The prejudice against religious papers was very great at that time, as they were blamed much for bringing on the war, and when General Wilson, who, commanding Wilson's raiders, the first Yankees to come through this section, reached Tuskegee, The Baptist plant was ordered burned. Revs. Samuel Henderson and H. E. Taliaferro, who were the editors and owners, made strong appeal to the commanding General to save the plant and after much persuasion he agreed to do so, if they would not use it at any time in future for the publication of a religious paper.
