40 THE TIMES Sunday, September 2, 1979 i Rebels To Defend Invitational Volleyball Crown Olen also expects her Rebels to be in the running for the title once again. After playing a large number of underclassmen last year, Olen has some experienced players ready to take the floor. "The kids seem very determined," Olen said. "They feel like they've got as good a chance as anybody. We'll be competitive, not only in the tournament but also on the season." First round matchups Tuesday Wednesday followed at 6 and 7:30 by loser's bracket games.

I I SB 1979-80 WINTER LEAGUES NOW BEING FORMED LadlM-CoffoKlotch LadltS'Aftornoon By RON BROW Times Sports Writer LANSING Volleyball season has arrived! The third annual TF South Invitational is proof ot that as eight teams begin play in the double-elimination affair beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday. Three games are on tap Tuesday through Saturday. Joining the defending champion Rebels in the battle for the title will be pre-meet favorite Oak Forest, Mun-ster, Chicago Morgan Park, Thornwood, Rich East, Highland and Thornridge. "I think this is the strongest field we've ever had in the tournament," TF South Coach Judy Olen said. "All of the teams should be pretty competitive." Highland is the only addition to the tournament this year.

But what an addition the Trojans make, especially after qualifying for the Indiana state tournament a year ago. While the team championship is the major goal of each of the eight teams, ft the invitational is also used as a measuring stick for the season. "The tournament gives the coaches a chance before the conference season to see how they look and do some experimenting on the floor," Olen said. "I'm hoping It will be a good tournament with the double elimination making It a little more challenging. I'm hoping it'll make It a better tournament and It'll give the better team a better chance to win." -Oak Forest rates the favorite's role after advancing to the super-sectional in Illinois state meet competition last year.

All of the members of the Bengals' club are back, including four girls that measure close to six feet. "I'd have to say Oak Forest is the team to beat," Olen said. "They have four big girls. Height is hard to beat if they're hard-skilled girls and they are all hard-skilled girls. "1 really don't know what some of the other schools coming in have.

Morgan Park is always competitive. I really look for the tournament to be competitive." 2 GREEN FEES o)i 6 CAR ForOnly ANY WEEK DAY WITH THIS AD I NO WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS PALMIRA Golf Course! "I feel great seeing these kids," says Billle Jean King, when asked about the talented teen-agers who are changing the face of women's tennis and making their presence felt at the U.S.

Open. King, however, also is making her presence felt. She charged into the fourth round Saturday with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Caroline Stoll. "We paid a very big price, and seeing these results is very rewarding," said King. "In the early '70s, a lot of people didn't believe in us, but I knew it would happen.

And we're just starting now. Women athletes have just started to reach their potential. Just imagine what it's going to be like 20 years from now!" King speaks from experience. It's been 20 years since she first played in the U.S. national championships, and women's sports in general and tennis in particular has undergone a complete metamorphosis since then.

"It's incredible what has happened, just incredible," she said. "Remember, I didn't have the vehicle, the opportunity, until I was 27 and the Virginia Slims tour started." Now 35, King is not about to fade away. After missing a year of singles play because of an ankle injury, she is working herself back into shape with a regular program of muscle strengthening and stretching exercises. "I've been through four operations now, and I go through the same thing every time agony," she said. "Rehabilitation takes more spirit than even winning a Wimbledon title.

I take great pride in working hard and coming back. I'm willing to pay the price. "A lot of these youngsters come up to me and ask, 'Why do you keep playing? You've done she added. "I tell them, 'Because I love to If you want to rest on your laurels, then go home and look through a scrapbook. That's not for me.

"I don't live for the past. 1 live for now, and for tomorrow." And what will tomorrow bring, if Billie Jean has her wish? "I'd like to win Wimbledon or the U.S. Open again. In fact, I'd like to win both," she said. "And I think I can.

I'll have to pay a very dear price, but I'm willing to do it. That's what matters motivation." i jlT? (AP) Drivers I ee Petty, Parnelli Jones and David Pearson have been named to the auto racing Hall of Fame, the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association announced Saturday. Others being honored at the Hall of Fame located at Ontario Motor Speedway are the winner of America's first organized auto race, Frank Duryea, and racing engine designer Leo Goossen. Duryea, driving a motor wagon bearing his name, won a race from Chicago to Evanston and back to Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1895, averaging 5.2 miles per hour for 54.36 miles. Six cars started and just two finished the race through snow drifts over virtually non-existent roads.

A new Hall of Fame member who made major contributions to racing's rich past as well as its present is Goossen, who designed many innovative and highly successful racing engines over a 50-year period. Goossen's creations inclded the Miller eight, Miller 91 and the 220 and255 four-cylinder Offy. He co-designed the supercharged Novi V-8 and served as a special consultant on the Ford racing engines of the 1960s. Petty, the first stock car racer to win the NASCAR Grand National title three times (1954-1958-1959) scored 54 Grand National Race victories. That total is exceeded only by his son Richard, named to the Hall of Fame six years ago, and Pearson.

Jones, winner of the 1963 Indianapolis 500 whose has been a winning driver in many varieties of auto racing, was the first to surpass 150 mph at Indy. when he won the pole in 1962. He also drove the Andy Granatelli turbine car that came within six laps of victory in 1967 before an inexpensive part broke. Legaet extra Capacitor-start, 3450 rpm. 1-HP motor develops 2 HP.

John Topits claims Borbon, traded to San Francisco in June, bit him on the chest as Topits attempted to break up a fight. Topits said in the suit, filed Friday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, that the injury cost him $150 in medical bills and a permanent scar on his chest.
