B-4 THE TIMES Monday, April 6, 1987 MONDAY Times' All-Star Boys' Prep Basketball Team to this showman MIKE HOLOBAWSKI Hanover Central The Wildcats' career leader in scoring assists (314) and steals (173). The Purdue University Calumet bound senior, averoged 25 points and eight rebounds per contest. A three-year starter, his 529 points as a junior was school's best single-season performance. ERIC ANDERSON St. Francis de Sales The two-time All-Catholic Leogue selection averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Pioneers.

The 6-foot-9 junior center is one of the most heavily recruited players In the country, with over 200 schools seeking his services. Anderson, a three-year starter, was named to the Associated Press' All-State squad. r- ii i "Imp, 1 IS HI Hli 4Uuj There's no limit By JOHN O'MALLEY Times Sports Writer GARY At the age of eight, Lew Wallace basketball star Jerome Harmon was in his own words, "a pretty pitiful player." But the Parade and UaA Today All-American has come full circle since, 360 degrees in fact, and slam-dunked his way from grade school hoopster to The McDonald's Ail-American game at the Spectrum in Philadelphia next Sunday. Harmon averaged 29.9 points and 10 re bounds per game for the Hornets (19-3) while shooting 54 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the foul line. The 6-foot-5 Harmon also averaged 2.3 assists per game, made 56 steals, recorded 58 dunks and was a first-team Associated Press All-State selection.

Harmon, a member of The Times' All-Area team a year ago, was an obvious selection for this year's Times' Player of The Year honor. "I pretty surprised that I won because there are a lot of good players in this area," said Harmon, when notified of his selection. "I didn't want to count anybody else out, but I thought I be in the running. The big question in Gary right now is, what college will be the recipient of Haromon's basketball skills? "I've already visited Kentucky, Louisville and Purdue," Harmon said. "I've got visits to Syracuse and UNLV planned the coming weeks.

If I had to make a decision tomorrow I would probably choose Louisville. I like the style of ball they play and it's fairly close to home. "I've ruled out Kentucky because they've already signed four players and I just didn't want to get into a situation where I would have to really fight to play." Besides Diavine in the. McDonald Classic. Harmon has been invited to play in the Kentucky Derby Classic and with the Indiana All-stars this summer.

The 18-year-old Harmon says his ability is God-given, but that he has worked hard to escalate those talents. "I'm a hard worker on the court. My main strengths are my jumping ability, shooting from the outside and taking the ball to the basket," Harmon said. "I worked hard doing toe lifts on the stairs and jumped rope to im prove my jumping ability. "But I need to work on my bail nananng ana learn to rebound and play better defense," Harmon said, got a good start at Lew Wallace when coach (Earl) Smith started me as a freshman.

He gave me the chance to show what I could do and improve myself 'Jerome is by far the most talented player that has come through Gary in the last 17 years, Hornets coacn tan wrutn saw. can think of anyone that had such an impact on the game. 'A testimony to his ability is the fact that everywhere we went this season we attracted big crowds," Smith said. "He's a very coachable kid. He works hard, has a good at titude and works to be at the top of his game.

He's one of the premier players in the country and has reached the pinnacle by being named to the McDonald All-American team." When Harmon isn't playing basketball he participates in track for the Hornets, running the 400-meter dash and is a member of the quarter-mile and mile relay teams.

"Track is good for me and I like it because it helps me in basketball and helps to keep my endurance up," Harmon said. Some of Harmon's other hobbies include cooking, going to movies and socializing with friends. His biggest interest outside of basketball though, is Lew Wallace girls' basketball player, Terrilyn Johnson. "We've been dating for about three years now. She's been a big influence on me and has always encouraged me to do the right things," Harmon said.

"She's just a nice all-around person and her mother (Chrisandra Johnson) also has been very supportive. "When I go away to school I'll miss her and that's one reason why I might stay closer to home," Harmon said; "If I go to UNLV or Syracuse it'll be hard for her to come to a game." Harmon has a realistic outlook when it comes to a professional basketball career. "Sure, I dream of an NBA career and I think most of the kids that have a lot of talent in high school dream of playing in the NBA," said Harmon, who eyes a career in hotel management after college. "If I don't make it in the NBA, I'll just work hard on my books, because if you get a good education you can always get a job." If Harmon keeps improving on his basketball his first job might very well be in the NBA. SPECIAL MENTION Eric Ban, Merrillville 6-1 Sr.
