Monday, March I Page 3B Music industry celebration marks record-breaking strides in 100 years By LEON ETHRIDGE Syndicated Columnist This year, we celebrate 100 years of recorded sound. In salute, we thought it would be of interest to show the progress that has been made in creating a recording. Picture a typical recording session some 90 years ago: A singer stands facing the large end of a recording horn. Bunched behind the artist are the musicians. On cue, a studio attendant starts up the cylinder recorder, announces the title of the recording, and the singer and orchestra go into their performance.

At its conclusion, another cylinder is placed on the recording machine, the title announced, the performance repeated. Every cylinder record in those days required a separate performance because there was no way then of mass- duplicating cylinders. In time, it was found that up to three cylinder recor- ders could be run simultaneously to record a singer, up to 10 for a brass band. But performers still had to repeat the selection over and over again to produce the required number of cylinders. Each performance was called a "round," and artists were paid S5 per round.

The use and positioning of instruments was critical, so one would not drown out the other or the singer. Low- pitched string instruments could not be used becuase the cylinders could not pick up low-frequency string sounds. Singers had to move back and forth during a performance to create an illusion of dynamic shading. The human voice reproduced with greater fidelity than the orchestral background. A few years later, the development of the disc record made it possible for the first time to mass- duplicate recordings from a wax master.

These records suffered the same as the awards LOS ANGELES (AP) The screenwriters of "Network" and "All The President's Men" have won top honors in the annual Writers Guild Awards. Both films also are up for a number of Oscars, to be presented Monday at the annual Academy Awards. Bill Goldman, who wrote the screenplay for "President's and Paddy Chayefsky, who wrote "Network," received their awards last week at the Writers Guild ceremony attended fay about 1,200 persons. Also winning top awards were Bill Lancaster, who wrote the screenplay for "The Bad News Bears," and William Waldman and Blake Edwards, who wrote "The Pink Panther Strikes Again." Winners for television included the 14 writers who collaborated on "Saturday Night with Buck Henry," Alan Alda for "Dear Sigmund," Robert Collins for "The Quality of Mercy," and Steward Stern for "Sybil." LONDON (AP) The American film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" swept four major 1978 British Academy Awards -best film, best direction, best actor and best actress. In a star-studded London ceremony last week, Princess Anne presented the four awards, along with two more for best supporting actor and best film editing for the same movie.

The awards are the British equivalent of the American Oscars. It was not until 1925, when electrical recording came into use, that the audio spectrum was extended upward, permitting reproduction of orchestral sounds with a reasonable degree of fidelity. Great fidelity was achieved through the placement of microphones and the design of acoustics in the studio.

Up until the late 1940s, the three- or four-minute performance on one side of the 78 rpm shellac disc record had to be done perfectly in one take. Any mistake, and the whole thing had to be done over again. The advent of tape as a recording medium after World War II changed all this. Now. if a note is played wrong, or someone is off- key, only that bar of music has to be redone and the corrected version spliced into the tape.

A typical recording studio today can record from 16 to 24 separate channels of sound on a tape. The editing and mixing that takes place after a recording session is an important contribution to the finished product. The producer of a recording functions somewhat like the director of a motion picture. He supervises the session and is in charge of every facet of the recording from the start to the finished product. Equally important to a finished recording is the engineer.

He can be as important in creating the final recording as the artist himself. The recording industry has come a long way, and I'm sure we will continue to see great things in the future.
