Sports QUAD-CITY TIMES Sunday. Nov. 14, 1982 Rocks cough up The word by Roger early fumbles By Craig Cooper of the Times Continued from Page IB reach the end zone. Lisbon, a 5-9, 174-pounder who had rushed for more than 1,100 yards coming into the game, had 130 in 23 carries Saturday. While he had no trouble navigating on the slick field, Rocky's wishbone attack was having its problems.

The Rocks fumbled the Bees fall to Loras AMES, Iowa Roger Craig is a level-headed sort not prone to exaggeration. So when he calls the Nebraska team he is playing with this season the best he has seen, you tend to believe him. He will get no argument here. The Cornhusker team which laid the plastic on Iowa State 48-10 Saturday earned quite a few more admirers. "This is the best offensive team I have played on at Nebraska and yes, it's the best balanced team I've played on," said Craig, the former Davenport Central star whose career is winding down with the Huskers.

"We've got more depth at running back than we've had since I've been here and the offensive line is doing a great job. "Defensively, we may have been a bit better in the past but nobody has been able to do much against us." CRAIG WILL get complete agreement from his old pal Jamie Williams, the Husker tight end also out of Central. "I think that offensively, we're good enough that we can score a lot of points against Oklahoma. I think we can do to them what we have done to everybody else," Williams said. At this point in the season, the talk in Lincoln is always of Oklahoma and the annual donnybrook which decides the Big Eight championship and the Orange Bowl berth.

This year the big one comes Nov. 26. "The heck with the rivalry," said Williams. 'If we play the same way against them as we have everybody else, the rivalry won't be important" THE 9-1 HUSKERS are a confident team. They have every reason to be.

"If we play the way we are capable of playing, I think we'll be in the Orange Bowl," said Craig, who is back at I-back after a stint at fullback. Craig has been plagued by injuries this season. They have been nagging injuries which have slowed him but hardly stopped him. By Jan. I in Miami, he should be ready.

"At the end of the game we only have three guys who were able to play without a lot of pain and I was questionable," said Craig. "Right now we need the break before the Oklahoma game to get welL" The switch back to I-back makes little difference to Craig, who is comfortable at either spot "The coaches decided that they were probably going to need me more at I-back with the big games coming up," Craig said. "It makes a big difference when you can have fresh running backs going in." Williams' is primarily a blocker with the Huskers' explosive running game. He has caught 19 passes, including three for touchdowns this season, but it is easy to get lost in the shuffle. "You don't mind not catching a bunch of passes if Loras swept through the St Ambrose Centennial basketball tournament undefeated, capped by an 87-81 victory over St Ambrose Saturday night Loras was led by Jeff Valentine, who poured in 28 points.

The Bees tied the score, 41-41, at half, but a 16-8 spurt after intermission gave Loras the edge it needed. Dave Smykowski and Tom Sokolik led St Ambrose, 2-2, with 13 points each. Reggie Eiland scored 24 points, ten points in the last two minutes of the game, to lead Marycrest to a 83-76 victory over Lagan in the first game at Assumption HighSchooL Darryl Smith led Mary-crest with 26 point in the Eagles' first win of the season. Logan's Dave Trost led all scorers with 27 points, followed by Mike Rengert with 25. The win moves the Eagles record to 1-2 on the 'ff hi aWrkmK I3mm ball five times and lost three of them.

Glenbard had one lost fumble and had two passes intercepted. Three of those turnovers occurred in the game's first four minutes. Rocky came up with pass interceptions by Troy Mallett and Scott Sheredan, but Thomas Adams lost the football after ripping off a 26-yard gain to Marycrest Eiland D. game for Pleasant Valley. However, in the overtime, Vinton hit some free throws to jump in front before the Spartans missed a layup that would have tied the game. Vinton hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to ice the win. Deena Fogarty led PV with 40 points in the game, with Kelly Wiedemeyer chipping in with 16. For Vinton, Paige Shepherd collected 30.

Fairfield was never headed in its easy triumph, jumping out to a 20-7 first quarter lead. Julie and Pam Litton had 24 and 21 points to key the winners while Lori Flei-schman had 15 points for West Des Moines Hoover broke open a tight game with a 23-point outburst in the second period while holding Betten-dorf to just 14 points. Jeanet-te Cleven and Jill Tallman had 64 points between them for Hoover while Ann Gren- go inside Glenbard's 30. Rocky's costliest fumble in the first half came just after the second period began. A Brooks pitch to Russell Baker went astray and Glenbard's Tony Savegnago recovered at the Rock Island 12.

Four plays later, Savegnago the lead blocker for Lisbon on most of his runs slammed over from less than a yard away. "WE ATTACK more north-south (handoffs up the middle and slant-in pass patterns by quarterback Jeff Laschinski) as opposed to Rock Island's east-west offense," Evans said. "Because of that, the field conditions helped us, I guess." DeSutter, because the Rocky attack sputtered for the most part in the opening half, switched quarterbacks at intermission. "I just felt we weren't getting into the rhythm of the game," DeSutter said. "We had a hell of a year and Brooks was a great player for us this seasoa "Allison has come in before in a situation like that and I thought he might be able to provide a spark.

He runs the ball better inside for us and that's what we needed because of the field conditions." Allison did provide a spark, moving the Rocks 47 yards in 13 plays against the stubborn Panther defense that has yielded more than one touchdown only twice this seasoa zebach and Shelly Smith had 26 and 18 for the Bulldogs. Expect him to go early in the draft But talks with the pros will have to be delayed for both Williams and Craig.

"Rozier got a lot of his yardage on his own," said Duncan. "We'd have the play figured out and people there, then he'd make a cut and he has the strength and power to get back inside and pull through tackles.

"They are as complete and as devastating an offensive team as I've seen in a longtime." With Rozier eventually on the sideline with a twisted ankle, Craig got his chance cause we didn't win," said Giffords. "I would trade every field goal for an Iowa State victory. "I'm sure that the kick will be a treasured moment The game won't be." Duncan's decision to use Giffords with his team down 35-7 in the fourth quarter drew scattered boos which turned into an ovation when the crowd found out the kick broke the record. "I wanted Alex to have a chance at the record so we kicked it," said Duncan. The loss was the third straight for the Cyclones, now 4-5-1 TWO KINDS OF Three Quad-City area girls basketball teams launched their seasons Saturday night in a clinic held at Pleasant Valley.

All three lost, but to teams that probably will be ranked among the top 20 in the Fairfield, third-place finishers last year at the state tournament, hammered Davenport West, 71-39. Des Moines Hoover belted Bet-tendorf, 82-64. And in the finale, Vinton nipped Pleasant Valley, 67-63, in overtime. Pleasant Valley trailed by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter before a Vinton stall failed to produce the desired results. The Spartans fouled and the strategy paid off as Vinton missed eight free throws down the stretch, including five one-and-ones.

Finally, a basket by Nanc-ie Baker with three seconds to go in regulation tied the 'When in his final game in Iowa. Fryar's impressive runback from the Nebraska 19 to the ISU 22 paved the way for Craig to go over the top from the two with :40 left in the third. BESIDES A three-yard tuochdown run by quarterback David Archer which tied the game at 7-7 in the first period, Iowa State come up with a 32-yard field goal by senior Alex Giffords into a stiff wind. The three-pointer was the 41st in the career of Giffords, a Big Eight record. "It doesn't mean that much to me right now be FREE! Continued from Page IB games," said Brown.

"I don't think the pass blocking thing was any big deal either. "I think I have been treated fairly, but three damn ballgames? I don't hold a grudge or anything like that I am disappointed, though." Brown said he had approached the coaches about his lack of playing time but had not pressed them on the subject. "It was not like I was going to say something about it every day," he added. THE TRANSFER who joined the ISU program with only one year of eligibility remaining also had some nice runs in the second half. Too few of them, though.

"Defensively, I thought that they (Nebraska) played well. The defense is not a flaw at all," Duncan said. They play good defense." The offensive fireworks in the second half by the Huskers included a long drive to make it 28-7 early in the third, a 59-yard punt return by Irving Fryar that set up a Roger Craig score and two late ones by the reserves.
