOth-ranked Air Force in a 49-19 win. The Falcons play Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl New Year's Day.

Behind Popplcwell's tremendous blocking, all the Buffs' Ward Walsh and Jon Keyworth had to do was run through the big holes. And Colorado turned it into a no-contcst situation quickly. By halftime, the Buffs were out front 35-7. "The development of our running game has resulted this year from great offensive line play which we have keyed around our center, Don Popplewell," said Colorado coach Eddie Crowder. "He is unquestionably as fine a center as I have observed in my 20 plus years of association with All-Star Football Teams SANDHILLS GATEWAY Elgin Bruce Anderson, Bill Bergstrom, and Reuben Bergman; Humphrey Ron Molczyk and Terry Bender; Petersburg Norm Henn and Raphael Slarman; Cedar Rapid Dan Yikil; Clearwater Rod Burmmels.

Wallik returned a second period kickoff 57 yards, which set in motion a Philadelphia drive that wound up with a 29-yard field goal on the last play of the half. In the third period, Wallik raced 45 yards with a kickoff that started the Eagles to their winning touchdown, scored on a one-yard plunge by Snead 52 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Eagles won on the wings of a fourth period touchdown set in motion by Wallik's 45 yard kickoff return in the late minutes of the third period. Wallik's return put the Eagles on the Giants' 46. Snead passed 31 yards to Hawkins who fumbled, the ball which was recovered for an additional three yards by Philadelphia Jim Scaggs.

Popplewell's selection by a panel of sports writers was not unanimous, however.

Iowa State's great end, Otto Stowe, was the lineman who shared the voting with Popplewell. Ducks Still Plentiful Cold weather and high winds put a damper on most hunting across most of Nebraska over the weekend, but duck hunters continued to do well throughout much of the state. NORTHEAST Hunter pressure on pheasants was generally light, but gunners were doing some good working weed patches. Duck hunting is good at Lewis nd Clark Lake, with the best success from shelter blinds. Officer John Schuckman checked several limits of mallards and rated the Santee area and the Missouri River below Gavins Point Dam as good bets for ducks.

At the west end of Lewis and Clark, Officer Gary Ralston reports that a number of ducks has moved from the reservoir up the river, and hunters are doing well In the Santee-Niobrara area. He observed some 15,000 new ducks in the Santee area. SAND HILLS Good numbers of mallards and geese were sitting on the Missouri River in the Boyd County area, but the cold weather has put an end to duck hunting in Cherry County, where the lakes have frozen over. Some mallards and other ducks are resting on Sherman Reservoir and the Middle Loup River. Pheasants are wild, but success has been qood in Sherman and southern Valley counties.

SOUTHWEST Pheasants are scattered and wild, and pressure was light over the weekend. However, waterfowl hunters can get some action at Enders and Swanson reservoirs. There are some 40,000 ducks and about 1.000 geese on Enders, while Swanson, near Trenton, Is holding from 12.0C0 to 15,000 ducks and about 100 geese. PANHANDLE Pheasant hunters generally averaged about a bird per man over the weekend, and those with dogs were having the best success. However, the ringnecks are wild.

On the waterfowl front, gunners were doing well on both geese and ducks on the east end of Lake Ogallala. Pressure was heavy and success good on geese along the North Platte River from Oshkosh to Lisco. SOUTHEAST Gunners averaged about a pheasant and four quail each in me eastern part of the region over the weekend. Officer Les Johnson reports "plenty of birds" 'n the north-central pari of the area, although hunting pressure was Ugh'. Pheasant hunting was also rated as good in the south-central part of the state.

Officer Fred Salak noted qood success on waterfowl In the Doniphan-Wood River area. Soutar Continues Streak In PBA Detroit ffl Continuing one of the most amazing streaks in the history of professional bowling, Dave Soutar Monday night successfully defended his championship in the $50,000 American AirlinesOpenbowling tournaments. A 10 year veteran of the Professional Bowlers Association tour, Soutar took only five championships in his first nine years in the PBA and now has matched that total in 1970, pushing his earnings to $46,419 and probably gaining recognition as bowler of the year. Don Glover, of Bakersfield, came up with a final game 279-215 victory over Mike McGrath, of El Cerito, to wrest third place, while Butch Gearhart, of Fort Lauderdale, earned the fifth spot. Pecan Bowl Set Kansas City UP) Central Missouri State and Arkansas State accepted invitations Monday to play in the Pecan Bowl football game at Arlington, Dec.
