THE TIMES Tuesday, December 24, 1174 2J Calumet Region Obituaries Tri-Creek Superintendent Resigns; Action Deferred Vf 1 WSml By ALENE HENKE Timet Correspondent SCHNEIim-Action on the resignation of acting School Superintendent Wil-ford Ogle was deferred Monday night by the Tri-Creek School trustees. Ogle submitted his resignation Monday night. It will be effective upon offi-rial receipt from the state department of public' instruction of notice that he can no longer function as superintendent. Ogle's resignation was brought about by a directive from the teacher training licensing and certification division of the State Board of Public Instruction. Ogle is five courses short of having proper edification, which has never been denied by Ogle or members of the board.

A motion to accept Ogle's resignation was rescinded at the request of community representatives who urged investigation of alternatives. Trustees will confer with state officials Friday in an effort to solve existing and future problems. Mrs. John Keithley told the board, "Another superintendent cannot walk in an fulfill the position as well." She commented on special education programs Ogle has helped to plan and says be has the backing of other superintendents. Glenn Dering, president of the Lowell National Bank, said the financial condition of the school corporation has im-" proved under Ogle's guidance.

The corporation was approximatelv ersity Extension next semester. It would take approximately nine months for him to obtain certification. Ogle would be attending night school and summer programs. Trustees have been given until Feb. 1 to find a replacement for Ogle.

Board President John Bryant Jr. said meetings were held with representatives of the State Board of Public Instruction in July. It looked at that time like Ogle would be able to continue and things would be worked out, he said. Ogle said when he assumed his position as superintendent the school district was in a period of transition, the system divided and financial problems existed. He said he was the only administrator in the central office at that time and that because of the problems he had no time to attend classes for his own educational furtherance.

Ogle said the state is not concerned with how well a superintendent performs his duty but just the fact that he is licensed. Those attending the meeting held in the Schneider town hall expressed confidence in the board and in Ogle. The school district was evaluated two years ago by the certification commission for schools and buildings and was given a Class A rating. The major question being asked by corporation residents is "why or how could the school district receive such a high rating two years ago under Ogle's leadership and suddenly, almost without warning, be told to obtain a new superintendent?" Displeasure was expressed at the state assuming local control. Tri-Creek will again be evaluated in April or May.

In Ogle's resignation he said "There has been many alternatives discussed as to what could be done to fulfill the regulation of certification, but nearly all are filled with pitfalls for Tri-Creek." "Any system," he said, "that will cause disruption, a vacuum to exist for a long period, or generally negative atmosphere to develop in the school corporation should be rejected." Ogle said his request for the time extension to obtain his certification would have prevented these problems. He praised the administrative team in the school system and personnel who in their own way contributed to the orderly and efficient functioning of the school system. "No man can operate a school system without people who are responsible administrators," he said. Merrillville Names Commission Members WILFORD OGLE backing $500,000 in the red when Ogle assumed his duties as superintendent a little more than four years ago. The school board applied for a waiver of rule on certification which would have permitted Ogle to take the additional courses required for certification.

The move was turned down by state officials. Ogle has enrolled at the Indiana Univ- truck to be used by the park department was awarded to Art Hill Ford in Merrillville. 1 Two policemen were hired at base salaries of $9,600 beginning immediately for patrolman Alex Christoff and as soon as federal monies arrive for patrolman Robert Bucsar. Braddach also left a vacant seat on the board of zoning appeals which will be filled by plan commissioner Thomas Thompson for one year. John Sangaras will replace James Thomas on the BZA for a four year term. Town trustees John Collins and Ralph Long were re-appointed to the plan commission for another term.

Bob Dieter was appointed to a three year term on the police commission. Board President Ronald Randhan appointed himself to the seat vacated by Wilkerson on the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission. In other business: Town engineer James Gianinni was awarded a $13,150 contract to do the town master storm drainage plan. LYNWOOD After a man was removed from being pinned under his car, a squabble began over who should tow away the car.

Wayne D. Raker, 24, of 418 S. East Crown Point, was trapped beneath his car at 4:18 a.m. today when it went into a ditch and overturned one half mile south of the Chicago-Hammond Airport. Lynwood police, who would normally handle the area, have an agreement with Cook County Sheriff's Police to get assistance after 5 p.m.

The sheriff's department called the Lansing Police Department, asking for their assistance. The county said it would take them 20 minutes to reach the accident scene. Lansing police arrived at 4:21 a.m. and found Raker under his car. They radioed back to request the Lansing Fire Department rescue unit.

According to the Lansing police report, police feared the car might tip over and rupture its gas tank. At 4:25 a.m., both Lansing and Lynwood fire units arrived. Raker was removed from beneath the car and sent to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital. He is in serious condition in the intensive care ward. After Raker was removed, according to 'Lansing police, Lansing Fire Chief Ralph Schauer requested a tow truck remove the car.

The truck was called by Lansing units. Schauer, according io the report, wanted to remove the danger of the car tipping and wanted to check the possibility of someone else being under the car. Men Rob City Store HAMMOND-Two men robbed the Saxon Paint and Home Care Center, three of its employes and a customer Monday. According to police, the pair entered the store at 7140 Indianapolis Blvd. about 9:30 p.m.

One was armed with a shotgun. Police said the employes, David Brynes, 17; Jeffery Wilson, 19, and Joel Wilkinson, 18, and customer Edward Wise, 44, were forced into the back room. The robbers took the money from the cash register and forced one employe to open the safe and yield the money. They also took the wallets of the four. The loot totaled $1,920, police said.

Police said a. lookout man stood in front of the store during the robbery, but left another direction after the Cook County Deputy Sheriff David Fisher warned Schauer the county would take no part in handling official reports of the accident if Lansing took the car, Lansing investigators said. County regulations require either the car owner or the county to take possession of a car and, have it towed before the county would accept responsibility in reports and Schauer, according to the police, said he felt searching for another possible victim was more important than who took possession of the car.
