USC's defense checked California, 1-5 overall and 11 in league play, until the Trojans led 21-0 in the third quarter before 56,488 in Memorial Coliseum. Cunningham's second touchdown dive from one yard out gave USC its three touchdown halftime lead but the proceeding play may prove to be costly to the Trojans.

Flanker Lynn Swann broke off a 42-yard run to set up the TD but left the game with an injury to his knee. The extent of injury was not known. Rae, who ran 10 yards through left tackle for USC's second touchdown, answered Cal's first score with an eight yard run for a 28-8 USC lead. Oct. 15,1972 Journal-News, Hamilton, Ohio 62-0 Nebraska BY DENNE FREEMAN Associated Press Sports Writer DALLAS (AP) Oklahoma defensive tackle Derland Moore blocked a Texas quick kick in the third period for a crucial touchdown and ran down a Longhorn fumble for another score Saturday to spark the second-ranked Sooners to a 27-0 victory over the 10th- ranked Longhorns. Until Moore's third quarter play, the Sooners held a shaky 3-0 lead on a 37- yard field goal by Rick Fulcher. Texas quarterback Alan Lowry dropped back to punt on third down from his own 15-yard line and Moore roared in untouched.

Guard Lucious Selmon flopped on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Oklahoma's Gary Baccus batted a Texas pitchout into the end zone and Moore fell on the ball for another six points. It was Moore's blocked kick that sapped the life from the Longhorns, who had held Oklahoma to only five first downs in the first half. Oklahoma All-America halfback Greg Pruitt buzzed around left end for a five- yard fourth quarter touchdown run after Joe Wylie had returned a punt 44 yards. Oklahoma's defense was superb in being the first team to shut out the Longhorns since 1963 over a period of 100 games.

The Sooners intercepted four Longhorn passes and recovered four fumbles. Oklahoma has yet to allow a touchdown this season. Oklahoma, which led the nation in total offense with 621 yards per game, was held to only 273 yards by the Texas defense. Pruitt gained 81 yards in 11 carries. Oklahoma allowed Texas only 73 yards on the ground as it shut down the Longhorn Wishbone.

Texas gained 186 yards through the air. Oklahoma had gone into the game as the nation's top scoring outfit with an average of 56.3 points per contest. Strock's game-winning kick came after the Kansas State upsets Kansas, 20-10 By ROBERT MOORE Associated Press Sports Writer MANHATTAN, Kan. AP) Underdog Kansas State whipped bitter rival Kansas and a frisky wind 20-10 Saturday on Jim Cunningham's last-ditch tackle that prevented Jayhawk quarterback Dave Jaynes from making a two-point conversion in a Big Eight football game. Kansas rolled 55 yards late in the third quarter, Jaynes hitting Bruce Adams on a 38-yard touchdown pass to leave the Jay hawks only one point shy of the host Wildcats. Electing to try to win rather than tie, Jaynes rolled around left end and was just ready to step into the end zone as Cunningham cut him down just inches short.

Jaynes then left the game with a damaged shoulder. A spotting Kansas State a 14-0 first-quarter I lead, Jaynes rallied the Jayhawks for two straight touchdowns on a 34-yard pass to Adams and a three- yarder to John Schroll. Kansas State had elected I to receive at the game's start in order to travel with the wind. The decision paid off. The Wildcats scored the first two times they had the I ball.

Kansas State marched 55 yards on six plays with 1 Isaac Jackson running 18 yards for the first touchdown, then drove 36 yards on three plays, with Bill Holman catching Dennis Morrison's 31-yard end zone strike. Kansas State's ability to make one sustained march of 64 yards against the wind proved the difference.
