The young White Sox played nine innings of bone-aching baseball, helplessly watching Baltimore take three out of four games with an 84 victory. While the scorching-hot Orioles, winners of 10 of 11, try to salvage their season after a downright crappy spring, the White Sox will continue to develop their inexperienced club. "They're just really hot with the bats right now," Sox manager Jerry Manuel said, "and it's tough when players of that caliber get hot. Today we really just got beat up." Against veterans making multimil-lipns, the spendthrift Sox really looked out of touch. Falling back to the .500 level seemed appropriate on a day when the Sox (33-33) made baserun-ning and defensive mistakes and lOoked as intimidating as a fungo bat.

The O's (31-37), on the other hand, continued to pound the baseball out of the park. They scored 19 runs the past two days on Chicago pitching. "We've got a ways to go yet," Baltimore manager Ray Miller said. "But we're swinging the bats well. This was an important series for us." B.J.

Surhoff extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a first-inning two-run homer off James Baldwin (3-7). Surhoff 16th of the season was followed by Brady Anderson's 12th in the fourth and Albert Belle's 13th in the seventh. The Sox got an unexpected two-run homer from Brook Fordyce (career-high four hits), but again failed to Baltimore 8, White Sox 4 Turning point Harold Baines' tworun single over a drawrvin infield gave the O's a SI lead in the third. Next up: Minnesota (laTroy Hawkins 3-7) at White Sox (Jim Parque 7-5), 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.

TVRadio: Fox Sports Chicago (cable)WMVPAM (1000). match the Orioles in run-producing power. They fell to 16-19 at home in front of 22,755. "We had some close ballgames," Fordyce said. "We've been battling, but tonight they put pressure on us.

"It's tough, but we have to make the adjustments and make sure it doesn't happen again. As a young team, that's what you have to do." Baldwin had his worst start of the season, allowing seven earned runs in five innings. Ironically, he and Manuel said he had his best stuff in a while. The Orioles were able to take a 5-1 lead in the third after Baldwin walked two batters. With the infield drawn in, Harold Baines laced a two-run single.

"I thought I had good stuff, but I just got beat today," Baldwin said. "Baltimore is hot and they just tore my ass up." Jason Johnson (1-1) picked up his first win since last May and Mike Timlin worked the ninth to record his eighth save. Sox lefty Scott Eyre, recalled from Class AAA Charlotte on Sunday when Dave Lundquist was sent down, got two innings of work in and allowed Belle's homer. "They've got a number of guys who, if one gets hot, are capable of carrying a team. They've got three or four or five guys like that right now," Manuel said.

"It really doesn't matter who you throw out there on the mound." Mexico, 10:30 p.m. By The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO Rick Aguilera was on the brink of rescuing the floundering Cubs and giving himself a boost. Armando Rios and Wilson Delgado denied both. Rios hit a sacrifice fly on an 0-2 count for the tying score and Delgado singled on a 1-2 pitch to drive in the winner Sunday as the San Francisco Giants rallied in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory over the Cubs. -The win completed the Giants' first four-game sweep of the Cubs since June 20-23, 1991.

"When you do the little things right, you're going to be in position to win a game and I think that was the case today," said J.T. Snow, who began the Giants' rally with a leadof walk. "To sweep a team four games is hard to do and Chicago is a good team," added Snow, whose Giants lost to the Cubs in a one-game playoff for the wild-card last year. "I think this is one of the games we can look back later on the year, if we're in the hunt, and say, "Remember-that game against the Cubs on Father's It was a big win for us, one of the biggest of the San Francisco trailed 6-5 entering the bottom of the ninth. Snow worked the count to 3-2 before drawing a walk from Aguilera (3-3).

Stan Javier reached on a fielder's choice when catcher Sandy Martinez fielded his bunt and tried to get the lead runner at second base. Second San Francisco 7, Cubs 6 Turning point J.T. Snow's leadoff walk in the ninth against Cubs reliever Rick Aguilera. Next up: Cubs at Colorado, 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, Coors Field.

TVRadio: WGN (Ch. 9)WGN-AM (720). base umpire Bill Hohn ruled pinch-runner Shawn Estes safe on a close play. Pinch-hitter F.P. Santangelo sacrificed, and Brent Mayne was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Rios, who entered in the sixth, followed with a fly to right that scored Estes with the tying run. It was the Cubs' 10th loss in 11 games. "It's really disappointing. I feel like Fm letting my teammates down," said Aguilera, who has blown three of four save chances since being acquired a month ago in a trade with Minnesota. 'Tm not doing what they brought me over to do." Aguilera said it hurt not getting the call on the close play at second.

"I thought we got him," Aguilera said. "And that could change the whole inning, but the bottom line is (the umpire) felt he was safe so you've got to deal with it. Tve been though tough times before but this is extremely tough." Alan Embree (3-0) pitched 1 23 innings of one-hit relief for the victory. Tyler Houston homered and drove in two runs, Mickey Morandini had a two-run single and Curtis Goodwin and Henry Rodriguez each had RBI doubles. But the Cubs couldn't overcome three errors leading to three unearned runs.

"I don't know if well ever be able to put this behind us for the rest of our lives," Jay McKee of the Sabres said.

"This is what we all dreamed to do and the situation to be in and, now, it's gone." The debate isn't. NHL officials supervisor Bryan Lewis said Hull's goal cpunted because he maintained possession of the puck from the time he played it beyond the crease. "A puck that rebounds off the goalie, the goal post, an opposing player is not deemed to be a change of possession," Lewis said. "Therefore, Hull would be deemed to be in control of the puck, allowed to shoot and score a goal, even though the one foot would be in the crease in advance of the puck."
