That, Denny said later, was almost as historic a kick as it was timely. "That's the first field goal Central's kicked in the last dec-ade," he contended "We've been working on them a lot this year, and Mittan just got a super kick, It was right down the middle." The Bulldogs' final touchdown came with 28 seconds remaining when Fewell, who'd carried an earlier option pitch 32 yards to the Hillcrest 22, scored from the 1. That gave him 110 yards for the game, all but 17 of them in the second half. "Our offensive line played weU," Denny said, accounting for FeweU's total and the 213 yards rushing the Bulldogs accumulated as a team. "They just blocked folks.

Anytime you control the line of scrimmage, you're going to have some scoring." It was the ability of the Central defense to control the other line of scrimmage that caught Banasik's eye, however. That played havoc with Hillcrest's option offense. "It hurt a lot," Banasik said. "The option is our bread and butter, and they just took it away from us. We couldn't go outside, and they started making us go inside." The Hornets' two lone scoring threats of note both ended when fourth-down runs came up short.

Late in the first half, Hillcrest used a 17-yard run by Tim Bade and an accompanying 15-yard faeemask penalty to make it to the Central 29, but Taylor was chased from the pocket on fourth down and run out of bounds 4 yards shy of a first down. On their first possession of the second half, the Hornets marched to the Central 35, this time stalling when Bade was stopped for no gain on third-and-1 and fourth-and-1 dives into the line. "That was the turning point of the game, as far as we were concerned," Banasik said of the third-quarter failure. "Our kids had come out juiced up. We thought if we'd gone in and scored there, it would have picked us up a little bit, but we couldn't convert." "It was big," Denny agreed.

"But we felt out defense has been playing well all year. That was typical." George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the New York Yankees, said Thursday that Bob Lemon can have the managerial job again next season if he wants it.
