Deal Schererville cop to ride bike to D.C. Marrero removed from county ballot by the tour is given to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington. Uzubell is an avid cyclist who participated in the 2001 World Police and Fire Games in Indianapolis. Uzubell competed in the bicycle marathon, finishing in 14th place. He also competed in the ice hockey competition.

Uzubell said he started cycling a few years ago and recently heard about the Unity Tour. h. "I thought it would be a good adventure," he said. Uzubell will not be the only Schererville connection to the event, which coincides with National Police Week. Schererville's first police chief will be honored when his name is etched into the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on May 13.

Pete Redar, who was first hired as a marshal in July 1927, died of his injuries from an August 1964 car crash. Since Redar's death, the topic of whether he was killed in the line of duty has been debated. The memorial only-honors those who were killed while working. Redar was driving his Model A Ford when his car collided with a tractor-trailer on U.S. 41, which was slick from rain.

Redar died of his injuries two weeks later. The company has told the city it would bring 300 light industrial jobs to the city, with a payroll of $12 million, or $40,000 per job, on average. Plus, Gordon has agreed to give first priority for jobs to qualified Crown' Point residents, purchase goods and services from competitive city businesses and use qualified Northwest Indiana contractors and trade organizations to construct the center. Metros said he hopes Gordon's development would draw like businesses to Crown Point, which three years ago drew up a master plan that includes corporate development, distribution warehousing, light industry and retail areas along the 231 corridor. Though the agreement is finalized Gordon already has signed off on the plan the city cannot say for sure when construction will begin.

And Gordon and the city always have the option to back out of the deal at any time. If and when construction does begin, however, it will be at least 3-12 years, through design and permitting phases, construction and equipment installation and inventory stocking, before the center opens. Metros said the time will be well spent. "Hopefully, Gordon Foods is the first of many," the mayor said. "This is the beginning of a new era for Crown Point.

This is something we can all be proud of because this pays the bills. I think the community will reap the rewards of this for many, many, many years after we are gone." BY MARK KIESLING Times Staff Writer INDIANAPOLIS -An Indiana Court of Appeals on Thursday removed 1st District Lake County Commissioner candidate Epifanio "Eppie" Marrero from Tuesday's primary election ballot, forcing voting mechanics to work overtime to alter machines being sent out into the district. On March 8, incumbent Commissioner Rudolph Clay, D-Gary, challenged Marrero's Lake County residency.

The county's Board of Election and Registration agreed with Clay and removed Marrero from the ballot. After Marrero appealed, Lake Circuit Court Judge George Ivancevich overturned the board's decision and reinstated him. Clay and the board then appealed that decision to the Indiana Court of Appeals. In making its decision, the appellate panel said Clay had presented convincing evidence that Marrero did not live in Gary, as he claimed, but in Porter County. They cited mail delivery and utility bills as "substantial evidence." Although voting machines have been distributed throughout the county's 2nd and 3rd commissioner districts, they were held back from the 1st Dis trict in anticipation of a ruling, said board attorney Justin Murphy.

Voting machine mechanics worked overtime Thursday night to paste over Marrero's name and disable the punch button alongside the name, and the machines will begin going out on Friday. More problematic is the possibility absentee ballots were cast for Marrero and are now not valid, Murphy said. He said voters who feel their ballots may be invalidated have two options: Either vote in person at their polling place, thereby negating the absentee ballot; or obtain a form ABS-5 from the courthouses in Hammond, 232 Russell Gary, 15 W. 4th or Crown Point, 2293 N. Main on Friday, Saturday and Monday from 8:30 a.m.

to 4 p.m. Murphy said he was delighted the appeals court found the decision of the board to have been based on the evidence and in accord with the law, and said the court found Ivancevich's ruling "failed to make arty findings of law but simply said there was no evidence." Marrero's lawyer, Gary attorney Fred Work, said he was "disappointed" by the appeals court decision and said although there is a possibility of an appeal to the Indiana Supreme Court, he doubted it could be done in time for the election. BY JOHN SCHEIBEL Deputy West Lake County Editor INDIANAPOLIS -A Schererville police officer will take part in a cross-country bicycle ride that serves as a reminder of officers killed in the line of duty and a fund-raiser for a memorial to fallen officers in Washington, D.C Schererville police CpL Joe Uzubell, along with about 30 other officers from Indiana, will depart for Washington today from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis as part of the Police Unity Tour.

"I had a vision to do a mul-tistate ride, and when I found out there was a ride like that I jumped right on it," Uzubell said. Riders from Indiana will spend 10 days on the road, traveling through Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia before reaching Washington on May 12. "It's a way to participate in the fallen police officer memorial, not only in Indiana, but across the nation," Uzubell said. Each rider was required to raise about $1,200, Sgt. Diane Peifer said.

In addition, the city will apply on Gordon's behalf for infrastructure grants and as-; sist the company in obtain- ing economic development incentive grants from the state. Metros said the deal i would have been dead in the water had the city not of-. fered such a lucrative financial package. i But he added that Crown Point will benefit many times over through what Gordpn has offered to bring to the city.

The deal on Gordon's part includes what Ban said is "major investments" in land, building, machinery, equipment and inventory. The company already has signed a letter of intent to purchase the property where the center would be built for an estimated $5 million. The building and improvements account for another $30 million. The machinery, equipment and various personal property are an additional $45 million investment. Metros and Ban, who with Councilman Bob Corbin, R4th was the agreement's chief negotiator during the past two years, said the investment in people, however, is what particularly drew the city to Gordon.

"Their company oozes with respect to their human resource," Ban said. Race Continued from Bl County Surveyor George VanTil, a Philpot supporter, said, "He's learned how to campaign. Bernadette "Bobbi" Costa, who is forgoing another term on the County Council to run for clerk, said she believes the voters will credit her on-the-job training over Philpot's educational credentials and his previous countywide electoral success.
