threatening him with assassina tion or at least with death if he took part in the affair According to the re ports three letters were sent thelastoue reaching the judge on Wednesday morning The contest was settled the previous Tuesday ollowing is the text of the letter forget that if you come to Ebensburg iu a passenger car you may return as express people here are not going to take any fooling If an attempt is made to throw out he Carroll ballot some one will drop The people are in a rage about this contest and mean business judge are safer at home 1 1 has been remarked on the streets that a Yankee was as safe at Gettysburg as you are in Ebensburg will be some one drop before it is over will never be judge Mark it The oil referred to re lates to the vote of East Carroll town ship It was in dispute the Barker peo ple expecting to show that many illegal votes had been cast there Afier he arrived at home Judge White said he was not in the least alarmed by the threats conveyed iu the letters inti mating that he rather preferred to travel by express than by the regular passen ger route any ly It is said that the letters were not all from one person and obvious attempts had been made to disguise the writing Not much has been found out of the writer and no detectives are on his trail and the only reason advanced as to why Judge White received the letters while the two other Judges were left in pence is that it might have been thought that he would be predisposed in favor of Barker on account of the ser vices here in the Blair White contest This is a possible explanation Meanwhile the Cambria contest is over Barker having over estimated the illegal vote alleged to have assisted Judge O'Conner to his proud position Shot a Haniiau Miller of Pineton
