"They were well prepared and came through shorthanded," Atlanta coach Mike Fratello said, alluding to the absence of Cummings. L.A. Lakers 113 Seattle 102 INGLEWOOD, Calif. -Magic Johnson scored nine of his 21 points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter Sunday, leading the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers to victory in the opener of their Western Conference semifinal series.

James Worthy had 28 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who didn't go ahead for goooV until a jump shot by Johnson with 9:51 remaining gave them an 88-87 lead, starting a 16-4 spurt that made it 102-91 with 4:34 to go. "I just have to praise our players for the courage it took to continue to overcome one obstacle after another." "We controlled the tempo," Pierce said.

"A lot of people were counting us out" Mokeski, who had 11 points and six rebounds, twice gave Milwaukee the lead on layups in the final 3:30, the last with 2:51 to play, putting the Bucks ahead to stay 87-86. Fred Roberts hit two free throws 30 seconds later, Pierce hit an 18-footer and Humphries scored on a breakaway layup, stretching the lead to 93-86. Atlanta countered with a 3-pointer by Glenn Rivers, but Humphries hit two more free throws with 53 seconds left for a 95-89 lead. MosesMalone, who led the Hawks with 25 points and 16 rebounds, got Atlanta within three points with a 3-point field goal, but Humphries then hit one of two free throws with eight By The Associated Press ATLANTA Coach Del Harris had vowed his Milwaukee Bucks would win one playoff game in Atlanta. He didn't stretch that vow to two games, but that's exactly what the Bucks did Sunday, overcoming the loss to injury of leading scorer Terry Cummings and beating the Hawks 96-92 to win their best-of-5 first-round NBA playoff series 3-2.

"We knew we could win, but I didn't know if we would," Harris said after steering his team into an Eastern Conference semifinal best-of-7 series against the Detroit Pistons, one of the league's top powers, but one that the Bucks held a 4-2 edge over during the regular season. Ricky Pierce came off the bench and led the Bucks with 25 points, while Paul Mokeski and Jay Humphries hit key baskets down the stretch in eliminating the favored Hawks. There were plenty of reasons for the losses, according to the SSC coach. "Our guys didn't hit today (Sunday) when we needed it," he said. Also, "defensively, it was a big disappointment." The day started well for the Bulldogs, as Bob Jaroscak's three-run homer to center staked Yogi Postell to a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Kankakee. But things went downhill after that. Eric Long was stranded at third after a leadoff triple in the third, and SSC committed four errors in the fourth' and fifth innings, allowing Kankakee to score six times.

The Bulldogs never recovered. Long went 2-for-4, while Jaroscak finished with four RBI. 4 Tall Tel. Hawks' Jon Konchak swats away pass College baseball SSC's year By MIKE CLARK Times Sports Writer SOUTH HOLLAND A day after playing one of its best games of the year, South Suburban College watched its baseball season come to an abrupt end. The Bulldogs were out-hit 25-12 and committed six errors in falling 7-5 to Kankakee and 11-3 in eight innings to DuPage Sunday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Section III playoffs. South Suburban, which had won sectional titles the past two years, finished 25-24. Kankakee (24-17) met DuPage (30-26) this morning needing one win in two games to advance to Region IV play on its own diamond next weekend.

DuPage needed to sweep two games to keep its season alive. South Suburban's play Sunday baffled coach Steve Ruzich, whose team played flawless defense in a 4-0 win over DuPage on Saturday. "You play so well one day and Pro hockey Montreal's PHILADELPHIA (AP) The combination of Patrick Roy's stingy goaltending and Montreal's swarming defense is strangling the Philadelphia Flyers. The Canadiens checked the Flyers to a standstill and Roy stopped 17 shots for his second shutout in three games as Montreal moved within one victory of the Stanley Cup finals with a 3-0 victory in Game 4 of the Wales Conference finals Sunday night. Roy said the shutout, his third in playoff competition, was a team effort.

"If I don't make the saves, there is no shutout. If they don't make the plays in front of me, there is no shutout," he said. "Our concentration is at a high level now. We're confident. I think the Flyers worked hard before we got the big goal." The "big goal" was the Shayne Corson's game-opening tally at 10:09 of the second period, triggering a three-goal outburst in a Gold-.
