Greene County, Missouri; thence East 440.4 feet; thence North 732 feet; thence West 440.4 feet; thence Drive, driving gets Middleton to tourney By Warren Mayes The News-Leader ST. JOSEPH Doug Middleton doesn't like driving that much but this weekend, he'll make an exception. Middleton, who pitches for Magic Country Beef, also plays football for the Central Missouri State University Mules, who began practice last Tuesday.

For the first time since Middleton began playing football, he received permission to attend the 50th annual Men's Major State Fast Pitch Softball Tournament. "I just told our (new) coach (Terry Nolan) we play all summer for the state tournament," said Middleton, who pitched the Beef to a 7-0 victory over the Southwest Jays of West Plains Friday morning. "I told him this is what it's all about," he added. "Since I'm a senior, he agreed to let me off some practices. I never asked (former Coach Al) Molde because I was an underclassmen and I didn't think it was right." However, Middleton, a defensive end, couldn't miss this morning's scrimmage in Warrensburg.

As a result, he awoke early to make the drive. He'll return here for the Beefs night game. "I really don't like driving that much," Middleton said. "It's kinda bad in one way. My mind's strictly not on football.

But I'm not strictly here to concentrate on softball. "Coach said he wanted me for the scrimmage," he added. "But this is something I'll make an exception for. This is the state tournament, my first one. I'm excited to be here." Middleton is acknowledged as one of the best young players in the game by many softball observers.

"I think he's the best young man playing in these parts," said team first base coach and sponsor Everett Payne. "We need him here. He makes the difference. We're already a game ahead of last year." In the Beefs opening game last year, Harold's of Lexington shaded Magic Country, 1-0, despite a two-hitter by Tim Buff. Friday, Middleton, who pitched in 100-degree temperatures, threw a one hitter and shut out the Jays.

Middleton has had a successful summer hitting and pitching. He hit a Triple A league-leading .520. "You want to win a tournament like the Heart of the Ozarks but this is one where you want to win every game," Middleton added. "If you lose, it's your season." Middleton has a couple of goals. "I want us to finish one or two in this tournament (those teams advance to the regional) and win our conference in football," he said.

"That would really be nice." And, worth the driving.
