Carson officials said the lightning bolt struck as the trainees in a heavy mortar company of the 47th Infantry, Regiment were returning to the company area from the trainee processing center. The bolt hit the fourth of four platoons- as the men were marching down one of the avenues near the heart of the fort. The men In the company were wearing plastic helmet liners, but not field helmets. They were not carrying rifles.

The lightning struck during a brief electrical storm.
