BLITZ www.qctlmes.comsports NO. 23 OKLAHOMA 34, IOWA STATE 9 Win bittersweet for Sooners BIG 12 Report i if Ft THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson dives into the end zone to score a touchdown on a 53-yard run In the fourth quarter against Iowa State Saturday in Norman, Okla. Peterson broke his collarbone on the play. RB Peterson lost for season with broken collarbone By Jim Sullivan LEE NEWS NETWORK NORMAN, Okla. Three flags flew over the southeast corner of Memorial Stadium Saturday By the end of the day, the Red Cross banner would have been a perfect addition.

The Sooners claimed the only piece of genuine good news here, whipping Iowa State by a 34-9 margin. Both sides, though, took heavy causalities, most notably OU star running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson, a junior and a likely candidate for the Heis-man Trophy, broke his collarbone. It happened when he tumbled into the end zone -knocked off-stride by ISU cornerback Chris Singleton at the end of a 53-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 35 seconds to play in the game. His 2006 regular season ended with 26 carries, 183 yards and two scores against the Cyclones.

If Peterson returns, it may not be until the Sooners play in a bowl game. "That's the nature of our business," said Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. "It's an unfortunate deaL" DeAndre Jackson may not own the star power of an Adrian Peterson, but his loss is very serious for an Iowa State defense that's already been shredded through the air. The Cyclones' senior corner-back suffered a possible torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while returning a kickoff in the second quarter. A wicked high-low hit by OU's Lendy Holmes and Allen Patrick knocked Jackson out of action and probably ended his college career.

"We lost one of the great young men and one of the great players in the history of Iowa State football," said Cyclone head coach Dan McCarney. "We'll miss his leadership and play." McCarney said the Cyclones suffered no other serious THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Texas quarterback Stephen McGee leaps into the end zone for a two-point conversion Saturday in College Station, Texas. Stephen McGee was 19-for-23 for 183 yards and a touchdown for the Aggies, who beat a ranked opponent at home for the first time in six tries under coach Dennis Franchione. The Aggies (6-1, 2-1 Big 12) also snapped a three-game losing streak to Big 12 opponents at Kyle Field. For the fourth consecutive game, the Cyclone defense allowed a touchdown on its opening series. Peterson's brilliant 40-yard run set up his own 6-yard TD sweep at the 10:38 mark of the first quarter. Once again, the Cyclones couldn't find an answer to an opponent's passing game. Quarterback Paul Thompson hit 14 of his 17 throws in the first 30 minutes, among them a 9-yard TD strike to Malcolm Kelly with 5:08 to go in the first quarter, giving OU a quick 14-0 lead.

"It's really frustrating," said ISU defensive end Shawn Moorehead. "The last couple of games, we've started out slow, and the other team's offense has come out and really moved the ball against us. Then we settled down and started playing better. But we can't come out against a good team, give them 14 points and expect to win." McCoy's sixth scoring pass, a 50-yard strike to Limas Sweed in the fourth quarter, broke the school record of five held by James Brown (1994) and Chris Simms (2001).

McCoy finished with a career-high 275 yards. Sweed and Billy Pittman each caught two touchdowns. What started as a tough game turned into a rout by the end as the Longhorns (6-1 3-0), shut out in the first quarter, scored two defensive touchdowns and passed the 60-point mark against Baylor for the second year in a row. Shawn Bell passed for 303 yards and two touchdowns and even caught one on a trick play in the third quarter for Baylor No. 21 Nebraska 21, Kansas State 3 MANHATTAN, Kan.

Nebraska gambled and won on a pair of tricky fourth-down calls, beating Kansas State 21-3 and snapping the 21st-ranked Cornhuskers' four-game losing streak in Manhattan. The Huskers (6-1 3-0 Big 12) earned the program's 800th victory and took over sole possession of the Big 12 North lead after No. 19 Missouri lost 25-19 at Texas Kansas State (4-3, 1-2) had not lost at home to Nebraska since a 39-3 defeat on Oct. 5, 1996. Nebraska's first touchdown, a 17-yard pass play less than four minutes into the game, came on a fake field goal.

Holder Jake Wesch, a backup kicker who played quarterback in high school, rolled right and found reserve tight end Hunter Teafatiller all alone just outside the end zone for a 7-0 lead. And on the Cornhuskers' first drive of the second quarter, Zac Taylor's 24-yard bootleg on fourth-and-2 from Kansas State's 27 set up a 3-yard TD pass to Josh Mueller also a backup tight end for a 14-0 lead. Marlon Lucky's 40-yard TD burst up the middle made it 21-0 shortly before the midpoint of the third quarter. That score, capping a two-play, 72-yard drive, came after wide receiver Maurice Purify appeared to fumble the ball away after a 32-yard catch from Taylor. But on review, officials said Purity's left knee was down before the ball came out.

Colorado 30, Texas Tech 6 BOULDER, Colo. Colorado snapped a 10-game losing streak and Dan Hawkins earned his long-awaited first win with the Buffaloes, a 30-6 victory over Texas Tech. The win allowed Colorado to end one of the longest losing streak's in the program's 1 17-year history. Mason Crosby had three field goals, including 56- and 53-yarders. Crosby has 12 field goals from 50 yards in his career and it's the third time he's kicked two of that distance in the same game.

Hugh Charles finished with 1 1 9 yards on 17 carries. It's the most yards against Texas Tech's defense this season. Bernard Jackson rushed for 54 yards including a 1-yard sneak for a score with 3:27 left and threw for another 151 yards and two touchdown passes. Charles had a 74-yard touchdown run negated in the third quarter when officials ruled he stepped out at the 39. The Buffs settled for Crosby 53-yard field goal with 4:06 remaining in the period to give Colorado a 23-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The last time Texas Tech was shut out through three quarters was Sept. 29, 1999, against Texas. The Red Raiders ran only three offensive plays in Colorado's territory through three quarters. Oklahoma State 42, Kansas 32 LAWRENCE, Kan. Bobby Reid threw five touchdown passes, ran for another score and set a school record with 457 all-purpose yards in leading Oklahoma State to a 42-32 victory over Kansas.

Reid threw for 41 1 yards and rushed for 46 more, surpassing his coach Mike Gundy's record of 434 yards set in 1 989 against the Jayhawks. Adarius Bowman was Reid's favorite target with 1 3 catches for a school-record 300 yards and four touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback was 23-of-35 and accounted for all six Cowboy touchdowns as Oklahoma State rolled up 603 yards against a defense that was ranked 1 1 0th nationally against the pass. Reid's total through the air was only 18 yards shy of Gundy's school record of 429. The Cowboys (4-2, 1-1 Big 12), who had been averaging better than 37 points per game, trailed 17-0 midway through the third quarter when Reid led the comeback.

The Associated Press YOUNGSTOWN STATE 35, WESTERN ILLINOIS 28 injuries. Wide receiver Austin Flynn, though, did not play late in the game and left the field with an ice pack taped to an ankle. Regulars such as Singleton, Alvin Bowen, Scott Fisher and Caleb Berg also missed some time with various ailments. After Old Glory, the state flag of Oklahoma and the school's pennant came down, Iowa State limped out of Norman. A rugged stretch against a quin- tet of ranked teams left the Cyclones with a 3-4 overall record.

For the fourth straight time, they've started the Big 12 season at 0-3. And QU continued its utter dominance of the Cyclones. The Sooners stretched their winning streak over Iowa State to 10 straight games. Overall, OU's edge is now 66-5-2. For McCarney's team, it's a familiar problem.

(AP) Marcus Mason ran for 266 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead Youngstown State to a 35-28 win over Western Illinois. Mason broke loose for touchdown runs of 75 and 95 yards in the second half, swinging the momentum of a game that was tied 14-14 at halftime. Junior tailback Monquantae Gibson lllini Daniel started 7-0 in 1960, was allowing only 73 yards rushing per game, but the Aggies ran for 180 and dominated time of possession, 41:30 to 18:30. Freshman Michael Goodson ran for 65 yards and TD for The Tigers fumbled four times in the opening half and the first one robbed them of a sure touchdown. On the game's third play, Daniel found Will Franklin wide open behind the defense, but as Franklin trotted toward the end zone, freshman cornerback Jordan Peterson sneaked up and punched the ball loose.

It bounced out of the end zone and after a replay review, officials gave the ball to the Aggies on a touchback. Chad Schroeder, leading receiver and a former high school quarterback, threw a 40-yard pass to Kerry Franks to give the Aggies a first-and-goal. The Aggies settled for Layne Neumann's 23-yard field goal, putting the Tigers behind for the first time this season. Missouri's Jared Perry caught a deflected pass for a 26-yard gain to set up Tony Temple's 5-yard TD run with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Lane's 1-yard touchdown gave Texas a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter.

The Tigers led 14-10 when Temple fumbled with 7:19 left in the half. McGee threw a short TD pass to fullback Chris Alexander three minutes later to put the Aggies back in front. Aided by two personal fouls on defensive tackle Kellen Heard, the Tigers drove for Jeff Wolfert's tying 39-yard field goal just before halftime. got the ball to start the second half, but McGee fumbled a snap and fell on it in the end zone for a Missouri safety that made it 19-17. McGee went 8-for-8 on next drive and Goodson scored on a 2-yard run.

McGee dived for the 2-point conversion and the Aggies led 25-19. Missouri drove to the 4 in the fourth quarter, but the Aggies tackled holder Brad Ekw-ereku on a fake field-goal try and took over. Williams, who had moved Illinois 88 yards in two plays to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, brought the offense onto the field, and Zook said he was confident his offense could do the job.

"I told him to get me down to the (Ohio) 25," Zook said, knowing that would set up a potential game-winning field goal by Jason Reda. And on first down Williams ran the ball 12 yards to the 18. Then on second down, Williams zinged a short pass to Hudson, who was immediately stopped by cornerback T.J. Wright. Wright grabbed Hudson and began pushing him backward.

But just as Zook and some of his players thought they heard a whistle blow, the ball popped free and Ohio linebacker Russ Tyler pounced on it, giving the Bobcats the ball at the lllini 16-yard line with 1:03 to play Hudson's fumble was somewhat controversial, in that those watching on the field felt his forward progress had been stopped before the ball popped free. Zook thought about calling a timeout to give the replay officials time for a review.
