Hcatlered along the Atlantic coast are bird cities, great capitals of Rird-land. where the sea birds congregate In countless numbers. On Oardlner's Island, at the end of Tving Ifilnnd. Is the' fish hawk city, where, under the protection the family owning the Island the ospreys have learned to nest upon the ground, Instead of upon the highest trees, as On the mainland. Pelican Island, In the Indian river, Klortda, Is the metropolis of the pelican folk.

Far down on a remote Islet of the West Indies, containing but four while Inhabitants, the wary flamingo tribe has hidden Its capital. On Cobb's Island, off the Virginia const. Is the term metropolis, where the blrda of that family "most do rongre-Bate. These birds were so fiercely sought for millinery purposes for some years that several species were exterminated, but they are again multiply ing on Cobb's iRland, where their nests and downy little sand colored chicks cover the beaches. At the mouth of the fit.

Lawrence Is lllrd rock, the greatest bird tenement house In the world. In the clefts of Its precipitous sides nest thousands upon thousands of enormous, snowy gantlets, sedate, grenadlorlike puffins and elfin crowning stormy petrels, "Mother Carey'a chickens." The rock Is absolutely beachless, and the visitor Is drawn In a crate to the top by the lighthouse keeper, who dwell thereon; the birds surveying the whirling; ascent with motionless calm. All these bird cities and others lo the Everglndes of Florida, and along the Maine coast, are protected by the American Ornithological union. The union secured laws nnd paid wardens to protect the birds In their cities at the breeding season, confident that during the rest of the year the feathered folk will preserve themselves frort extinction. Though the gun Is forbidden, ono may hunt them with a camera, a far more skilled and difficult sport.

Stocks came up on the market freely at the opening today and there were wide declines nil the list. The coal ers and stocks which Imve been advanced recently showed the most eakness. They can, nnd they do, make their own choice among the nien ho are attract-? ed by them. And girls of the well to do class have probably more fre-t quent opportunities of studying male acquaintances than any of ihelr. predecessors throughout the of the world. In the time of Leech, write Mrs. Humphrey In the London Dally Chronicle, the ballroom was almost the only place In which yotinu men and women could Improve their knowledge of each other.

There followed. In coses of captivated fancy, the formal call, a terrible experience for the would-be suitor, with nil the family sitting; around, the other sisters all eyes and ears. The picnic of those dnys occa sionally proved useful to tw'o persons who liked to enjoy each other's solitude. And hen croquet came Into fash-Ion It afforded a reason for gatherings, I'sually the lovers played so Indifferently and became such a nuisance to the other players that they weie dismissed from the game, and had no difficulty In finding. themselves tete-a-tete.

This poverty of opportunity was often eked out by walks that were "not exactly" prearranged, and It was per mitted to a young man, even If he had not yet declared himself, Jo wait at the church door after morning serv ice on Sunday morning; and carry home hi lady's prayer book. How different Is all Is now! The careful chaperon finds her occupation gone. The bicycle gave her the first Intimation that she was becoming out of date, and the freedom that girlg enjoy nowadays has Indorsed her conge. This freedom Is all on the side of wisdom. The girl of today mny boat, golf, play tennis nnd croquet, ride, drive, walk, dance and talk aa much ns she pleases with the young men who have be'en Introduced to her.

And It Is well that It should be so. How can a choice be made without opportunities for The more male acquaintances a girl has the wider Is her flelil of choice. The old fashioned, secluded life In which daughters were kept robbed them of self reliance, of confidence In their own Judfrment. They knew but few rhen Intimately, and the results were not always happy. How could a man gain any real knowledge of a young woman's real character nnd disposition when he scarcely ever saw her exc.pt In the bosom of her family? There may be something; of the free nnd easy In the modern Intercourse between young people.

It Is a natural reaction on the part of the young woman, after centuries of restriction and chaperonnge, And so It-comes that a girl Is sometimes heard actually thanking a man for asking her to dance. Her proper attitude should be that of granting a favor. The man, too often, becomf Infected by her view of the case, and Is rather cavalier In hi own manner. But these are trifling things ami will amend themselves. The great thing Is that a girl can now look about her and choose for herself.

The man of her selection may possibly not respond, but at least she has had a chance of finding out hat she does not like. A little word, a look, Is sometimes enough to enlighten her as to the character that lies' behind the social mask, and to warn her against what what would be a fatal mistake. And In the same way she sees men In circumstances that elicit their chivalry, and prove their unselfishness. The drawing room girl of Leech's days had hardly ever such opportunities as these. She did not spend a long hour with her companlona waiting for admission to a lock on the Thames, and thereby apply a' geuge to the capacity and patience of her male escort.

She seldom visited the hunting field and shared the wild exhilaration of the gallop which brings the real man to the surface. Vnknnwn to her wae not only the bicycle, but the motor, with its Infinite variety of baffling breakdown. Its temper trying moods. "I should never like scolding any one else so well, and that Is a point to be thought of In a husband." says Mary Garth. In "Middle march." She was right.

To marry a man one dare not find fault with would be to Invite an uncomfortable fate. The perfect man. If such existed, would be an incompatible companion for a necessarily Imperfect woman. Does Zang-will go too far when he says: "The love of a good man Is an Intolerable bore?" He surely means the "unro guld." and to them a girl is seldom attracted. More to her liking Is a cheery, op.

tlmlstic man. whose sunny good humor is rather suggested than obtruded and does not display ltelf In constant eackling laughter, a too frequent failing. The morose and morbid man occasionally attracts a bright girl, from pure force of contrast, but let her beware lest her final choice should fall upon him. The davs are lead colored ip a home where the "master" suffers 'rom a lack of suavity, and horbidity I Irreconriliable with good health Lots of us flatter ourselves that can't be flattered.
