Await Tourney Track Tank Olympic Events LONDON Aug 7 America's Olympic valiants wrapped up unofficial team championships in two major sections of the games today track and swimming but their victory celebration was dulled by an unhappy incident in the 400 meter relay The stout American dash team Rambling Around the Sports World Elmer Ward will serve Weber College as a line coach in football this fall His acceptance was announced Saturday night by Reed Knute Swenson director of athletics Ward will assist Milton Mecham head coach anchored by Mel Patton of Southern California won the race with some ten yards to spare only to have the triumph nullified by Ward was a football and sports Northern Utah Softball teams will again compete for the region state championship at Affleck Softball park August 16 to 21 inclusive Harold Ambler is the tournament director He will be assisted by Kenneth Graser Harvey Stone Harold Wiese and Joseph Swenson Sixteen teams will compete in a double elimination tournament Awards will go to the champions runner-up and consolation winners All games will be played under the arcs each of the six nights with the first four nights needed to complete the first two rounds and bring the team entries down to a workable number to complete the title contests Saturday evening Both the 1946 winner Anderson Motor of Brigham City and the 1947 champs Bank Smokery will be back for another crack at the crown Bank Smokery teammates are playing under the colors of the Kammeyer's Sporting Goods store and as Metropolitan league leaders will be the team to beat Strong challengers from Logan Fashion Cleaners and Grant's Bike have signified their intention to take part in the meet The Cleaners with a lineup of Aggie athletic greats headed by two sterling moundmen Ralph Maughan and Marv Abrams look like the outstanding threat from out of the city Naval Supply Davis News Ambler's American Legion Utah General Depot and Sam Kapp Plastering will represent the fast local Metropolitan loop while both Ogden Business College-and Globe Mills top Industrial league clubs have indicated that their presence in the meet will be for more than just the purpose of filling out the entry list with some great ball in recent league games Several local church league teams from the Protestant and leagues will bid for the many team and individual awards All teams as not yet Cam Harmon of Brigham City speeding at nearly a mile a minue clip over the water Harmon is nationally known and will be a serious contender- star at Box Elder high school graduating in 1931 He made the all-state team as a center and halfback He captained the Bees his senior year He captained the Utah State freshman team and was the pilot of the Farmers his senior year He played three years of intercollegiate football and was rated All-American in 1934 He was chosen on the first NEA All-American team as a center Ward starred for the Detroit Lions in professional football in 1935 and 1936 The Lions won the pro title in 1936 with Ward at center When World War started Ward was summoned to duty as a first lieutenant quartermaster corps During the war Elmer Ward served in important posts as senior instructor at A storage school Camp Lee Virginia At Washington he served as chief in the storage and management section for two years He was awarded the legion of merit for his services in Washington For outstanding services at Utah A depot he received the commendation award He graduated from command staff school in 1943 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel a year later Ward is currently a civilian official at Utah general distribution depot The former All-American is sure to help the Wildcats in the new football campaign Ogden high and Box Elder Bees will tangle at Brigham City in a pre-season football game the night of Sept 10 This will be one of the features of the annual Peach days' celebration Ogden and Box Elder look like strong contenders in the class A race this fall The Peach days football game will be played for the first time and undoubtedly will become an annual attraction When the American Olympic boxing team goes into action at London on Monday the heavyweight contender Jay Lambert of West Jordan Utah will carry the best wishes of one of the greatest heavyweights of all time Jack Dempsey Dempsey thinks highly of Lambert The former champion of the world chinned with this corner over long distance telephone for 20 minutes last Friday anent Lambert The chap who once fought a double header at the old Manhattan club in Salt Lake for a cool $5 says maybe Lambert is the chap to ascend the heavyweight throne Dempsey cabled Lambert best wishes for victory and invited him to be his guest for a few days in New York City late in August The 1948 golf schedule at the Ogden Golf and Country club is fast running out Upwards of 100 golfers will take part in the Sunday morning breakfast event today On Aug 8 and 15 players of the club will qualify for the Ernie Schneiter tournament The club sweepstakes is scheduled Aug 21-22 On September 4-5 members will qualify for the annual club championship First round matches will be played Sept 6 Grand finals of the president's and director's cup events is tabbed for Sept 19 The final Sunday morning breakfast tournament is carded Sept 29 On Oct 2 the annual Red-Blue event is scheduled this is the final event of what County club members tell the world the finest season in history Committeemen to handle the annual appreciation night program of the Ogden Reds will be named in a few days The night will be chosen and other arrangements completed It is hoped to raise a fancy sum of money for each of the players and Manager Bobby Mattick Fishermen running across small fawns in the timberlands should leave them alone unless they are in obvious danger according to the Utah fish and game department Many cases have been reported a department spokesman said where small deer have been found believed to be abandoned and taken home for nursing In most cases the mother has been scared away and is watching her fawn all the time and would return to it It is better to have one in a Ogden Legion Opens With Brigham Nine SALT LAKE CITY Aug 7 (AP) Four teams will be in quest of the Utah state American Legion junior baseball title in a championship series at Brigham Utah Thursday through Saturday Pairings for the state event were announced today by Legion officials The winner will represent Utah in the regional tournament set for August 22 to 25 in Salt Lake City Ficst game pairings on Thursday will pit Cyprus against East Carbon and Ogden against Brigham The series will run each night in double elimination play Contenders for the state title are district winners Twenty-four teams entered play when competition began last June Winners from eight districts met last week to limit the field to four Glen Ballinger Helper American Legion athletic chairman said more than 100 baseball teams were under legion sponsorship this summer However only 24 met standards as outlined by the national Legion "Junior baseball has been given a decided lift this year with greater spectator interest shown and more efficiently organized series play among the teams" Ballinger pointed out The Utah winner will pit its baseball skill against four other entries in the regional affair at Derks field Four states Arizona Colorado Nevada and Utah and the Hawaiian islands will be represented Mayor Lorenzo Bott will welcome the visiting teams in a pre-game ceremony next Thursday
