6D Nov. 7, 1 982 Lincoln, Sunday Journal and Star Reynolds: Rozier as ood if not better, than -75 rr? 1 V' jXL 1 piasfo ir -1 By Randy York Stan Sports Writer "Superlatives aren't Bobby Reynolds' style, but the former Nebraska Ail-American couldn't avoid them Saturday after watching Mike Rozier break his 32-year-old single season rushing record. "He's as good as anybody they're touting for Heisman. lie runs like Herschel if not better," Reynolds said of Rozier, who rushed for 251 yards to break Reynolds' record by 37 yards. The timing could not have been better.

Rozier's record came in Nebraska's ninth game, the same number of games Reynolds used to set his record in 1950. "I've been sitting in the stands, cheering all these years for somebody to break it," Reynolds said. "Thirty-two ypars is a long time, It's amazing somebody didn't break it before." Rozier, admitting he thought I.M. Hipp or Jarvis Redwine "probably held the record" until The Sunday Journal and Star informed him otherwise earlier in the week, said there won't be another 32-year lapse between records. Nebraska running back Mike Rozier rushed for 251 yards against Oklahoma State, including this 26-yard run.

Rozier, a junior, eclipsed Bobby Reynolds' single-season rushing mark of 1 ,342 yards. Scoring How Scored NU-OSU Time Left 4:12 FIRST QUARTER 7-0 Fryar 13 run Drive: 73 yards In 11 plays. Highlighted by 14 pass from Gill to Brown, 5 Rozier carries for 28 yards. Conversion: Selbel kick (established school mark for consecu-tlvt extra points at 57, breaking his own record.) "There's "always someone better than you," Rozier said. "My record won't last as long as his record lasted, believe me.

There are just too many good running backs around now." Barring injury, Rozier is likely to set an unbelievable standard for future record-chasers. If he just maintains his 153-yard average for his final three regular season games against Iowa State, Oklahoma and Hawaii, he will finish the season with 1,838 yards rushing. That would be the sixth best single-season effort in an Ike Jackson pass. I NCAA history behind Southern Cal's Marcus Allen (2,342 in 1981), tltt's Tony Dorsett (1,948 in 76), Geor-, gia's Walker (1,891 in '81), Cornell's EdJktarinaro (1,881 in 71) and Southern Cal's Ricky Bell (1,875 in 75). According to $0 Hancock, Big Eight Service Bureau Director whij watched Satur- day's game from the press box, Rozier will not be penalized in NCAA statistics for playing in the extra game at Hawaii.

Like Dorsett If he duplicates his average and continues his assault, Rozier win slip past the single-season bests of such legendary runners as USC's Charles White, South Carolina's George Rogers, Oklahoma's Billy Sims, Texas' Earl Campbell and USC's O.J.Simpson. Nebraska fullback Mark Moravec is one who would like to see Rozier generate more national attention. "He reminds me so much of Tony Dorsett," Moravec said Saturday. "Like Dorsett, he has such great balance and football sense. He knows when to take off, when to cut and when to really label somebody.

He might even have more power than Dorsett. I've seen a lot of big guys get ready to tackle him and he just turns right into 'em. He gives them a licking before they can give it to him." Rozier appreciates all the endorsements, but it's really not his style. He often wears a T-shirt that says: "I'm a good running back, not a great running back." Team really matters "I bought it in New Jersey," Rozier explained Saturday as he signed several dollar bills thrown in his face by young autograph-seekers. "God gave me a gift.

I'm just trying to use it to the best of my ability," he said. While admitting Saturday's record has increased the attention on him, it hasn't changed him. "I didn't come into this game thinking about any records," he said. "This wasn't Mike Rozier against Ernest Andersoa The media built that up. I knew the real matchup was Nebraska against Oklahoma State.

"The record's nice, but I've been breaking records since I started playing football. The only thing that really matters is that our team came out on top and we're one game closer to getting back to the Orange Bowl." Rozier, wearing a New York Yankee cap while being interviewed by reporters, said "coming from New Jersey, I'm conscious and proud of the fact that I represent Eastern football talent. "But more than that, I represent Nebraska," he said. "I'm proud that Nebraska people have faith in me and want me to break records and all. This is my team."
