"She was a wonderful person," said her husband of more than 47 years, Ronald Thompson. "She liked everybody." Pearl Thompson, 65, of Dyer, died Dec. 9. She wanted Dyer to have a carnival, so for 15 years she helped raise money and served on a committee that sponsored the town's Fourth of July Freedom Fest. "That was her biggest thing," Ronald Thompson said.

Thompson was a charter member of the Dyer Lady Lions. The Lions Club bestowed her with the Citizen of the Year award in 1994, her husband said proudly. Henderson, 79, of Griffith, IN passed away on Thursday, December.31, 2009 in the Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus, Merrillville, IN. James was born July 28, 1930 in Danville, IL to the late Robert and Eula (Harris) Henderson. He married Stella Ross on November 12, 1954 in Griffith, IN. He retired from LTV Steel, formerly Youngstown Steel and Steel, after 40 years. James served in the U.S.

Army. He enjoyed model trains, BINGO with his friends, and in his younger years, fishing and camping. James is survived by his three sons: Richard (Peggy) Henderson, Randy (Lynn) Henderson and Tim Henderson; one sister, Janice (Gary) Yahr; five grandchildren: Justin (Melissa), Tiffany and Katie Henderson and James and Jason Barron; one great granddaughter, Kaylee Henderson and loving friends: Villa Morris and family. James was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Henderson in 1999 and sister, Virginia Umfleet in 2009. Geisen PAULINE A. MAYBERRY GARY, IN January 25, 1931 December 29, 2009 Courage Loyalty Strength Pauline A. Mayberry, age 78 of Gary, IN, passed away on December 29, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in East Chicago, IN to parents Hattie (Kyles) Lampkin and Nathanial Lampkin, Pauline graduated from East Chicago Washington High School and nurses training in Chicago. In her career, Pauline was a nurse, homemaker and caseworker.

Four children survive her: Lawrence Mayberry (Luisa) of CA, Cheryl Bradley (Michael) of MD, Claude Mayberry. III of Gary, and Eric Mayberry (Vikki) of Philadelphia. Pauline was divorced from Dr. Claude Mayberry, JR of Maryland. There will be no public services.

Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Gary, IN. ALLINE McCASLAND (NEE VIAR) FORMERLY OF HOBART, IN Alline McCasland (nee Viar), age 89, formerly a longtime Hobart resident, passed away January 1, 2010 at Pilgram Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth, IN. Alline was preceded in death by her husband, Richard McCasland in 1977 and brother, Sam Viar. Ronald Thompson said his wife was a good dartball player for the parish and very played at churches in Dyer, Highland and Hammond. The game is played using a dartboard that resembles a baseball field.

In the kitchen, her cooking prowess matched her dartball skills. "She was a great cook," her husband said, adding that she made wonderful meals of pigs in a blanket, stuffed peppers and homemade lasagna. In the yard, Thompson had all kind of bird feeders. "It was my job to fill them up, along with our granddaughter Tamara," Ronald Thompson said with a chuckle. Ronald Thompson said his wife "never met anybody she didn't like." JOANNE JURGENS (NEE BEAVERS) SCHERERVILLE, IN Joanne Jurgens (nee Beavers), age 67, of Schererville, IN passed away on Friday, January 1, 2010.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard, three children: Kathy (Ron) Otto of Munster, IN, Karen (Tim) Creighton of Griffith, IN and Richard (Dawn) Jurgens, Jr. of Munster, IN; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Lloyd and Lois Beavers and sister, Jennie Fuller. BARBARA LYNN McCLAIN HOBART, IN Barbara Lynn McClain, age 66, a lifelong resident of Hobart, passed away. She was a graduate of Hobart High School, class of 1962.

Barbara went to be with the Lord on January 2, 2010. Barbara was born on September 2, 1944, the fourth seven children to the union of Fred and Lorrayne (Lantz) McClain. She will be buried next to her brother, George who preceded her in death, as does her parents: Fred and Lorrayne; nephew, Earl and nephew, Cory Lemon. Barbara loved talking on the telephone, reading, sending cards. She loved talking to her friends and relatives: Connie, Joannie, Candice, Marcella, Penny, Billie, Diane, Dorothy and Janice.

Mrs. Miller was born on December 6, 1934 in Hammond, IN the daughter of David Lester and Edna Mae Wheeler Nihiser. She married Buddy Gene Miller on December 20, 1975 in Urbana, IL. He died on September 7, 2000. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Mason of Champaign, IL; two sons: Joe Tilton of Morrow, GA and Edward Tilton Jr.

of Dyer, IN; one step-daughter, Pam Miller of St. Joseph, IL; one step -son, Robert Miller of Urbana, IL; one brother, David Lester Nihiser Jr. of Burnettsville, IN; one sister, Margaret Charlene Larkin of Beaumont, TX and five grandchildren: Kristina Johnson, James Edward Tilton, Mark Allan Tilton, James Ducey and Ashleigh Ducey. Mrs. Miller retired as owner of Miller Appliances Heating and Air Conditioning, was a hostess for the Jolly Rogers for many years and loved to work with public.

She was a member of the Urbana American Legion, loved garage sales, and an avid animal lover. Mrs. Miller was a loving and loyal mother and sister leaving behind many caring nieces and nephews. Joelyn has lived in the Calumet Region for the past 30 years, and she is a member of Cline Avenue Fellowship Church in Highland. Joelyn retired in 2007 from the Community Hospital after 23 years of service as a Certified Nurses Assistant and Registered Phlebotomist in the Oncology Department. Joelyn also worked for a number of years at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in South Holland, IL. She enjoyed camping with her family, attending church and eating ice cream. Joelyn put her heart and soul into all that she did and was a very generous and caring woman, who's contagious laugh, will be missed by all who knew her.
