B-6 THE TIMES Friday, June 15, 1984 HOLLYWOOD HOTLINE Carter leads final concert at GSU Streisand honored by filmmakers DANNY DeVITO makes his directorial debut with "The Ratings Game," a TV movie for Showtime, the pay-TV service, and among the cast is RHEA PERLMAN, DeVito's wife and one of the stars of "Cheers." JOHNNY CASH has been signed by CBS to star in a TV movie based on "The Baron," his song about a pool player. He's also planning to supply the network with another Christmas special. UNIVERSITY PARK -Warrick Carter will conduct his final concert at Governors State University. After 13 years as jazz music instructor at GSU, Carter is leaving to become dean of the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The free concert will be at 7:30 p.m.

June 21 at the university, Stuenkel Road, east of Governors Highway. Former members of GSU jazz ensembles and combos will pay tribute to Carter during the concert. Carter came to GSU in 1971 as coordinator of the division of fine and performing arts and professor of music. When KIRK DOUGLAS works these days, it seems as though he's eager to make it a family affair, or at least find some togetherness with his sons. Kirk and son MICHAEL DOUGLAS are talking about doing a feature together, with Michael hot after the success of "Romancing the Stone." The duo says the right vehicle for them would be "something that has some bite to it, violent" First, father Kirk will be working with son PETER on "Amos," a TV movie for CBS.

Peter portrayed his father as a young man in an NBC movie a few seasons back. This time, they'll be in scenes together. Kirk has starred in many westerns in his career, and for that work he has just received the Wrangler Award, given by the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. He says his two favorite westerns are "Lonely Are the Brave" and "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral." He may have to amend that.

On HBO this July, subscribers will get to see Kirk in "Draw," a made-for-Dav-TV movie in whiVh The writers of "Police Academy" will next set their lampooning sights on Capitol Hill, more specifically, on the pages Warrick Carter Barbra Streisand By GEORGE CHRISTY Copley News Service HOLLYWOOD "Yes, making 'Yentl' was a struggle, but then life is a struggle. There are no free lunches," BARBRA STREISAND admitted before 1,700 guests during the Women In Film's Crystal Awards luncheon at the Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles. Barbra was an honoree, as were MARY TYLER MOORE and cin-ematographer BRIANNE MURPHY. "Yentl," she pointed out, was over-budget by 11 percent, but has earned four times its cost back, although it was turned down by every major studio. "It's a movie that'll appeal only to L.A.

and New York, some of the studio executives told me, and yet our weakest audience came from New York. We had incredible success in Toronto and Taiwan, and broke every record in Finland." In introducing Barbra, lyricist MARILYN BERGMAN recalled a first meeting with her. It was between Barbra 's matinee and evening performance in 1962 of "I Can Get It For You Wholesale." Fledgling actress Barbra had had "the guts to say no" to a project composer JULE STYNE wanted her to do. "That's great for CAROL BURNETT," Barbra shrugged, not knowing it had been offered initially to Carol, who turned it down. And then Barbra proceeded to outline a musical that would be right for her, and it had the glimmerings of "Funny Girl.

MICHAEL LANDON introduced cinematographer BRIANNE MURPHY, who he had hired to shoot "Little House on the Prairie," and he noted, "Brianne makes it a joy to go to work in the SCHCCNERS 167th and HALSTED HARVEY, IL 331-0094 For Reservations millff running IQT yjg senators and congressmen. Incidentally, a "Police Academy" sequel is already planned. Those who love "Leave It to Beaver" will be happy to know that the Disney Channel will be doing a series based on that popular offering of yesteryear. The new series will pick up where the telefeature, "Return of the Beaver" left off. JERRY MATHERS, as the Beaver, is divorced and living with his mother, June (BARBARA BILL-INGSLEY), and two sons.

Wally (TONY DOW) is married, and Eddie Haskell (KEN OSMOND) has some shady construction deals. LIONEL RICHIE will tape his first network variety special, for morning. Brianne then discussed the "unique attitudes" (a.k.a. discrimination) that existed when she first started working as a cinematographer. Asking a studio guard for the camera department, she was admonished, "You go to makeup first, honey, before camera." She advised Women In Film members "to be patient and to remember that you cannot be liberated unless you're captured." Unable to attend since she was filming "Heartsounds" in Toronto, MARY TYLER MOORE received WIF's Crystal Award from screenwriter FAY KANIN in a Technicolor film cup that was photographed on location in Canada.

Fay said with a wink that Mary's may be the most expensive Crystal Award presentation in history, considering the cost of not only the film clip but interrupting the "Heartsounds" production to shoot it. At an age when most gunfighters have hung up their belts, Kirk's character is in trouble again, and it is up to JAMES COBURN, an over-the-hill lawman, to track him down. A contemporary of Kirk Douglas who appeared with him in "Spartacus" says he's feeling fit and is ready to work again. TONY CURTIS spent time in a hospital recovering from an addiction to pills, he says.

Now he explains, "I'm getting my life together and feeling the excitement." next season. CBS also has BARRY MANILOW and SHIRLEY MacLAINE inked. There's also talk that CBS wants MacLaine for a dramatic series. MUNSTER 924-6630 "Buddenbrooks" is the nine-part adaptation of the Thomas Mann novel that begins on public television June 18 as part of the Great Performances series. It's slow, it's long, it's difficult and it's annoyingly dubbed in English. But it's ultimately gripping and very moving. The series is about the Buddenbrook family who are prosperous grain merchants and follows their rising fortunes and eventual disintegration through four generations that span the mid-19th century. In stately, leisurely fashion, the book chronicles a succession of family gatherings at housewarmings, dinner parties, weddings, births and funerals.
