Another man discussed the murder of Given, the slaying of Henry (Babe) Lopez, former park superintendent, and the death of City Clerk George Lamb. "I never believed Lamb committed suicide," he said. Lamb had been indicted by a federal grand jury before he died in his apartment from a bullet wound. The death was ruled a suicide.

Lopez's body was found inside his car when it was pulled from the Grand Calumet River in January 1981. He had been shot In the back of the head. His vehicles, including several cars and an old van, were not significant. The 23 witnesses appearing Saturday were present at the fundraiser. Crawford said one witness did not show up but had a valid reason.

Police officers who participated were Pat Kelly, Ron Jackson, Benito Baiza, Dan Belzeski, Andy Callas and Robert Ziller. Deputy Police Chief John Cardona was not subpoened for the grand jury session. Cardona has been mentioned as a suspect. He has denied any involvement. Fireman Mark Warholic was called for the session.

Warholic earlier told police he saw Given talking with a dark-haired man shortly before he was shot. Warholic said he couldn't identify the man but knew it wasn't Cardona. murder has not been solved. A woman talked about a pile of cigarette butts found in the club vestibule where it is believed Given's murderer waited about 45 minutes for him to leave a fundraiser for Lake County Commissioner N. Atterson Spann, Jr.

And like the two men, the woman didn't want anyone to know she had talked to a reporter. Asked their names, they smiled knowingly, and replied "just a citizen. No one talks in East Chicago. It's not safe to tell what you know." Given, 51, was a powerful polticial figure. He was shot once in the back of the head.

Before his slaying, he had been Involved in a political fight with a faction of the city council. Crawford declined to release names of private citizens participating in the crime re-Inactment.
