Sports QUAD-CITY TIMES Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1 982 23 ett ONI victory CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) Darrell Mudra, whose talents for healing foot ball programs have brought him the nickname "Dr. Victory," signed a four-year contract Tuesday to become the coach at the University of Northern Iowa. Mudra has earned a reputation of turning losing teams into winners during a 24-year staving on as athletic director. Mudra said at a news conference he faces a different challenge at Northern Iowa because Sheriff has established a solid program.

Sheriff is the winningest coach in school history, compiling a 124-101-4 record, including a 4-6-1 mark this year. "I'm a bit apprehensive about it," Mudra said. "Stan has done a great job of coaching and leaves some big shoes to filL But I'm thrilled to be here. I feel Northern Iowa is in the best shape of any program that I've gone into." Mudra's career record in college coaching is 157-65-3 and at every stop but one, he has taken over a losing team and produced a winner. Two of his teams have been national champions.

The 157 victories put-Mudra third on the NCAA Division I-AA list, behind Eddie Robinson of Grambling and John Merritt of Tennessee State. "We're very fortunate to be able to announce the appointment of Darrell Mudra as head football coach," Sheriff said. "He has a high stature in the coaching field and his record speaks for itself. In fact, he is known as Dr. Victory.

I personally am extremely excited about the future of UNI football" Other top candidates for the UNI job had included Al Molde, head coach at Central Missouri; Jim Williams, the No. 1 assistant at Iowa State; and two UNI assistants, Dennis Remmert and John Gregory. Northern Iowa and Easterrn Illinois have shared the Mid-Continent Conference championship in football the past two years. The two teams tied 10-10 this season and UNI beat Mudra's team 38-17 in 1981. Many UNI followers were surprised when it was reported last week that Mudra was being interviewed.

He has been mentioned as a candidate for head coaching jobs at some major schools, including Tulane and Army. "I felt I would have a tough time getting one of those other jobs, not because I didn't consider myself to be a legitimate candidate, but because of the difficult time I had at Florida State," Mudra said. "I consider Northern Iowa to be a better opportunity for me right now. There are advantages and disadvantages to going big time." Florida State was the only school where Mudra failed to produce a winning team. The Seminoles were 1-10 and 3-8 in his two seasons, 1974-75, but with players he recruited they went 5-6, 10-2 and 8-3 the next three years.

Mudra usually coaches from the press box during games. Asked whether he would continue to do that at Northern Iowa, which plays its home games indoors at the UNI-Dome, he joked: "There probably won't be as much need to operate out of the press box here because the weather is much nicer on the sidelines." coaching career that has taken him to six other universities and one professional team. He has spent the last five seasons Darrell Mudra at eastern Illinois, a conference rival of Northern Iowa. At UNI, Mudra will replace Stan Sheriff, who resigned last month after 23 years as head coach but is Two misses: Muscatine stuns Knights Fritsch quits NEW ORLEANS (AP) Placekicker Toni Fritsch retired from the New Orleans Saints Tuesday because MUSCATINE, Iowa Muscatine upset Davenport MiSS-8 CjiflS Assumption, 72-64, Tuesday he was missing field goals he could have made with his eyes shut back in his glory days. "I was very unhappy about my performance the last couple of games. At my age I don't want to be very unhappy," Fritsch said. Fritch is 38. He intends to head back to Vienna, to see his four brothers and try to get back into his first love, soccer, as a coach. He has been out of soccer for a long time but he said that won't matter.

"You never lose the touch, sir," he said. Before Tom Landry hired him to kick for the Dallas Cowboys 12 years ago, Fritsch was a star right wing on the Austrian Nationals. "I had never seen a football before," he said. "But I was a most accurate kicker. When I first came I was the little Kraut from After.

I kicked they called me Toni Fritsch." In soccer, he played in two World Cup games, events that shake most of the international sporting world! In National Football League action he played in two Super Bowls. "So you can see I had it all," he said. "For every young player, I hope at the end they can look back on the same thing, because the Super Bowl is every American kid's dream." Fritsch kicked twice in the Saints' game with the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday. One was blocked. He missed the other one from 40 yards out and trotted off with head hanging low.

SAN DIEGO (AP) Bill Walton got the go-ahead from his doctors Tuesday to begin playing twice a week for the San Diego Clippers and possibly go fulltime in mid-Janaury, team officials said.

Fouts completed 25 of 40 passes for 435 yards, making him the first NFL quarterback to surpass the 400-yard mark in two consecutive games. Ten of his passes were caught by ailing wide receiver Wes Chandler, who broke a club record by Hall of Famer Lance Alworth with 260 yards in receptions.

The 84 points, most ever in a Monday night game, bettered the previous mark of 79 when Oakland defeated Pittsburgh 45-34 in 1980. The 66 completions by both teams bettered by one the record San Diego and San Francisco set 10 days ago in a 41-37 shootout won by the Chargers. Cincinnati quarterback Ken Anderson attempted a team-record 56 passes, completing 40 for 416 yards and two touchdowns. He had 27 completions in 35 attempts by halftime. SAN DIEGO (AP) Quarterback Dan Fouts, the force behind San Diego's explosive offense, had a philosophical explanation for the Chargers' wild 50-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

"It was like that old sword story: you live by it or die by it," Fouts said after the highest-scoring game in the 12-year history of Monday night football. "They blitzed real effectively to begin the game, but then we hurt them real badly twice in a row," said Fouts, who riddled the Bengals' secondary during San Diego's 33-point second half. When the aerial bombardment ended, three NFL records, including 883 passing yards by two teams, were broken and seven San Diego team marks fell. The two of fenses produced 1,002 total yards.
